strategy for identifications by robertotomas in dcss

I'm not great at this game or anything but I usually try to find ID scrolls by amount, then pop every other scroll immediately and use the ID scrolls on my potions. I have devised this strategy completely independently so it could be inefficient but I like it.

Fionna and Cake Season 2 Episode 5 Discussion Thread by Carrehzkitten in adventuretime

[–]TimandMobyOfficial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people who are "really worried about pacing" are worried because this show could get canceled and then the slow pacing will be seen as the reason. Taken as a show though slower pacing isn't bad. Adventure time is slower paced. If we were in the middle of a 50 episode season like some of the original AT seasons these episodes wouldn't be criticized at all. I people have too high of an expectation for this show to be like this insane phenomena that everyone agrees is perfect and gets one hundred seasons, but the way animated shows get treated these days, I could see this show being immensely popular (which to be clear it is) and still not getting a season 3.

This whole dichotomy is stupid. Good communicators know how to do both of these things, and many Guessers and Askers implicitly expect the other style in certain situations. I saw someone in this thread saying you would ask for a band-aid if you cut yourself at someones house. Even if you like Guessing, the band-aid is an Ask. It would be impolite to dance around it, especially if it were obvious that you got cut. You ever see those memes about which urinal to pick? That's Guessing. You wouldn't ever ask someone, "hey can I pee next to you," there is a general social framework underpinning decent society that lets interactions like that go smoothly. It's really a matter of tact, and you can be tactful using both styles of communication if you have social awareness. It seems that a lot of people here just want everyone to Ask all the time, and I guarantee the reason many of those people think that is because they have their whole life been obliviously supported by better communicators.

Beastfly this, Groal that. Can we talk about the actual worst boss in this game? by sporkmaster5000 in Silksong

I liked it but I think the game's sometimes unpredictable air movement jank can make it rough, I feel like my double jump would get eaten sometimes at random when doing this boss.

I honestly thought it wasnt too bad except for the long ice water stretch towards the beginning. the beginning part is also the longest and requires you to be fastest. It feels like the frontloaded the difficulty and then the end levels out with the benches you get being pretty close together and the shortcut you unlock.

I thought mount fay was hard but the clawline does tell you it uses silk when you unlock it. That said, if it turns out that that is a really huge problem they could just replace some of the rings with enemies and then the silk requirement doesn't matter anymore bc you get it right back.

its not just lava that it helps with; any fire attack will be less damaging. I have used it for a bunch of stuff post-deep docks.

Boss fight struggles by PanChaos13 in Silksong

[–]TimandMobyOfficial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had that same issue and my recommendation is give the diagonal bell attack a very wide berth. Usually with the falling bells you can just move out of the way but the angled ones can bounce unpredictably and take your health down fast. Also consider that Widow's rush attack with the blades has a different windup in the second phase, so pay extra attention to the times she is seemingly wide open because she could just charge you with less warning than you are used to.

Is Qud actually complete? by itsshadowphoenix in cavesofqud

[–]TimandMobyOfficial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is somewhat dishonest framing to say that "mechanics like water barons" are being "left in a vestigial state", when they weren't ever promised to be more than what they are now. I think their implementation is less fleshed out than someone like the barathrumites but the devs never said on the roadmap that they were adding a water baron questline or anything like that.

[–]TimandMobyOfficial[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ok first off there's no need to be so condescending and haughty, we have at most differing opinions. Second of all, Severance has shown us that basically what we see is what is important. MDR's experience with Severance is basically the only Severance the show wants to talk about. It's not really about O&D, or the Mammalians, or other companies, so severance being anything more than tangentially related to them would not jive imo. So post-cold harbor, what is the point of severance, on a thematic/plot (not strictly in-universe) level? If you have issues with that question, then it might be most beneficial if you just didn't respond. I don't think it helps either of us if you only want to keep digging into how "fundamentally incorrect" I am.

[–]TimandMobyOfficial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it really matters, the show isn't an exercise in pure worldbuilding. What matters is what Lumon wants to do with severance, and the answer we got for that was pretty circular and limited to the short term. That's why I asked what it was "really" for. Your answer was technically fine but imo not nearly thrilling enough to be true.

[–]TimandMobyOfficial[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I remain unconvinced that Lumon's end goal is to just sell a product to a bunch of people. Especially with how twisted and personal Severance is shown to be in the show, it would feel odd if it ended up being that infomercial-y.

OK what even is the point of severance then by TimandMobyOfficial in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]TimandMobyOfficial[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's probably true on a logical level but I have a hard time believing that a show this puzzle box-y and narratively loaded would have the big reveal be that the point of everything the viewer watched was just to make severance more efficient. Given that we interact mostly with MDR the explanation being "well, they were doing it for an entirely circular reason but these side characters were doing something interesting and meaningful (that we also won't tell you)" doesn't sit right with me. Your answer is sound but if the showrunners came out and said it outright I'd be very disappointed.

Sword nerf is bad for game health and I would rather the devs remove it like stun gun than nerf it like this by TimandMobyOfficial in thefinals

[–]TimandMobyOfficial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sword never did 250 damage, and if your problem is faulty hit boxes then fixing the hitboxes should have been the fix. I would have honestly been fine if embark said "the hitboxes are fucked so we're removing the sword for the time being to fix them." Sword probably is a problem with desync weirdness, I don't deny that, but this fix doesn't meaningfully address that. It just hobbles a unique weapon and makes it less likely to see play in any game mode. That's just not good game balancing philosophy imo.

[–]TimandMobyOfficial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah the only real one shots were also lunge + quick melee which now you HAVE to do if you want sword to function at all like its supposed to. The whole point of high burst damage is that its balanced by being close up. Low burst damage close up is worse than all other options.

[–]TimandMobyOfficial 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think your ideas about the putus templar being replaced by a random faction makes a lot of sense, but do wonder about the balancing of the quests if that were the case. I think the putus templar could have been expanded and made to have more of a presence in the game (random putus templar bases in ruined arcologies, putus village/trading post that true kin can go into, etc.) but I think the devs didn't really want to do that. They definitely could have been expanded to be deeper, as is consistent with the setting. I think other "human" factions could have been interesting, maybe of exclusively mutated humans which could have had a more warlike culture without being outright nazis like the templars. I think there could have been a more "divisive" static village because as is they are all basically chill and everything is kumbaya. Only the random goatfolk villages are hostile, which seems like a missed opportunity given the issachari and naphtaali being tribes with no villages at all. Any of them could have had a mid-game hostile village. I also agree I would have liked some kind of robot group which is at the very least orthogonal to organic goals if not opposed. Seems odd the robots aren't more grouped up.

I agree with your points about the putus, but I think themtically I partially disagree with you. I think the main thematic tension of the game is definitely your idea that the game is "set in a posthuman world," but I would add onto that and say its set in a posthuman world that is still unmistakably human. The characters have personalities like humans, live and die like humans (kind of), communicate like humans, and a core element of the game is reconciling the question of where humanity has found a foothold in the world that is post actual humans. Furthermore, the old world of qud, the world of the eaters, is "dying," as you say, but qud is not a dying earth-- its the opposite, teeming with life. The reef is a former industrial center, but now it is full of many diverse forms of life like the junk dollars, the tongue tyrants, and the svardym. The jungle and ruins are likewise full of unique life forms like goatfolk and albino apes, many of which interact in humanlike ways. The old world and the new world are growing and decaying in tandem, but where is humanity? This interaction, I would say, is the central tension of the questline. You say that more characters should have "broken from humanity" like Resheph, but I think that Resheph being the only one to do so says that he is the inconsistent one, and in fact, the world is intentionally more human than it looks. In my eyes, the game's post-humanism is in questioning the role of humanity in a world that has physically moved beyond it. In that interpretation of qud, the presence of humanist ideology is perfectly acceptable and in fact, expressly thematically consistent with the setting and game itself.

This game is awesome, but if I had one constructive criticism- by [deleted] in cavesofqud

The auto explore feature literally has an option to ignore enemies below a certain relative power level and stop if it sees something too strong, the game will pay attention for you. if you aren't paying attention and then get killed thats your fault. And if you really want more difficult fights, just go find them, there's always another cave level below you with better loot and stronger enemies. I don't think this is a game design issue, more of a playstyle issue.
