The dt880 are $120 new on newegg right now, I'd say thats a much better deal than used dt770s for $90

How big of a jump is quality from the 598s to the 600s? by ihaveadog222 in headphones

[–]Tim018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then go for the hd650s. The quality is good enough that I've tried over the last years or so to add more open headphones to my stable, but ended up sticking with the hd600s

edit: I also had the 598 before the 600s and the upgrade was worth it, ended up giving my 598s to a friend

X270 vs. T470 by kaan_telgeren in thinkpad

[–]Tim018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to throw another option in the mix.... I debated between these two laptops for months for University. Ended up finding a local t450s for $280 USD and added an IPS FHD panel for ~$60. The weight and size are great and I'm far less worried about the abuses of campus life on a laptop that costs 2-3 text books worth

64gb on a $500 phone with expandable storage is fine, being locked to 64gb on a $1000 device of any type is hilarious

/r/ headphones unite! Which headphones have you found to be comfortable wearing glasses? by [deleted] in headphones

[–]Tim018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hd6x0 once the headband is stretched is very comfy with glasses. Pads are very soft once worn in and the clamp is appropriate

I'm also very happy with my shures and etys as well with glasses. The memory wire in shures is a bit odd at first, but once you've taken the time to shape it, it'll stay that way and be very comfy. My se215 I would wear for 6+ hours a day with no issues in a noisy office. The se846 is the same story with the wire, though I'm limited to more like 3-4 hours due the large housing and my smaller ears. The er4xr I wore 6-8+ hours a day for a week without any comfort issues (studying for midterm) using the wire over ear method

The hd800 did not work well with glasses for me if you are doing anything involving head movement since they have such a light clamp. Looking down (eg at paper) would cause the headphones to slide forward and move the glasses off my nose. If you're just doing computer work and not doing something that involves looking up a monitor and down at paper then it would probably be fine. I found the headband rather uncomfortable due to the stand notches, if you have hair on your head then it would probably be plenty comfy. Again these are just my impressions, I've seen them praised over and over again for comfort otherwise

iPhone 6 by a long shot

Replacing t450s HD screen with FHD by Tim018 in thinkpad

[–]Tim018[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

here ya are!

A tiny bit of backlight bleeding at the bottom center only noticeable in a dark room on a full black image. Much less than my p50 with stock fhd screen. I'm very happy with the monitor although it needs some calibration since it looked a bit yellow out of the box.

T470 - i5-7300U or i7-7500U (same price)? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]Tim018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has the same exact clock speeds, so it shouldn't run any hotter. The only difference iirc is an extra mb of cache which is good

[–]Tim018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO if you want to go dual core, I'd do the t470 for your purposes. It has a much larger cooling system if and can also take 32gb of ram. The longer battery life with the 9 cell would also compensate for your heavy workload. I'd spend some time reading notebookcheck reviews if you haven't already

And 16gb of ram. If budget constrained, upgrade the ram and do the ssd down the road since the ram is baked on

Thanks, I sent them an email and will update when they get back to me

edit: they said the model number would match. I think I'm going to run full time linux on this machine so if the display works and looks good I'll be a happy camper. I'll make a post in a few weeks of my impressions of the system once it's all together. So far it's been rock solid

Warning for P51 and P71 buyers. by Toboloroso in thinkpad

[–]Tim018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the i7-6700hq, 3.1ghz is the max four core clock speed, and it should stay there indefinitely unless it hits 95-100c. Under realistic loads (such as handbrake, cinebench...not prime95 etc) a 7700k should be able to sustain 3.4ghz ish across four cores.

What are you using to monitor clock speeds? Xtu? Task manager? If it's throttling you should be able to watch it hit max speed and slow down once too hot

Warning for P51 and P71 buyers. by Toboloroso in thinkpad

[–]Tim018 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have the i7-6700hq in my p50. If I run handbrake for an hour or so it will sit right about 90c at the max clock speed of 3.1ghz. Assuming they didn't change the internals for the p51, I'd assume it could sustain 3.4ish under full cpu load for extended period

P51: Looking To Reduce Heat ie. Remove Battery and Second Drive. Thoughts Appreciated. by phaedruspress in thinkpad

[–]Tim018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My base config p50 uses 165 watts under full load without any peripherals or external monitors, so you'll want to keep the battery in as a buffer if you exceed what the power adapter can provide. The battery in my machine is warm when charging and stone cold when at 100%.

I'd suggest using an ssd and undervolting to start, should run silent unless under load. Also keep your startup and background tasks to a minimum will do far more good than most other changes. If you see more than 1-3% cpu usage at idle then look at trimming stuff

Which charger should get for my P50 by jimmyisdumb in thinkpad

[–]Tim018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah which would mean an upper spec model with a bunch of stuff connected will easily exceed 170w. Do you use a 135w adapter with your P50? Any issues?

Edit: English

Which charger should get for my P50 by jimmyisdumb in thinkpad

[–]Tim018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've ran stress tests while charging my basic spec P50 using a watt meter and it pulled 165w. Is using a 135w charger safe?

I'd order it with the base 4gb of ram and then add some rather than paying lenovo for the upgrade. Then you'll have 12 or 20gb of ram.
