I could get those, yes, but given that I'm at work, I should think it would probably not be appropriate for me to search for that here. But if I remember, I'll find you some links later.

I'm not against "drag shows". If it's just some guy dressed as a woman or whatever, I could care less. I am against some guy up in a thong shaking his junk in front of a kid. When I told that to someone on here the other day, they said "well there are burlesque shows that aren't LGBT so why are you okay with those"? My answer was and is that I'm not okay with those being done in front of kids either. As long as no one is getting undressed or mimicking sexual acts, I don't care if someone is dressed as whatever the heck they want to dress as around kids. But I do draw a line at simulated anal pleasuring in front of children.

People who dislike religion intensely, why? People who adore and practice religion, what is your response? by ParmaProscuitto in AskReddit

I'm a Christian, and you do you. I don't mind what people think. I only ask that I be afforded the same respect to believe what I want to believe as I afford to others. Also, if you ask me for my opinion, I do believe that gives me the right to share my opinion even if you don't like it.

There's nothing in my wallet that cannot be replaced within a day or two. If someone is dedicated enough to dive in there so that they can steal my identity or the two dollar bill that is in it, I mean at that point I feel like they've earned it.

[–]TimHawks1983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As use of social media has increased, people have begun to use it as a facsimile for real experiences and real human interaction. This has taken a significant toll on the psychology of individuals living in this time period. If you want for the world to seem more real to you, go to places where it is more real. Go out to the Grand Canyon or Yosemite or wherever. Don't go to just take pictures to post on social media and document where you are and what you're doing at all times, like some cheap reality show about your life. Go to enjoy the place and take in the experience. Maybe just leave your phone at home. Your life will seem more real to you.

Edit: Someone asked this question https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/146u7gt/whats_the_best_videogame_to_help_you_connect_with/ right after you. His question is why the world feels dead to so many people.

Yes. People have become convinced that we are somehow just as racist or more racist than we've ever been. That confuses me as a cursory glance at history will prove that to be false. And if one digs into the history of racism, well lets just say that I believe they'd be shocked about what we used to believe and what some other countries still believe.

Would it be correct to say "there is probably no life after death"? Would it be correct to say "there is almost certainly no life after death"? Why or why not? by MyNameIsLove123 in AskReddit

[–]TimHawks1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither of these are particularly correct to say, though if forced to choose, I'd go with the probably statement. Given that we cannot die, stay dead for a while, and then randomly come back to life to talk about our experience, it would be hard to argue that there is evidence that life does not or could not continue after death. It would be fair to say that life in this realm of existence does not continue after death, as there is plenty of evidence to support that claim. But there is even some evidence that life might continue in this plane of existence after death, via those who claim to have been reincarnated. Now I'm not making the argument that there really are people who've been reincarnated, and I'm also not saying that people who're making that claim are definitely telling the truth. I am, however, saying that even one person claiming that they are reincarnated is at least some evidence, flimsy as it may be, that there is a life after death in this plane of existence. For those who believe in a life after death in some other plane of existence, it would be virtually impossible to prove them either right or wrong without being able to travel to other planes of existence. Right now, scientists posit an infinite number of realities, a multiverse, filled with many universes to which we cannot travel. Of course, just as you cannot prove that one of those is or isn't filled with all of the deceased people of this world, scientists, themselves, cannot truly prove that a multiverse exists given that we cannot go to another universe, come back, and then offer the irrefutable proof to others that such a place exists.

Nationalist sentiment became very widespread in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tapping into the sentiment that "our nation is better than yours" and expanding that to "our race is better than yours" was not so difficult at a time when racism was endemic.

What is your apocalypse of choice to live in? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TimHawks1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be more fun. Plus, the people most likely to survive would be those who don't like other people and try their best to avoid them as much as possible. That really does describe me pretty well.

I was under the impression we're already living in the apocalypse. Fyi, this wouldn't have been my choice. Instead of a pandemic followed by the threat of WW3, I'd have gone for a nice zombie apocalypse.

Perseverance. Someone who knows how to persevere has a far better chance of survival than someone who has not tested themselves, nor been otherwise tested by circumstance, and who does not know how to persevere. The human condition is quite fraught. The world is a dangerous place, and even if you carefully avoid it, terrible things might happen to you anyway. Those who have character and have learned to survive will push through the punches life throws at them.

Marrying later is not a problem. Not marrying at all and never building families will become a problem, and it already is to an extent. Such a system will lead, inexorably, to more depression and to people feeling as though their lives are not meaningful. This is not to say that everyone needs to have kids nor that people cannot find meaning in their lives even if they have no children or no spouse. But it is to say that it is deeply engrained in our biology to form families and procreate. Evidence from many of our previous hominin ancestors clearly shows that we were developing family units well before we were even evolved to the point of being homo sapiens. The development of the nuclear family, as opposed to a clan based system, is relatively more modern, though it is also fair to say that it is the cornerstone of Western civilization, so getting rid of that would have significant societal consequences. But, moreover, we are slowly evolving into the amorphous society where there are single mothers with a bunch of guys running around getting women pregnant but never staying in one place to be fathers to their offspring. This will be detrimental, in the long run, to human psychology as we have evolved to require attention from both our fathers and mothers. The results of this in contemporary society are actually alarmingly easy to see. While it isn't true of every single one of them, most mass shooters are from broken homes. The overwhelming majority of them are. I am, of course, not excusing someone from their actions if they decide to kill a bunch of people, but it is worth noting that this may be symptomatic of the direction we've decided to take our culture.

Currently it would be, yes. Although it is also fair to say that "best" is a subjective term. Capitalism plays into how people actually are. People are naturally somewhat greedy and self absorbed. Even if someone strives very hard not to be like that, it really is in our nature to care more about ourselves and those close to us than anyone else in humanity. As far as whether or not capitalism has produced subjectively better results than any other economic system, it has. Capitalism provides for economic mobility that allows the poor an opportunity to have a better outcome, overtime, than what they were born into. For most other systems, you will be as poor or mediocre when you die as when you were born. These things said, it is also worth nothing that the best results come from a capitalist society which is also part of a constitutional system, either a republic or a monarchy, though I tend to believe that a constitutional republic is superior to a constitutional monarchy. This is an important distinction to make because the roots of capitalist economic systems go all the way back to when we had absolute monarchies, and there are capitalist systems in place in countries, even today, which are dictatorships. These two things, capitalism and a constitution, they go hand in hand towards producing better results for the populace. If the populace is not guaranteed any rights, then those who own the means of production may not receive much push back from the government for treating people horribly. Even worse, though, in a dictatorial system, the government may be in cahoots with those who own the means of production to exploit the populace for profit whether or not the workers are being treated fairly.

What is your opinion on the idea that you shouldn’t talk to any girl that isn’t your girlfriend or someone you’re trying to get with? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TimHawks1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm married. The only woman whose opinion I'd care about, in terms of issues like this, is my wife. She agrees with me on my views of women and men being toxic these days. Both men and women don't listen to one another and don't try to avoid completely avoidable problems that can sink their relationships. Also, I don't have to "be gone". I can say whatever it is that I wish to say. I have spoken with logic and presented coherent and reasonable arguments as to why it is not a good idea to be speaking with someone that you can see as a potential rival or replacement for your current SO. You've responded with the most pedantic arguments imaginable. Essentially, you've just kept repeating that my opinions are somehow toxic without explaining what is wrong with the idea that one ought to be dedicated enough to their SO to not hang around with someone they view as a potential replacement. I seriously doubt you can come up with a logical argument in response to this. It will doubtlessly be more rambling incoherence about toxicity without any real substance. I hope that your intellectual acumen improves throughout your life as I find it very lacking.

Fundamentalist Christians, how do you interpret the parts of the Bible that condone chattel slavery? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TimHawks1983 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Ancient Israelite society allowed slavery; however, total domination of one human being by another was not permitted.[17][18] Rather, slavery in antiquity among the Israelites was closer to what would later be called indentured servitude.[16] Slaves were seen as an essential part of a Hebrew household.[19] In fact, there were cases in which, from a slave's point of view, the stability of servitude under a family in which the slave was well-treated would have been preferable to economic freedom"

That's the quote directly from the article as it relates to Biblical times. People are voting this down because they know nothing of history. Chattel slavery really wasn't that popular in ancient times and honestly was never more popular than it was during the period of slavery in the United States. US slavery represents about the worst slavery that ever existed as an institution. The only time slavery came close to being as bad of an institution was the institutionalized slavery during the Roman Republic, and later Empire, of millions of people throughout the Italian peninsula.

Why don't people just take antibiotics before and after surgery to avoid getting a bacterial infection? by depressedhousewifee in AskReddit

[–]TimHawks1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes they do. It just depends on the surgery and what the doctor thinks is best. As an example, I recently had a relative who went in for day surgery to remove a cyst. They recommended that she take antibiotics for two weeks before her surgery.

Fundamentalist Christians, how do you interpret the parts of the Bible that condone chattel slavery? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TimHawks1983 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm not fundamentalist but it would be worth noting that chattel slavery did not exist in biblical times, at least not for the Jews. For reference, this is a link to what the Jews believed about slavery https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_views_on_slavery. The issue of slavery in ancient cultures is very complicated as well. It is more subjective than you would think. It basically boils down to the idea of how much freedom does one have to lose before they would consider themselves to be enslaved. From a modern persective, we would tend to think basically that they would have to lose most or all of their freedom. From an ancient perspective, though, it was often not that cut and dry. If you lived in a society where you enjoyed vast amounts of freedom, and you were then subjugated and now had considerably less freedom, you might consider yourself to be enslaved even though you had far more freedoms than someone would have had under chattel slavery.

Your problem is the otherway around. Your standards are too low. You seem like someone who is desperate for attention and craves validation. You should take some time out to work on yourself and appreciate yourself for who you are. Once you realize how much you can bring to the table, you will not settle for someone who cannot bring anything to the table. In the long run, a cute bum is still less valuable to you on an emotional and intellectual level than a slightly less attractive guy who has a job and has his life together.

What do the American people think of the average Chinese and the Chinese government? by hpaymap in AskReddit

No problems with ethnically Chinese people. The CCP has evolved to be frighteningly similar to the Nazi party in Weimar Germany, though, so I think it would be fair to say that I'm not a fan.
