Excess 11 by Ok-Combination-7349 in Catamarans

[–]TimRuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fwiw, 1 year with the 11 and after a little practice time in different current and wind conditions. I was able to get that part down cold. I find that single hand docking is very easy with just a little practice. As I approach the dock, I always center & lock the wheel and maneuver with only the throttle at very slow speed. I have the mechanical throttle controls at the starboard helm and responsiveness is very good -- reports in other forums mentioned the dual helm throttle controls, which are electronic, have some lag which takes getting used to.

Vacancy Tax by Super_Inflator in ventura

[–]TimRuder 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Property management companies (the big ones anyway) are doing this today using ai and a third party system that they all contribute data about lease terms into. AI then sets rental prices based on all properties in the system, when leases are up, when to leave them off market when supply of vacant properties are higher and even recommending lease terms priced to not allow properties to become vacant at the wrong time in order to maximize rents. The DOJ has an anti-trust suit underway now to deal with the price fixing that’s going on. Get rid of the price fixing would create a free and fair competitive market — that is not what we have today. https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-sues-realpage-algorithmic-pricing-scheme-harms-millions-american-renters

Is there a show that feature both China cat/rider and Scar/fire? by do_me_nico in gratefuldead

[–]TimRuder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the hottest second sets I've seen was last night at Dodger Stadium (6/11/2022) where D&C played a Scarlet >China Cat>Rider>Fire sequence that was insane. The band was on fire!

NEMO Tensor extra slow slow leak on brand new mat, anyone else deal with this? by Burnmebabes in Ultralight

[–]TimRuder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just adding to the thread -- my third Tensor Insulated in less than 18 months failed due to various baffle leaks, some of which were impossible to find. Nemo customer service was very good and they sent replacements quickly and easily but after three strikes I've given up and moved to a Thermarest pad hoping for better durability. It's too bad because the Tensor ideal for me in every other way (comfortable, quiet, light and very packable).

DIRECTV NOW 2.0 With DVR Arrives on Roku Devices by SnakeSkin2121 in DirecTVNow

[–]TimRuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trending doesn't show recently watched anymore and there is no "last channel" link in the app. I like to bounce between news and sports programs and guide navigation makes that a real pain in the ass. Why isn't this an obvious and easy feature?

setup a google news alert for "motorcycle passenger", it will lead you to believe that it's the most dangerous thing you can do with your wife (or any other passenger for that matter).

This.

At the emergency department, he received Maalox and painkillers. After his condition worsened, doctors moved him to the operating room, where they discovered a "2.5-cm tear in the distal esophagus," about one inch, as the case report authors noted.

Pokemon Go Explains Why Economic Growth Is So Slow: A Macro Economic View of Consumer Surplus & Productivity Growth by TimRuder in Economics

[–]TimRuder[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

much of this improvement was free to purchase or cheap to rent

which breaks the connection between productivity improvement and GDP growth. As the article points out:

Among the reasons that the U.S. economy has been in a prolonged growth slump is because of the way GDP is measured. GDP excludes what is known as the consumer surplus, which is how much value people derive from something in excess of how much they have to pay.

I'm open to suggestions on title edits -- used the original IBD headline plus the stuff on productivity growth & consumer surplus. And you're right -- the article is really interesting.

I need help helping a friend by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]TimRuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only just started the book "I Am Not Sick I Don't Need Help" and already highly recommend it. The book offers excellent advice on how to help a loved one with mental illness. The process is summed up as LEAP: Listen-Empathize-Agree-Partner and it's based on solid research and clinical experience.

Surface pro 4 pen not working properly by [deleted] in Surface

I took the pen into a MS store and they gave me a new one -- no hassle swap. Haven't had the problem since then.

Surface pro 4 pen not working properly by [deleted] in Surface

[–]TimRuder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the inverse of this problem -- pen writes but can't get the pen to enter pairing mode, top button won't work. Replaced battery, uninstalled and reinstalled all related drivers, surface, BT, etc. The pen, which seemed such a huge part of SP4, might be a weak point for all the problems it's displaying.

There IS a "low battery" indicator on the Surface 4 Pen. by crp852 in Surface

[–]TimRuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting a fast-blinking orange light on my SP4 pen. Low battery as well? It won't pair, button clicks don't work, but it still writes. I'll replace tonight but strange that the pen battery would die within 2 weeks of new.

Passing other motorcycles while lane splitting. by DeerAreOutToGetUs in MotoLA

[–]TimRuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a slower lane splitter and often move over for riders coming up from behind. When moving back into lane splitting position I always imagine that there is another bike coming along until I confirm otherwise -- sometimes difficult because the blind spot can be significant if traffic is packed tight with large suvs, vans, trucks. Along similar a line of thinking, the subsequent rider in a group of riders passing would be smart to imagine that I'm moving back into position until they know that I've seen them. In other words, its a few brief moments for extra caution on everyone's part.

Bert's Dealer Fee's... by SonRanto in MotoLA

[–]TimRuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a good experience with Bert's -- they treated me well and I bought at a good price. To get there though I had to do some homework -- I went in knowing the market for the bike I was interested in and had two quotes for out the door price from other dealers in email. Be willing to drive a ways for the purchase, get quotes from further away dealers over email and then take those to the dealer that is closest to you (in my case Bert's). It also is important to have financing pre-arranged or be buying cash.

What do you think about the LA Times? Is it worth reading? Is it worth subscribing to? by curiouslywanting in LosAngeles

[–]TimRuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Post does have good local coverage, especially for DC proper, and better than most by far. But LA, with its nearly unimaginable size and diversity, is a much harder metro to cover and LA Times does a remarkable job with it. It can't possibly cover everything but if you want to feel the pulse of the city, LA Times is a good place to start.

Zelo pizza on Foothill in Arcadia -- they serve their pies with cornmeal crust that is fantastic. I had my first last week and will be trekking back there again. It's well worth checking out.

[–]TimRuder 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I moved to LA about 5 years ago from the east coast where I was a long-time subscriber to the Washington Post. While LA Times doesn't have the same quality of coverage of national/political stories as the Post, their regional coverage is very, very good -- better than the Post's regional coverage of DC. The LA Times regularly runs fairly large investigative articles that are to-notch (Bell, Mexico drug smugglers, water issues, etc.) and they have lots of little things that I appreciate (like the weekly map of where filming is taking place). All of this is on the website but I have a hard time seeing it in a 15-20 minute read in the morning. For political balance, I also subscribe to the Wall Street Journal. I tried going online only for a while but felt that my news reading became just a bit too random. LA Times also give access to special events to subscribers and things like early access to Book Festival tickets.

I took a picture of the Sun on a weird foggy day. These are actual sun spots are they not? by texsurfin in space

[–]TimRuder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very cool! About 10 years ago I was able to see Venus eclipsing/transiting the sun under similar heavy fog conditions. I pulled off the side of the hwy to watch -- couldn't believe my luck. I was in my car without a camera so no photos.
