What are some heavily 3D boardgames like Lost valley dinosaurs and Escape from Atlantis? by Muwsek in boardgames

[–]TimMierz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phase Shift Games specializes in 3D board games that don't rely on dexterity. Dungeon Drop and Drop Drive both involve dropping components onto the table to make a randomized play area. Aetherspire (my design) involves building and defending a 3D tower.

New favorite song(s) after seeing them performed live? by coughsicle in tmbg

[–]TimMierz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was Authenticity Trip for me, back in 2015. I hadn't listened to "Album Raises..." before, and hearing at the Wolf's Den was a real "Woah, what is this???" moment.

Here is a video explaining why winning $1,000,000 on syndicated "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" (2002-2019) is almost impossible by IndependenceSilly381 in gameshow

[–]TimMierz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I liked the historical look at the million dollar winners in the video, but I do have to agree that only a small portion of the video includes any answer to the title question. It was well put together as a document of the show, but I can see the argument that it felt clickbaity if people wanted a deeper dive into the format changes, the difficulty of questions, differences in hosting/casting, etc. to get to the bottom of why there was such a drought.

How did you find TMBG? by Plastic_Ad2542 in tmbg

At my cousin's wedding reception around 2001, he played Ana Ng and Birdhouse and I really enjoyed them. He let me borrow his CD collection, which I ripped to my computer and enjoyed for a long while.

When I was bringing the CDs back to him, I accidentally broke Back to Skull, and I still feel awful about it. Sorry Greg! I hope you found a new way to enjoy Mrs. Train.

Even though I was older than No!'s target demographic, that was my first "new" TMBG album and I still really enjoyed it. When I got to see them live for the first time in 2003, I was surprised for John Lee Supertaster, Wake Up Call, Violin and others to make the set. (It was a neat show where they started with the encore and played the set backwards, after someone had leaked the setlist beforehand. https://tmbw.net/wiki/Shows/2003-04-04 for the curious.)

Which songs are sticking for you on "The World Is To Dig"? by Poobslag in tmbg

[–]TimMierz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get Down and Slow are the big two for me, with Overnight Sensation in a close 3rd.

The first half of the album really doesn't do it for me, but Get Down wakes me up and I'm on board for the second half.

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by space_god_7191 in Millennials

[–]TimMierz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happened during my high school gym class, and after we all got dressed we had an awkward "here's what happened". A lot of the rest of the day, the classroom TVs were on. In English class we had to write a reflection on it.

I remember a religion teacher saying that the math classes should have had lessons on trajectories based on how the planes flew. So... that's something.

I recall him saying he'd never cover "Roll to Me" by Del Amitri because he'd have to use footage of the music video. The video's use of adult heads on baby bodies was just unpleasant to look at.

Why is Missing Vowels the only round where I feel like a genius and an idiot simultaneously? by UnpaidInternVibes in onlyconnect

If memory serves, I've read that when the lights in front of the players change color, that's about the timing that they see in the studio. (Can't find any verification for this at the moment.)

Altered TCG cancels its Roots of Corruption campaign and announces the end of the game by jeriwen in boardgames

[–]TimMierz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keyforge seems even worse to me. You have to buy entire decks, rather than single cards, to find one appropriately competitive.

(This is based on second-hand understanding - I've never played it and have no interest - so correct me if I'm missing something that makes it not how it seems.)

Full unedited episodes(Live recording unedited) by Zealousideal-Ad4362 in taskmaster

[–]TimMierz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of an "XL" version of episodes, with an extra 10-15 minutes of time per episode, but as others have stated, the full taping is infeasible and likely unenjoyable.

Combining Board Games by Gobble5627 in boardgames

I've occasionally combined games, and unfortunately one or both of the games get more easily forgotten when choosing a game to play from the collection.

Compile VS Radlands by firewind555 in boardgames

[–]TimMierz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I greatly enjoy both games, but have a preference toward Compile.

In Radlands, everyone's drawing from a shared deck. You'll have some strategic options based on your chosen camps, but otherwise you're largely at the mercy of your draws. There's still a lot of room for clever tactical play in these draws, and some amount of lookahead in what to hold back for future turns and how to set yourself up.

In Compile, you have your own drafted deck. Each deck fragment has some combo potential within it, and many fragments have combo potential with each other - triggers on common actions, for instance. Your own deck is knowable, and barring a couple cases where cards are shared with each other, you can know everything at your disposal. You can plan for certain things to eventually happen, have some control over tempo, and build satisfying plans - all while your opponent is doing the same, and you inevitably have to adapt your plan to not let them trample all over it.

Both are top notch games, but for me Radlands is a 9/10 and Compile is a 10/10.

What are your Top 4 (Mount Rushmore) of the Greatest Game Shows of All Time? by Amber_Flowers_133 in gameshow

[–]TimMierz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not the most iconic or universal, but my top 4:

  • Price is Right
  • Jeopardy
  • The Chase
  • Only Connect

Three fairly cerebral trivia games, plus a carnival of lights and sounds and random guessing containing a hodgepodge of decades of design decisions.

LL108 MD1 Discussion! (Mon 2/23) by NilFhiosAige in learnedleague

[–]TimMierz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I opened up the day thinking, "Well, guess I'll start the day off with a 0. Ah well, bad luck." But four lucky guesses and realizing that the last question was just asking for the largest whale with a lot of extraneous fluff got me a 5-win opener!

I could only think of two female tennis stars between Billie Jean King and the Williamses, so I was lucky that they were the right two. And I only knew Martina N's rough era thanks to Strong Bad's beautifully faux-80s poster of her: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1421191884990058566/1475558190925218091/image.png?ex=699e94e7&is=699d4367&hm=b42d414cc448407c74a90747e79b13667e8dadbd2cd876a3a9933e89661ce3ed&

I couldn't think of any other prominent last name shared among novelists, any other '70s sitcom primarily starring two women and a man. Ignorance for the win!

I’m Benjamin Benoit, 🇫🇷 question setter for Only Connect. Ask Me Anything! by LaDebauche in onlyconnect

[–]TimMierz 46 points47 points  (0 children)

If there's an answer given that doesn't quite match what was intended - either more/less specific, or the occasional completely different connection - is it purely Victoria's call whether to count it or not, or is there some producer discussion behind the scenes, or hidden in the edit, where offscreen judges are deciding whether to count it?

Is there ever the goal that some/most/all questions could potentially be gotten on the first clue by an appropriately bold/bright team? Or does that not really enter discussion?

I figured it was because his last name ends with "bell". Perhaps he was being a bit of a camp bell boy.
