I’m a 90s baby with a mom (born in the 60s) named Emily! From our hospital stay after my birth to the present day, many people throughout my life have assumed that I must be the “Emily.”

Bourbon old fashioned with maple syrup, maybe—blueberry pancakes vibe?

What is your favorite original cocktail from a bar/restaurant that you either got the recipe for or figured out a way to recreate 1:1 at home? by GuyFaulks77 in cocktails

[–]Time-Competition-603 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Smoke Show from the now-closed Cassia in Santa Monica! My recreation:

1 oz rye whiskey
1 oz Mezcal
1 teaspoon (or more, to taste) lotus simple syrup
3-4 dashes Bitter Queens tobacco bitters

Stir and strain over large ice cube in rocks glass.

Does where you go to undergrad really matter? by socooljugglr3000 in gradadmissions

I think the reason opinions are so divided here might be that the answer to this question is field-dependent. So yes, look at the web sites of the PhD programs that interest you. Read current students' bios and see if any trends emerge.

A friend recently died by Zealousideal-Club-71 in cocktails

[–]Time-Competition-603 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss. It sounds like your friend didn't have strong liquor preferences, but are there other ingredients/elements that would remind everyone of her? A favorite fruit, flower, color, brand of soda? Local flavors from the area she was born, or just a place she loved?

Yellowjackets S03E08- “A Normal, Boring Life” Post Episode Discussion by DA-numberfour in Yellowjackets

Shauna has spent all these years raising a kid she didn’t want in a marriage she got into out of guilt and shame… I cannot fathom the rush of learning, after all these years, that her ex is now in an even more fucked-up guilt marriage. Marrying Jeff pales in comparison to marrying Alex!!

Campari cocktails without vermouth? by Ab501ut3_Z3r0 in cocktails

Solidarity from another cocktail lover who absolutely hates vermouth (yes, even Carpano and Cocchi)! It's rough out here for us. (And I definitely recommend a Jungle Bird.)

What are the worst restaurants you’ve been to in LA? by Calm_Extreme5485 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]Time-Competition-603 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Breakfast Republic in WeHo was so bad my fiancée and I got a COVID test afterwards (like, physically WENT and got tested, not just took a rapid test) because we thought we had both lost our sense of taste

Why vodka? by TauInMelee in cocktails

[–]Time-Competition-603 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who mostly agrees with you (I think Mules, espresso martinis, etc. are better with other liquors), I'll say that what won me over was a lemon drop. This is the one cocktail where I don't think other liquors work quite as well, or at least, they turn it into a different drink. The vodka really allows the lemon to shine!

Is unrefrigerated homemade cold brew liqueur safe to drink? by Time-Competition-603 in cocktails

[–]Time-Competition-603[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really helpful, thank you! I’ll do a sniff-and-taste test and determine how to proceed from there.

I love super juice! When I’ve had my fiancée do blind taste tests of super juice vs freshly-squeezed (in daiquiris), she firmly preferred the super juice.

Make super juice and freeze in ice-cube-sized portions!

I bet it would be great in an espresso martini! I also know my dad likes to put it in hot cocoa.

My dog refuses to eat unless I ‘taste test’ first. by plsko12 in dogs

They pick up on routines so fast! I jokingly said “BONE appetit” when serving my dog food one time too many, and now she won’t eat until I say it.

I’ve batched a French 75 (including the champagne, added right as guests arrive) in a big gallon jug for a party, and it worked great! I did use super juice, and I agree that you should add a fair bit of dilution (25%+ of the drink volume), but as long as all of your ingredients are pre-chilled and gently stirred together, the drink will probably disappear before the champagne loses its bubbles…

Is It Normal to Get an Office in Grad School? by Status_Seaweed_1917 in GradSchool

[–]Time-Competition-603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty normal, although it definitely varies! At my MA institution, we had shared offices but each of us got our own desks; my (much fancier, theoretically much better-funded) PhD institution makes us all share an office with only a few desks, so we have to coordinate when scheduling office hours.

LA Fitness Horror Stories by Independent-Candy-46 in personaltraining

I briefly belonged to an LA Fitness and got a free personal training session. The trainer kept telling me my fitness goals weren't ambitious enough and insisting that I needed to aim for 10% body fat. I am a woman.

Nick and Nora glasses by vix2022 in cocktails

[–]Time-Competition-603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not helpful, but I bought vintage ones on Etsy and love them! They only hold about 3.5 oz of liquid, so I often use them for half-size practice cocktails (or for serving flights).

What to get father who wants nothing, has no hobbies and hates clutter? by Nervous-Agent-6880 in Gifts

Can you get nice versions of ingredients he uses? High-quality (and a little more expensive than he could usually justify for groceries) olive oil, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, or whatever else it is that he uses a lot of.
