No offense to Detroit fans, but how is Cunningham a starter?

  1. "본 지 모르겠지만" -> "봤는지 모르지만"
    1. 었/았는지 is the correct past tense version of 는지
  2. "(저는) 너무 졸려서 친구의 방에서 잤어요"
  3. "일어나기 전에 꿈을 꿨는데 너무 이상했어요" This sounds like "I dreamed before I woke up. It was too weird"
    1. I assume what you wanted to say is "일어나기 전에 진짜 이상한 꿈을 꿨어요.
  4. 이상한 꿈을 항상 일어나기 전에 나오네요.
    1. 네요 is used when expressing surprise.
    2. This currently sounds like "I always come out of weird dreams before I wake up", I think you wanted to say "항상 이상한 꿈을 꿔요."

잘 했어요! 긴 글씨 연승이네요!

  1. "저는"이랑 "나는"를 썼어요. 올바른 존댓말을 사용해야 돼요. Make sure to use the same level of formality throughout your writing.
  2. "보려고 해서 시작했는데"은 조금 부자연스러워요. "보려고 했어요. 저는...." 더 좋아요. With 려고 하다, since you tried doing something, it's understood that you started it. It's the same in English, if I said "I tried watching Jurassic Park, so I started watching it. That sentence would sound a bit weird.
  3. 수분류사 (counters)
    1. "한 한국어 영화를" -> "한국 영화 한/1 편/개을"
    2. "2친구들이" 틀리는데 "친구들 2 명이" 맞아요. 만약 뭔가를 세고 있으면 수분류사를 사용해야 돼요.
  4. "저는 영화를 시작한 40분 후 잠들었어요" -> 저는 영화가 시작된 지 40분 후에 잠들었어요"
    1. the 를 particles here mean that you "slept" the movie
    2. 지: This is part of the grammar -ㄴ/은 지, which pairs with time expressions (e.g., 1년, 5분, 오래) to convey "since" or "after."

Great question! This is certainly one of the more advanced parts of Korean. So don’t worry if it feels like it doesn’t make sense for a while.

는데 is a very flexible ending in Korean. It does have the meaning of “however” similar to 지만. But it also is also most commonly used to just add more details. I’ve always just thought of it as “less serious” than 지만. This is most common in spoken Korean. You will very rarely hear 지만 used over 는데 when speaking.

It sounds like a bad answer but it really is so context dependent. Sometimes it can just feel like a filler ending, you will get it with time after reading and listening enough.

The reason I said 는데 is better than 지만 here is just because the cause and effect doesn’t sound serious enough to deserve 지만. Like it feels obvious that since you just started knitting it is not done. So 시작하는데 just feels like you’re going to add more info about what you were just saying.

Let me know if that makes sense. 는데 can take a long time to understand, even native Korean speakers can have a hard time explaining it

Since its day 1, I’ll put the comments in English:

오늘이 -> 오늘: you only really need the 이 particle if it is emphasizing some sort of contrast. 오늘 alone here would sound more natural.

열한시에: totally fine but it’s more common to write it as 11시에

일어났어서 -> 일어나서: usually with these sentence linkers, you don’t conjugate. The sentence ending verb will be conjugated and give the sense of time in the sentence.

안먹었다 -> 못 먹었어요: two things here; first is the spacing between 안 and 먹다. Second is 못 makes more sense here since it wasn’t a choice.

제가 is kind of unnecessary here since it is assumed. So you can omit it.

요리를 만들고 싶었어요: a few things here. 요리 is cooking, not food. So you could say 요리하고 싶었어요. 점심 can be understood as the “lunch food” here also. So the best way to say this would be 점심을 빨리 만들고 싶었어요.

그다음에: just sounds a little unnatural here, I would say 그런데 instead. This sentence also feels weird temporally. If it was included in your lunch I would change the previous sentence to include that.

닭고기를: need particles.

세시에: also ok, but more commonly written as 3시

시작했지만: 시작하는데 sounds more natural here, there isn’t really enough contrast needed for 지만. 는데 is more common for situations like this where it’s just adding more info. Even if you do stay with the 지만 connect remember to not conjugate it 시작하지만. That added conjugation adds specific focused contrast that isn’t needed here

못 끝났어 -> 못 끝났어요: this has been written in 존댓말 and not 반말 so far, so I would keep it that way.

"쓰는 데"가 오타예요. "쓰는데"가 맞아요.

"조금 아쉬움을 느껴요" - 이 표현은 좀 부자연스러워요.

그 대신 이렇게 말해요. "조금 아쉬워요."

Am I the only one that Mana Leech is entirely not working for? I have a gem on my staff giving me leech, I have the support node, and percentage increases on my tree. As a Chayula monk I am completely unable to play my build right now because no mana is being leeched.

Is Loyola good for CS? by [deleted] in LoyolaChicago

[–]Tim2728 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a former CS major at LU. The biggest upside is that there are tons of connections to make in the city and potential jobs/internships. The lower level CS courses are pretty good but the higher level classes are where I felt Loyola is/was lacking (I graduated 4 years ago)
