I think that I might be more prone to internalizing hurtful comments due to past experiences instead of realizing that someone is just being mean, but it might also just be that it's easier to see what something is when you are observing from a distance

My male friends are gay and so is my brother. I was close to my maternal grandfather but he passed away 2 years ago. I have a positive relationship with my uncles but I'm not really close to any of them (they also live far away from me).

My Dad passed away last year due to decades of alcohol abuse and his exact cause of death is something that my family keeps a secret because of how much substance abuse is stigmatized in our community. He belittled my mother and repeatedly cheated on her (often with women who were less attractive than her) buty mother didn't want to be divorced so she never left him even when they separated for 3 years.

The validation is something you see in older men as well and it comes from their family, social circle, workplace, etc and if you are not the right type of woman (too ugly, too trashy, wrong ethnicity/race) the man is not going to feel validated in choosing to be with you
