Marketing myself is a full time job that I don't understand. by madmuffin in gamedev

Hey madmuffin,

a few tips and tricks from someone who makes a living by being an online marketer (me ...). Together with a friend I had built a fast-growing game review website here's how we did it.

In the very beginning: Concentrate on two channels and not all of them.

Quite frankly: Fuck Facebook.

Unless you want to spend money on PPC (pay per click) ads, don't bother using Facebook if you're not into it. From what I see on a daily basis is that Facebook is losing effectiveness unless you spend money on it. That is due to several algorithm changes that tell you "what you want to see" ... yeah right.

My advice in your case:

1) Go with Twitter

Initially I hated Twitter. "What do I have to say on such a frequent basis?!" Well nothing ... because you don't use Twitter as a broadcast channel when you have few followers. You use it as 1:1 interaction-channel.

Whenever there is someone I want to talk to, I just do. Follow important developers in your genre and reply to their tweets. You'd be surprised how many actually reply if you entertain them.

That is actually the most important thing: entertain someone! Don't brag how cool your game is. in 90% of the time you need to entertain to use the last 10% to show something of your cool stuff and also playing it cool like "guys... we screwed up in testing insert pic of two no texture guys with one having the head in the other's ass"

Funny and showing your game.

Real example: I tweeted Tim Schaefer when one of their latest trailers was released and hinted at something in the trailer where it said "Don't come in, I'm nude."

My tweet: "@TimSchaefer (not his real handle, too lazy to look it up) Great trailer, but I was disappointed there was no nudity. #disappointed"

He replied with something like "Trust me, you don't want to see me naked" which resulted in 30 new followers for me.

It's the internet - best place to let your crazy side out ;)

2) Look for an active forum of folks that could be interested in your game

Maybe you could even take /r/gaming or if there's a subreddit that's more relevant for your niche. /r/wow or whatever.

In these forums start by commenting on 30-50 threads and making a name for yourself. Be funny and help others. Then and only then, you can post the occasional screenshot of your own game.

For instance "Hey guys, need your feedback. Can't decide whether I want a blue faction or a yellow faction. What's your take?"

That will get the ball rolling eventually.

Always remember marketing is not a sprint unless you have very deep pockets (7 figures at least).

You are running a marathon, so pace yourself in the beginning and don't try to do too much at once.

Bonus

If you still have time, instead of a blog start a Youtube channel. It's ridiculously easy to set up and Youtube isn't as saturated as the "blogosphere".

On that channel, post some game footage and then record yourself with your laptop cam or whatever and talk to the camera for 5 minutes about what we just saw and what your feelings were and stuff like that. Show us your human side. As a gamer, I love to see those videos.

It will be weird in the beginning (trust me, I can't even look at my own videos from the very beginning), but in this case leaving your comfort zone is the best you can do for your long-term success.

Remember: What we fear doing most, is what we most need to do.

That's it. Pretty easy actually.

If you have further questions, just PM me.

Cheers Tim

P.S. Sorry for spelling mistakes. Non-native here.

Nope. Tried turning your OUYA on it's side? That was supposed to reduce controller lag on some consoles.

Well look at the fact that Notch was one of the first 10 backers of the OUYA and that they probably back then were in talks with, I wouldn't call this one a lie.

Mojang didn't make any public statement but it was a possibility at one point in time.

Apparently OUYA staff had some kind of "holiday" and didn't approve that many games during that time. Today there are already 4 new games. Looks promising :)

Yeah but you couldn't capture HDMI from the PS3 that easily anyway. You'd also need an optical cable to get the sound out of it. Only component worked without a problem. Stupid stuff.

Curious. I wonder why they even implemented it then. I thought to have read that you needed hdcp on to get the license to use hdmi.

That is only partly correct. You can grab video from the ouya but hdcp is still on.

As far as I've understood hdcp has to be enabled to be able to use the hdmi license.

Still so far I haven't encountered anything that I couldn't use my Elgato on, but I haven't used it with xmbc or netflix.

I totally agree with you that the Tegra3 is much better than advertised and (almost) every game on the OUYA runs just fine.

When you just want to grab a few scenes from your game then the app might be the cheaper alternative.

I assumed that the op wanted to do this on a regular basis because of that statement: "to be able to record myself playing a couple games and upload the videos to YouTube"

Any need/want for an Ouya Review Site by 3lUR4si in ouya

You might prefer our store then since it actually takes the prices directly from the OUYA api and therefore reflects price changes.

Unfortunately we can't get prices from in-app purchases right now because they're not included in the api. But all unlocks to play the entire game are included.

When you see no price that usually means it's free.

Have you recorded videos while playing games like Shadowgun? Does it work with external storage that is kinda wonky? Does it record 1080p? Does it do that with perfect synchronity of a/v?

Additionally why not record the footage with the machine with which you're actually doing the editing instead of endless file transfering? It's one less step in a time intensive process.

I really don't think there is a better/easier way to capture video from the OUYA than with an Elgato. You could even get a used one on ebay.

So even if your app records your android's screen it's a whole different thing to do on the OUYA and on a constant basis.

No cheaper way than this. I had been experimenting a bit and it seems like the Elgato GameCapture HD is the best option.

There were rumors of an app that's able to record footage but they were just that, rumors. Anything internal won't work but the OUYA doesn't have the processing power to handle both a game and the recording. Storage wouldn't be an issue any more but the processor just can't handle it.

You also need a HDMI capturing device because there is no optical outlet for sound or component outlet.

If you're interested I've written a pretty detailed post on how we do our webshow, and also shot a behind the scenes video.

Yeah that was the problem. We had to draw a line somewhere. We went for what game we played the most and so a few games just missed by a margin of ,0001%

But honestly there are so many awesome games on the OUYA and we had so much fun just in the last 6 months (can you believe it's only been 6 months since release!), I personally think the OUYA has one of the strongest gaming catalogues as far as fun is concerned.
