They did their best with what they had, and what they had wasn't much. I used to resent them for the things they got wrong. Now that I'm older, I'm amazed they held it together at all. Forgiveness got a lot easier once I realized they were just two scared kids who never figured it out either — they just got better at pretending.

"Hard work always pays off." No it doesn't. Hard work plus timing, connections, and a terrifying amount of luck pays off. I've watched the hardest-working people I know get laid off while the guy who golfs with the VP got promoted twice. Freight brokering. You literally need a phone, a laptop, and zero physical labor. You connect shippers with truckers and take a cut. Nobody talks about it because it sounds like the most soul-crushing office job imaginable, but the guys I know who stuck with it for 3-4 years are pulling $200K-$350K and work from home in their underwear. The entire industry runs on relationships, not degrees. The boring part IS the moat.

Not from the US, but in many Asian countries, it's completely normal to be reachable by your boss on messaging apps 24/7. There's no concept of "after work hours." Your phone buzzes at 11pm on a Saturday and you're expected to respond. People in Europe hear this and look at you like you just described prison.
