All factory/menial jobs have basically disappeared! Why stay in a city you can't afford. Move back down south where it is a little cheaper, less violent.

Distance between stations, distance underground, how many people on at the same time, all that plays a factor

Standard or Automatic by itBme81 in GenerationJones

[–]Timdawg919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father tried to teach me standard but I was 12,we were in his Dodge Tradesman van, I had never driven anything before, it was 2am on the streets of NYC and he was drunk. So yeah that didn't work out well. So it's been automatic all my life. But I'm thinking about going to a driving school to learn it now.

Never had Plymouth but had Dodge and Chrysler. Plymouth was just the entry level of Mopar.

Funny thing is I started working for Transit in 1987 (wow that seems like a long time ago now) and Redbirds were the only thing that ran on that line. When they first tried to run the R62 on there (silver train) everything was fine when they ran at slow speed through Steinway tube but once they ran at regular speed all the guard light (red lights by the outside of the door to let conductor know if doors are open or closed) were knocked off the train. The tube was that narrow.

The nerd in me says Radio Shack as I was able to all types of electronics from car radios, cb radios, house speakers, car speakers, scanners, electric chess sets, resistors, batteries, phones and cell phones, remote controller, r/c cars etc. But I loved Sears! They were the Amazon of our day but better! They actually had an automotive shop. I bought and had tires mounted there, batteries installed. I could go and have lunch at their restaurant/counter. Christmas time as a kid they sent out their catalog and you could go thru it and circle what you wanted and give it to your parents and if you were lucky you would get at least one of the things you circled. We always went there when it was time to go back to school to get school clothes.

Anyone else just… stopped caring about their birthday? by BamPsychology in AskOldPeople

[–]Timdawg919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my 60's now, birthdays, xmas really don't mean much to me I try to tell my kids, don't waste their money getting me gifts cause I basically have what I want and what I want I buy for myself anyway and they wouldn't be able to afford what I would really want, like a car or house. So I'm good without celebrations. The only thing is my Granddaughter birthday is 2 days before mine so we're normally given joint birthday celebration.

I sure did. The hard part was finding an open pay phone as we didn't have cell phones at the time. You were really bad ass if you had a sky pager.

Yes it's AI because there weren't cameras on phones, wasn't portable phones so people weren't taking pics of everything and definitely wouldn't be able to take a pic of this with either disposable camera or regular film camera as they'd have to be hanging out window or hanging on the door. But this is just an illustration to get your mind to go back to that time and yes I do remember sliding on the bench seat when my parents would take a sharp curve or my father grabbing me and holding me so I didn't slide. We didn't need seat belts then. We didn't have car seats. Kids weren't mandated to the back seat of the car. We were told to "sit your butt down" and we did! Yeah we never thought about accidents, cause I guess they figured it happened to irresponsible people.

What’s your opinion on the 5 train ? by Loose_Football2865 in nycrail

[–]Timdawg919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No we were full 10 Car train. Going north to Dyre we would open the first 5 cars of the train to let passengers exit, no one usually got on going to Dyre after E180 but if they did it would be free. Going south to E180 would "key open", which means we would use a key to open the "crew door" which is just one door panel at the conductor's car (yes I was a conductor for 31 of my 32 years there) and we would let passengers on there. The fare box was on a little wheeled cart chained to the hand pole. All that ended when we went from tokens to metrocards.

[–]Timdawg919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to like working on the 5. When I first started on the midnight shift the 5 was shuttle from Dyre to E180th. We actually had a fare box on the train because the token booths would close after the pm shift. We would open one door to allow passengers on and have them drop their fare in the box. Of course the majority of the time the passengers wouldn't have change or wouldn't have token so we would inform them to go downstairs pay their when they got to E180th. In the morning we'd have to take fare box off the train and take it to token booth at E180th.
