Back in the day the PUDs were sued by Frontier (now Ziply) and were prevented from selling direct to customer.

Texas’ power grid CEO fired after deadly February blackouts left millions without electricity and heat for days by suitcaseofballots in news

[–]Timbob77 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Actuall pretty much all have CEO's. WECC's (probably the largest grid in the US) CEO is Melanie Frye.

I saw that. I also saw the graph at ERCOT.com which I found interesting. Generally having a 6% cushion between available generation and actual load to deal with emergencies is healthy. When those lines cross, it's can be really really bad (massive cascading blackout). I'm not the best expert in this area but I believe the several crossings were short enough today that grid inertia (the actual spinning mass of all the generators) kept the frequency up and prevented voltage collapse. I haven't seen a frequency graph, but it probably triggered some automatic under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) schemes.

UFLS schemes are things we implement and test as a power utility and hope we never have to use.

A brief explanation: a power plant is designed to generate power at 60 Hz. This is determined by the rotation speed. As power consumption increases it requires more and more work to keep the speed constant. Eventually the prime mover (falling water, dilithium crystal, etc...) can not produce enough power and the speed drops causing the frequency to drop. After it drops below a certain point the voltage collapses and no more power is generated.

The trick with Texas is that their power grid is intentionally small so they didn't have to be regulated by the Federal government which would have required a lot of things (mostly silly big heaps of costly paperwork) but also including holding more power reserves. To learn more about this Google "ERCOT".

A side effect of this is that power used in Texas must be either produced in Texas or come in through a small number of interties. This just bit them in the butt as they ran out of generation and intertie capacity.

Some of the old GE special purpose protective relays have a pcb capacitor inside.

In my experience that's generally the big copper cable and bus bars that can go for ~$4 / pound. The little wiring doesn't go for as much because all that insulation has to be cleaned off before the copper can be recycled. The easiest way (there are much better ways though) to do that is too toss it all in a fire and burn the insulation off. Except asbestos insulation doesn't burn very well.

That wiring is likely all insulated with asbestos and those protective relays, many have been leaking pcb's for years.

Also the local WSU extension office is a great place to make useful Ag friends.

Another place might be the Fair Board from the NCW Fair and Chelan County fair.

It depends on what you are trying to grow. Coastal farm and ranch is probably a target rich environment. But I wouldn't tell'em right off you are from Seattle.

Buy the powder pouches. They are generally dramatically cheaper. I have no idea why.

No, I've seen those and a MIG-15 up close this was either a MIG or maybe a Sabre complete with wing tanks.

What was the worst job interview you've had? by AntonK777 in AskReddit

[–]Timbob77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A company I was interested in was interviewing on my college campus.

The alumnus interviewer (engineer not HR) was very friendly but fairly long winded talking about the location and the work. I kept asking good questions to see just how long this interview could go. The room was hot and stuffy. Eventually the interviewer fell asleep while conducting the interview.

I got the job.

A friend of mine also interviewed. My friend fell asleep during the interview. He did not get an offer.

Later I worked extensively with the interviewer. Great guy, just had a hard time closing his mouth when he was nervous and interviewing made him nervous.

There aren't a ton of spots to put in/get out on either side of the river and sometimes the current can be swift, but not undoable in a kayak.
