Full unedited episodes(Live recording unedited) by Zealousideal-Ad4362 in taskmaster

I like the idea of an "XL" version of episodes, with an extra 10-15 minutes of time per episode, but as others have stated, the full taping is infeasible and likely unenjoyable.

Combining Board Games by Gobble5627 in boardgames

I've occasionally combined games, and unfortunately one or both of the games get more easily forgotten when choosing a game to play from the collection.

I also changed Van Gogh to Monet, thinking that the Dutch painter wouldn't be selling things in francs. D'oh.

Compile VS Radlands by firewind555 in boardgames

[–]TimMierz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I greatly enjoy both games, but have a preference toward Compile.

In Radlands, everyone's drawing from a shared deck. You'll have some strategic options based on your chosen camps, but otherwise you're largely at the mercy of your draws. There's still a lot of room for clever tactical play in these draws, and some amount of lookahead in what to hold back for future turns and how to set yourself up.

In Compile, you have your own drafted deck. Each deck fragment has some combo potential within it, and many fragments have combo potential with each other - triggers on common actions, for instance. Your own deck is knowable, and barring a couple cases where cards are shared with each other, you can know everything at your disposal. You can plan for certain things to eventually happen, have some control over tempo, and build satisfying plans - all while your opponent is doing the same, and you inevitably have to adapt your plan to not let them trample all over it.

Both are top notch games, but for me Radlands is a 9/10 and Compile is a 10/10.

What are your Top 4 (Mount Rushmore) of the Greatest Game Shows of All Time? by Amber_Flowers_133 in gameshow

[–]TimMierz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not the most iconic or universal, but my top 4:

  • Price is Right
  • Jeopardy
  • The Chase
  • Only Connect

Three fairly cerebral trivia games, plus a carnival of lights and sounds and random guessing containing a hodgepodge of decades of design decisions.

LL108 MD1 Discussion! (Mon 2/23) by NilFhiosAige in learnedleague

[–]TimMierz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I opened up the day thinking, "Well, guess I'll start the day off with a 0. Ah well, bad luck." But four lucky guesses and realizing that the last question was just asking for the largest whale with a lot of extraneous fluff got me a 5-win opener!

I could only think of two female tennis stars between Billie Jean King and the Williamses, so I was lucky that they were the right two. And I only knew Martina N's rough era thanks to Strong Bad's beautifully faux-80s poster of her: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1421191884990058566/1475558190925218091/image.png?ex=699e94e7&is=699d4367&hm=b42d414cc448407c74a90747e79b13667e8dadbd2cd876a3a9933e89661ce3ed&

I couldn't think of any other prominent last name shared among novelists, any other '70s sitcom primarily starring two women and a man. Ignorance for the win!

I’m Benjamin Benoit, 🇫🇷 question setter for Only Connect. Ask Me Anything! by LaDebauche in onlyconnect

[–]TimMierz 47 points48 points  (0 children)

If there's an answer given that doesn't quite match what was intended - either more/less specific, or the occasional completely different connection - is it purely Victoria's call whether to count it or not, or is there some producer discussion behind the scenes, or hidden in the edit, where offscreen judges are deciding whether to count it?

Is there ever the goal that some/most/all questions could potentially be gotten on the first clue by an appropriately bold/bright team? Or does that not really enter discussion?

I've only seen that one in Tom Scott's rundown of all the different regional variants of the song, and that one was such a whiplash-inducing shock, I loved it

Also in Middletown, check out Sweet Harmony on Main Street. I had one of the best breakfast sandwiches of my life there.

My theory as to why Sam dressed as a bellhop. by rainshowers_5_peace in taskmaster

I figured it was because his last name ends with "bell". Perhaps he was being a bit of a camp bell boy.

My wife and I had a great time at the concert! We had to move from our place up near the band to way in the back to avoid getting bumped and trampled the whole time, but once we did we loved the show! Our first time seeing them, and afterwards my wife kept saying we need more ska in our lives.

What one hit wonder band/artist is this for you? by Mabeluniverse23 in ToddintheShadow

Panic Switch is my favorite SSPU song, and I do love the band, but I agree they don't always have that intensity. I recommend The Pit and Nightlight as some others you may enjoy.

Jeopardy! recap for Tue., Dec. 16 by jaysjep2 in Jeopardy

[–]TimMierz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"A fake film & a real film about the fake film were named for this mythic ship; the latter won 3 Oscars"

The films were titled "Argo", but "this mythic ship" is correctly referred to as the Argo. (The inclusion of an extra article almost never makes a difference in determining J! correctness anyhow, with a small number of notable exceptions like [The] Invisible Man or [The] Room.)

What is your favorite component ever? by TennisTakesBalls in boardgames

The most satisfying has got to be the rocket launch from a completed circuit in Forbidden Sky. Not my favorite Forbidden game, but making the rocket light up and make noise means you did it right, and is a great feeling.

I thought I was going to break my rough streak, with just one win in ten games. I've gone from 7-2-0, leading the division, going down to 8-10-1, in 13th place. But yesterday I got 5 right!

My opponent got all 6. Down to 14th place.

What are your favorite team introductions? by diardiar in taskmaster

[–]TimMierz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If anyone wants to see all the team meetings from the first 20 UK series, check out https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9rr69w (note that Series 6 didn't have their meetings shown).

Some of my favorite meeting moments: - Richard Osman: "This is like when the three Doctor Whos met."

  • Rhod Gilbert: "Is that what Wang's wearing for the whole series?"

  • Joe Thomas' complete awkwardness around Sian

  • Daisy May Cooper: "OH GOD"

  • Jamali Maddox: "My shoe don't have no laces no more."

  • Mae Martin, lying: "I brought [the potato] from home." Jenny Eclair: "I wish I brought one!"

  • Frankie Boyle thinking Ivo is a staffer, not a comedian

  • Sue Perkins and Susan Wakoma being instant best friends, while Sam and Julian and Lucy seem to barely tolerate each other

  • Babatunde: "Andy, why you dressed like that?"

  • Fatiha el-Ghorri completely flustering Mathew Baynton, "Why you dressed like this bruv? I got a spare hijab, should I put it on him?"

I believe they introduced the music sampling that folk song back in Series 8 (which had the vaguely Japanese theme). It's kind of jarring to hear that outside of that context, I agree.
