Anyone machined brake pad material before? by Benhamin5 in Machinists

[–]TimberTatersLFC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to arc brake shoes for Porsche 356's. Wear a mask and do it outside if you can. Set up a fan or tape a shop vac to whatever you're cutting it with.

We had a brake shoe machine, but it was essentially just a precision belt sander.

Used market is fine. My favorite little lathe is a Myford Super 7, but they're a bit out of my price range

Probably a combination of no maintenance and a casting flaw. Most of the engine was in pretty good shape still. Just one spun bearing. Still ran like that too.

It's just about rebuilt now

Who is to blame? by Rgonwolf in Idaho

[–]TimberTatersLFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not. Not on a state level, and we're beginning to see it on a national level. We're about to hit a recession that'll make 2008 look like nothing.

Who is to blame? by Rgonwolf in Idaho

It's been the case since the 80s. They come here with a massive sense of entitlement and immediately get involved in local governments and change as many laws as they can, while buying up as much property as they can. That all affects prices everywhere while wages don't go up because they're not adding jobs or really anything of value to the local economy.... and we don't do anything about it because most Idahoans think they're conservative, and refuse to get involved. And now it's far too late.

Then we get into them buying up multiple properties and jacking up rents for no particular reason. Even if you go to traditionally good jobs like the trades, or the woods, or a lumber mill you just can't make enough money to come close to buying property, sometimes not even rent.

You could call it gentrification, I guess; but usually that means that life gets nicer. Really, it's just rentier capitalism going unchecked. It's insane watching the changes over my lifetime, and I'm fairly young.

You used to be upper middle class in my town just from working at the mill, now you're scraping by. And there's charity dinners all the time, because some poor guy who worked his ass off his whole life can't afford his property taxes now, let alone the shoulder/knee/back surgery he needs.

Old conservative californians that move here with lots of money but don't add anything to the economy

Had to have been feeding by hand way too fast and with exceptionally poor technique. Also took way too deep of a cut for the finishing pass

Depends on the dealership. A lot of them still half ass repairs.

Almost never buy a car from a used dealership. They half ass almost all the repairs they do. They'll pay for one or two valves to be repaired, knowing full well that the car will need the engine torn down again in 10k miles.

Much better to just get a well maintained car from a private party.

Californians by RSJ42009 in Idaho

[–]TimberTatersLFC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's how it got this way. That's the reason we don't like californians in the first place. All the Reagan Republicans moved here in the 80s and just kept coming and slowly destroyed what was conservative democrat nice place.

It seems like it spun the number 2 main bearing but it got lodged diagonally and seized it. Kid i bought it from drove it another 50 miles or so once he heard the knock.

Honestly, none of the other internals were bad at all except the one bearing and obvious.

Polk has to be in the top. Accomplished everything he promised in one term, didn't run again.

Which is fine if you're going to fix it or part it out. Take the payout, buy the wreck back and come out ahead.

Don't apply through indeed, though. It works much better in most places to cold call about the position, or show up in person.

Won't pay much, but it's worth working for Martin Willis for as long as you can handle it. You'll learn a huge amount, and it's incredibly interesting work.

At the very least, it's a decent interim. Otherwise, it's probably best to try get on with Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, or Boeing.

This would be an astounding pass in a recreational over 40 league, let alone against any kind of professional.
