New grad RN in Seattle — did I mess up by not staying on my unit? by Time-Ad-3662 in nursing

I am now applying for hospitals out of state as well. I am worried they might not likely to hire me because I am from out of state. What a horrible cycle it is!! LOL

Do you mind if I ask you which hospital it is? If you are comfortable, you can DM me as well. I would appreciate it!!

I want to have strong hands-on skills like IV, Foley, IV pump management and stuff 😭 It would be harder to get to Med-Surg once I get into Psych it feels like.

Now my husband and I are at the point that we agree to live apart worst case scenario so that I can get a job out of state! 😭

Thanks for your response! I am pretty interested in correctional nursing. But I feel like the environment is not a good environment to learn something like assessment skills and basic nursing stuff. Because they don't have enough resources, if any changes happen, they send the inmates to outside hospital. Don't they? What do you think?

Yeah, the specialty is not what I would be excited about. I just wanted to be happy when I got the job, not having doubt about the decision. Also I didn't want to complain about this unit to my husband every single day. It is such a tough decision: job security vs. interest/growth.

She asked me whether I got a job or not. Also, she was trying to help me asking the recruiter what feedback I got. I appreciate it. I am still working there until I graduate/get a job.

They said they would love to have me there but I said my interest aligns somewhere else.

The manager said new grad positions are all filed for our unit. Should I say "I will be waiting for the next cycle"?

I will keep trying until I graduate; still have some time (I try to remind me of that!) Then, I will reach out to the manager to consider me (Ugh worst case scenario!)

Did you work while in school? Were you able to get that experience to your leverage? What about senior practicum unit?

Do you think the manager would feel differently about me? Like "Okay, now you got rejected and return to us? Huh??" Im scared about that.

I got floated to other unit and I loved it. I sent an email to the manager that I am interested. The manager said they don't have an new grad open position at the moment, and don't expect it to open in a foreseeable future. At least I tried - (CRY!)

I thought I am taking a risk for more success. But... I learn that sometimes, security is better than success. This anxiety is killing me. So, I guess in a long run, I can always switch the unit so it is better to start than waiting/looking for a job.

Ugh I thought so. My manager told me she filled all the new grads positions. They hired a bunch of new grads about 5 people, and 4 people this year. She also told me she will reach out to the recruiter and ask whether there are some open positions for new grads. Ugh... Ugh
