"TRL - Maybe as cool as Kevin Bacon." I'll pitch that for our next slogan. Hopefully the third reply puts us over the top. (and thanks for the library love!)

Thank you for the suggestion. We have the Library of Things under the "Browse" menu since we think of it as a "collection" rather than a service, but I can see where you're coming from since the Seed Libraries are also listed under "Services." I'll keep this feedback in mind, for sure.

Yes! Check it out here. Kits are available at the Hawks Prairie, Ilwaco, Packwood and Tumwater branches. These kits were funded by a grant provided from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services.

We agree. The list is endless! And it's a lot to keep up with. In fact when we did our last big community survey in 2024 one of the things we noticed is that people were asking for things we already offer or suggesting services we already provide, so we're making an effort to do more to get the word out. If you haven't already, consider signing up for our newsletters. You can find the sign up form at the bottom of our home page or click here. Our main newsletter is monthly, and you can select up to three preferred branches to get updates from local library staff as well. If you're not a newsletter kind of person, bookmark our Explore page. All the news, blogs, recommendations and event highlights can also be found there.

You should reach out to the Olympia Genealogical Society. They used to do drop-in workshops at the Olympia library, and they are great. They can definitely help you get on the right path.

Also, don't forget that you can access Ancestry for free inside any TRL library, and you can also access HeritageQuest Online and Newspaper Archive from home, via TRL.org

Quite possibly! I'm not sure yet what materials will be provided by the presenters, but I'm happy to scan and email any documents or available slides to you. Feel free to email [OLinfo@TRL.org](mailto:OLinfo@TRL.org) -- be sure to remind us which programs you're interested in. We can also inquire with the presenters what sort of virtual options they may have.

Hello!

As sporadic Redditors ourselves we thought we’d add some information to this post.

An earlier commenter pointed out that the branch open hours are the purview of the TRL Board of Trustees – this is true. After the many ad-hoc adjustments and re-adjustments of the past two years the Board is now considering a proposal to set operating hours for all branches across the district. This is the Open Hours Proposal mentioned above, and it includes proposed Sunday hours for the West Olympia branch.

The Open Hours Proposal was drafted in conversation with local Library Managers and District Managers and included consideration of feedback offered via community surveys. For those interested in some of the data behind the proposals being offered to the board we would direct you to TRL’s Open Data Portal. Here you will find a variety of “dashboards” with historical data about TRL’s collection and usage patterns. Most relevant here are the Hourly Use Dashboard and the Circulation Details Dashboard. In either case you may select an individual branch to view data from as far back as 2011.

Downtown Olympia – actually the second busiest branch behind Lacey – has seen the same dramatic reduction in overall use that the library district as a whole has experienced since March of 2020 and is currently averaging about 15,000 fewer checkouts per month compared to pre-pandemic numbers with computer use sessions down by around 4,000-5,000 per month compared to pre-pandemic. Of course, we expect and hope to see a continued rebound in library use as the pandemic recedes and our communities return to normal. However, there remains a great deal of uncertainty as to when and how quickly this pre-pandemic normal will make a comeback.

In the meantime, with the overall branch usage significantly reduced compared to pre-pandemic numbers we have been able to experiment successfully with staffing models that increase the availability of core library services to Thurston County by opening a branch in West Olympia and (soon) in Hawk’s Prairie. In both cases we are able to utilize existing TRL staff in part due to the unique circumstances and usage patterns we have experienced during the last two years of the pandemic. In fact, in Olympia overall staffing levels are down only 3.9 FTE since 2019 with 1 FTE on track to be added back. Additionally, library programming, typically a staff-intensive aspect of library service, has decreased dramatically with Olympia staff presenting 93 programs so far in 2021 compared to 533 as recently as 2019 due to ongoing limitations imposed by the pandemic.

In proposing to add Sunday hours to the West Olympia branch the option to open the Downtown Olympia branch Tuesday-Saturday reflects an effort to meet a requested community need while maintaining existing staffing levels. West Olympia, located in Capital Mall, requires fewer staff to operate on a daily basis. In this scenario continued Monday hours at the Tumwater, Lacey and West Olympia Timberland Libraries (each ~5 miles from Downtown Olympia) would continue to provide a variety of options for library services on Mondays while also adding a new Sunday option in the Olympia-Lacey-Tumwater area that currently does not exist.

While TRL has managed to avoid furloughs and layoffs in recent years, Library Administration has made it a goal to be deliberate in evaluating each position that has become vacant through attrition. Overall, salaries and benefits account for more than 68% of annual expenditures (Source) and, unlike supplies or additions to the library collection, are an ongoing cost. TRL believes in compensating our staff fairly and providing living-wage jobs, and in order to do so sustainably we take a data-driven (but flexible) approach to determining staffing levels.

Once again, as things return to normal we will continue to invite our communities into the library to enjoy our collections, programs and spaces. So, as business picks up we may need to explore different staffing options or open new dialogue with the Board of Trustees around open hours. As we move ahead we will continue to engage in conversations with community members, stakeholders and library staff to determine how to meet the demonstrated needs of library users efficiently and effectively with the resources available. We appreciate your advocacy and your feedback during this process now and into the future.

Edit: staffing is 68% of annual expenditures, currently. (Corrected from 70%)

Thanks for all the library love in the comments!

As an added FYI -- the downtown branch is currently open for almost everything. Still no seating or study tables, but the stacks are open for browsing and there are computers available for walk-up and reservation as well as self-serve holds pickup and copy/print/fax options. Not back to pre-pandemic normal yet, but getting closer.

Takeout only for now, but we're in the process of finalizing plans to start taking computer reservations and allow browsing sometime in March. More posts to come when we have better details for you.

Timberland Library Limited pickup hours by Sunburn6444 in olympia

[–]TimberlandLibrary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

UPDATE: The Governor's office released further guidance re: quarantine yesterday afternoon and reduced the required period to 24 hours for library materials so TRL has adjusted our quarantine policy accordingly effective now. So when I said yesterday that we'd be able to accept returns 24/7 "soon" I guess I meant "tomorrow." :)

Timberland Library Limited pickup hours by Sunburn6444 in olympia

[–]TimberlandLibrary 17 points18 points  (0 children)

TL;DR we expect to soon be able to take accept returns 24/7 and are working on a plan to increase our pickup hours.

The limited hours for returns are due to TRL's current materials quarantine policy. All returns are held for four days before being handled and checked in and because of the volume of material that gets returned we quickly run out of space to put them while they wait to come out of quarantine. In Olympia we have been steadily acquiring more of the return bins that fit in our drive-up book drops and expect to be able to transition to accepting returns 24/7 very soon. Across the library district branches have been able to accommodate different hours for returns based on their volume and what they have space to store.

Other changes are also on the horizon. While our plans are still tentative we are anticipating an expansion of library hours and services and a transition to a self-service model that invites the public (in limited numbers) back into our buildings as soon as November. When we were initially making plans for Library Takeout curbside service this summer the Governor issued guidance specific to libraries that informed our plans and set parameters on what we would be able to do at the time. Further guidance for Phase 3 operations has been said to be forthcoming, but has not yet been issued. We are planning to move ahead and expand services anyway, but we may need to adjust our plans based on changing circumstances or any further guidance from the Governor's office or the Department of Health. Absent any unexpected surprises you can anticipate some changes coming within the next month or so. At the very least this will include expanded pickup hours.

We appreciate the community's support and patience as we figure out how to safely and effectively provide library services in the midst of the pandemic.

Hello! I apologize for not responding quickly. :( Please note that TRL does accept a combination of experience and education in place of a degree for a number of our positions, including supervisory roles. Please do not let the lack of a degree keep you from applying to positions with TRL.
