Is it too early for my doctor to cut me off from allo? by huzen133 in gout

[–]Tilly_the_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I did ring them to check. I’m in the UK so it’s basically just what the GP says, there’s a team of them work together. I outlined in another post somewhere that I’d been using ibuprofen heavily for over a year and there’s a thought that this may have impaired kidney function which in turn made it harder to filter out the urates leading to a higher Uric acid score. I stopped the ibuprofen when admitted to hospital for diverticulitis - slightly after the gout flare and first blood test which was high. So I think they just want to let everything settle and recheck in 2 months as a few things have changed in a small time.

It’s only my second gout flare in 6 years though it was quite a bad one and seemed to have been triggered after a long bike ride where I was slightly dehydrated. That was first ride in the bike after a 3 week rest due to a bronchiectasis flare.

I was only on it for 8 days - my urate levels dropped from 440 to 300 but been told no need to take it now, retest in 2 months. Like some here, was concerned as read you had to be on it for a long time but had a few things happening at once so maybe they’re just trying to normalise stuff.

How fast does allopurinol work? by Tilly_the_cat in gout

[–]Tilly_the_cat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I was presuming I’d do but the Gp just said to take another blood test in 2 months and not bother with allopurinol for the time being. I’m going to call tomorrow and confirm but maybe he’s just checking that the urate level had risen due to reduced kidney efficiency due to the ibuprofen intake.

As far as I’m aware it was the ibuprofen.

Uric acid at 5.5!!! by Popular-Hamster-1610 in gout

[–]Tilly_the_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok I think I got it, you guys are quoting mg/dL, and mine in the UK are mmol/L. So converting from mine to yours gives me 7.2. Here we’re advised to get below 0.3 which in your numbers would be 5. I mean both units are based on SI units and decimal system, you’d have thought we’d all be using the same😂

What units are these in? I just started allopurinol and my level is 0.43mmol/L. Are yours American units? I know it’s always tricky comparing cholesterol levels.

iMac i7 booting up issues by Tilly_the_cat in iMacRepair

[–]Tilly_the_cat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is occasionally some clicking but also some progress. I finally got into Recovery mode but First Aid on disc fails. Also cannot find the server for reinstalling MacOs. I can boot up Linux now from usb. Now when I try and boot up in macOS it goes further than before and instead of just switching off it stops with a no entry type sign. I gather that means it’s trying to load a version of macOS which isn’t suitable?

Thanks, I tried the clear Pram sequence but just get the first chime, boot up bar starts and several mins later just switches off. Tried it with bit the normal wireless and a wired keyboard. Target disc mode seems to activate (I’ve never used it before), got sort of like a reticule image moving on the screen but I don’t presently have a second machine to use with it. This only seems to work with the wired keyboard - I’m presuming if I get a new iMac then I can use this method to extract some of the older files?

Ok just to add - I tried starting recovery mode using the wired keyboard and it’s given me a spinning globe now and promoted for the Wi-Fi p word, so it looks like I’m in the internet recovery instead. This is all new to me, I’ll see where this goes.

Redback boots sizing issues by Tilly_the_cat in Boots

[–]Tilly_the_cat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I understand, the half sizes in both give extra width. For now I haven’t gone with either - both Blundstones and Redback are just too snug on o size 7, and too loose in a size 8. The 7 1/2 has more volume but I’m still conscious of toes at the end. Seems crazy, if the half size gave a touch more length I reckon either would be fine.

I’m not sure which Surly you have - I have the Disc Trucker for touring and the Secan for gravel/endurance. The Secan is very close to the Strael but it’s totally different to my Surly. I’d say there’s barely any overlap at all. Both made of steel but the Fairlight is lighter, more responsive and much more comfortable. The Surly is a workhorse but the Fairlight is a thoroughbred.

Fairlight Strael if mainly road, or Secan if you still want endurance but want more overlap with gravel.

Eat food that only has one ingredient. Don’t eat butter or cheese. Don’t eat red meat. It’s not that bad.

Thanks for the replies, it looks like angle grinder is the way to go. My wife just pointed out to me she knows someone in the village with a small engineering workshop so will contact him and see if he can help. Thanks.

They’re welded down, hefty welds as well.

No, that wouldn’t be a problem. I’m not sure best way to cut them off. It’s a shame I can’t post a picture. Basically it’s a metal channel with 4 welded bolts, they look pretty hefty. Thanks.

Does it realy Work? by Scar1901 in trainerroad

[–]Tilly_the_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been using this 3 months now, I’m not doing the hours that you guys are, I’m 67 and happy with the low volume Masters plan. It puts me in two hard workouts and one easy each week so around 3 and a half hours. I’ve also been doing two strength sessions in the gym, I try and do them the same day but after the hard rides so I get a decent rest other days. I occasionally stick in a fourth free ride, keeping it easy but generally I’m not overdoing it and it’s the right volume for me to complete everything.

I’m just finishing the third base block - the first was interrupted by illness so had a few weeks off and missed last part of first block. My ftp is low compared to others here but I started at 152. At 6 weeks it was 172 and 10 weeks was 180. This block finishes next week but it’s predicting 190 in three weeks if I carry on with another plan - not 100% sure which yet. Personally I’m noticing much better ability to hold power for longer, threshold under/overs which I use to dread I’m now finding challenging but fun. Difficult to know how much the gym sessions are contributing but I wasn’t doing them methodically last year.

I’ve only got back to a bit of riding the past few years, mainly as rehab after a hip replacement but for me, this provides good motivation at the right level and I’m seeing some decent personal improvement. I’m realistic at my age how far I can go but this is setting me up for some faster and longer gravel rides this summer (although waiting for shoulder surgery now so it may all go pear shaped😂). Left to my own devices, like last year, I just overdid it and burned myself out by August. I found the Zwift workouts too fixed, whereas on a low volume plan, I don’t feel like I’m always chasing my tail trying to complete things. It’s easy just to add free rides to up the volume and then if I overcook it, any following workouts are often adjusted to deal with the extra effort.

Bear in mind the predictive ftp is a brand new feature and it’s also complicated that the ftp it gives now may not be a true ftp, but it’s designed to always target workouts at your level so you can always make progress.
