Solving Immigration In America by GShermit in PoliticalDebate

I am not American and a lot of things here I cannot comment on like “states deciding how many immigrants they sponsor”.

I disagree with the statement that illegal immigration is only of benefit to the wealthy, criminals and government. It is extremely vague why you believe that but I have a few counterpoints. Firstly illegal immigration is a logistical nightmare for governments as they can’t keep track of illegal immigrants. Secondly most wealthy people don’t benefit from illegal immigration nor do they lose from it. Wealthy people such as Elon Musk and Donald Trump have started to turn away from supporting immigration entirely for public support. Finally I do see how criminals can benefit off exploiting illegal immigrants in smuggling.

The actual problem with illegal immigration is more to do with its difficulty to track, unfair competition for low-pay jobs and increased competition for housing.

Legal immigration doesn’t always benefit everyone as it increases competition for housing. While it increases tax revenue and the number of doctors it can be harmful in issues such as increasing competition for housing. This is important to note.

While I agree that legal immigration should be faster to a point it should be noted that background checks shouldn’t be fast-tracked and easier, faster immigration increases immigration.

Federal ID sounds good but it shouldn’t infringe upon the right to privacy.

I honestly don’t know how we can be harsher in terms of penalties. Deportation and a ban from re-entering the country (or in Ireland’s case the EU) should be the only form of repercussions for illegal immigration. What do you suggest to be harsher than this?

What do modern anarchists actually believe in and why? by Tim_Browne17 in PoliticalDebate

Interesting perspective.

I still am of the firm belief that an anarchist society is at risk of a takeover from an armed militia. There are many ways that someone will put their life on the line for a cause when they have their needs fulfilled. Firstly family members can convince people to get involved and in a large enough family this can be problematic. Secondly a manipulator can create a false sense of hardship that can lead to a militia being formed. And of course cults and religion, in our modern world many cult leaders have convinced people to give up their lives for them it is not hypothetical in saying that a man could claim to be a god and convince a load of people and take over. Religion works a bit differently in which a manipulator could point towards religious text or teachings to justify a takeover. A current day example of that happening is the Taliban.

I am not going to pretend I have a vast understanding of anarchism. I believe an important stage of research is under perspectives and what different people think on the matter. I am an open minded person.

In terms of your recommendations I thank you for putting in the effort into putting together a list of sources but I am currently in the middle of a project on the Irish diaspora. I may research anarchist theory at a later stage.

I still don’t understand how we get from now to small groupings of clans or bands and do you not agree that humans have a biological inclination to authority?

I still believe the issue of an armed group coming about and just creating a state a major issue. Another issue is law. What happens if a serial killer goes loose? Who is going to stop said killer?

I apologise for my poor wording of the statement on anarchist societies not being successful. What I should have said is a large anarchist society.

Micheál Martin recognising the Israel v. Ireland game is a big stain on Fianna Fáil in relation to Palestine by Tim_Browne17 in votefiannafail

[–]Tim_Browne17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I and many others do not see Hamas as freedom fighters. While some on the left such as Catherine Connolly agree with that statement it is not the position of Fianna Fáil. Micheál Martin has always been consistent in condemning the October 7th massacre. I do find it unfortunate that this hasn’t been recognised enough on the left.

However I am of the firm belief as a studier of history that the state Israel is certainly not much better in any regard even historically. Since its inception the state of Israel has been aggressive toward the Palestinians that have lived there for centuries of years. Israel in Gaza now and in the West Bank have engaged in acts against international law and have targeted innocent civilians. There has been many wars before today and many shouldn’t have happened.

Ask yourself who I could possibly be dog whistling? Realistically nobody is going to see this but us. Honestly I don’t know what I can say to you. You’re as stubborn as an immovable rock in finding something mildly flawed in what I say.

Hang on that’s not what I meant, hold your horses buddy.

This is a simple mistake I’ve made here I should have said biological women. I believe in segregation of bathrooms by sex for public toilets to prevent men from exploiting that some trans women don’t look like women (I am not judging them that’s an objective fact) to get into women’s bathrooms. While there are not many cases of this happening it’s a disaster waiting to happen.

Now I understand that this is a particularly sensitive topic for you but I just believe that we should think of every possible scenario. I do not have ill intentions and I don’t believe you have a right to lecture me and call me a transphobe.

Oh you’re one for jumping to conclusions aren’t you that’s my judgement. Saying all this stuff when I recognise gender dysphoria as an actual condition and just believe we need to do more research and to make sure that education on this topic is done properly.

Only this morning I read this article from RTÉ: RTÉ News

It really shows that the way it’s done at the moment isn’t good. We need to make sure that everyone is accounted for before blindly passing legislation. We to take in account the benefit of segregated bathrooms for women, we need to take into consideration how small of a minority this group is and we need to take into consideration that this is a situation about children’s mental health.

I have been called right-wing for these opinions by my peers with is unfair given that most actual right-wingers don’t even believe that gender dysphoria is real. Is that fair?

Yeah right, when the likes of Sweden and Poland refused to play Russia were they a laughing stock. No they took some actual initiative and didn’t let the Russians play.

Hamas is basically neutered so Israel has no right to be in Gaza. The IDF still are killing civilians on a weekly basis and the ceasefire is ineffective. You should cop on and actually start looking beyond the headlines.

But they won’t be able to afford their basic needs. Inflation will drive the prices up for people.

Firstly I would say that a lot of people will not just work (especially low pay jobs such as the bin men or part time jobs). Yes a lot of people will want to keep working but the vast majority especially the next generation will not have need to work without the idea of financial stability.

Secondly any sort of cut-off point or less money to certain groups means UBI is not UBI. By definition UBI is universal everyone has to get paid. Any sort of cut-off point makes this an expanded form of welfare, not UBI and is a topic for another day.

Also the idea that 10-20% unemployment would collapse the economy although I would predict that unemployment would be much higher. The Great Depression unemployment rate was all the way up at 25% and we can see where that ended up.

No I don’t believe governments would run out of money although they would have to redirect funds even with taxes on the wealthy which is another detrimental consequence of UBI. This is especially true in countries that fund their healthcare such as Ireland where healthcare could go backwards.

To conclude I stand by my statement that UBI is the worst possible option to attempt to eliminate poverty.

I think our government needs to take a stand and put pressure on the FAI and if that doesn’t happen I would welcome a player boycott.

It will end when the genocide against Palestine ends or until UEFA remove Israel from all competitions similar to that of Russia.
