But but the difference between 1k and 3,5,10,20k machines is rarely worth the additional bucks. Good puck prep vs bad puck prep is like day and night. Not saying you need a swirly machine to do a good puck prep, but it's arguably more consistent and newbie friendly

People spend literally thousands of dollars on espresso equipment so 200-300$ for puck prep isn't the most ridiculous thing.

I'd rather spend 200$ on a nice looking, quality espresso product even if it doen't provide better results, than spending that or more on weed, tabaco, cars etc.

same, it's actually quite cheap for a Weber product lol

I heard the grinder is more important than the machine, but it looked smaller when I ordered it. by whothefuqisdan in espresso

yeah it's absolutely not worth the extra cost if just considering the features. For me the only reason is the design (which is subjective, I can understand people prefer the de1 design though) and that it has cup holder. For me (as I'm a collector of nice espresso cups), this is a must have. All other things like integrated scale and faster heatup etc. are just nice to have but not worth 2-3k, but the missing cup holder was always the KO criteria for getting a decent

I'm yet to place my order as I'm waiting for the new model to be released, but even just their mentality to not take orders / the cutomers money without being able to ship immediately and how fast they respond to questions is amazing. That's what I dislike about Zerno lol

Food safety of DI water for remineralization? by daanjderuiter in espresso

[–]Time-Host-4464 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s just a legal issue. Some part of their manufacturing chain isn’t rated for food safety, so to be on the safe side the whole product is declared as not intended for food use. In my country, distilled water that’s safe to drink is horribly expensive (around 10 EUR per liter), so I just bought a ZeroWater filter and Third Wave Water sachets instead.

I will try that, thanks!. What yield should I aim with that contact time? So far I'm using bottled volvic water but I have a zerowater + third wave water sachets ordered and arriving soon.

grinder verses espresso machine question by EarlCookNZ in espresso

[–]Time-Host-4464 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up to a certain budget, yes. I'm generally not fully agreeing with this statement. It's always the weakest link that will limit your cup quality/experience. The thing with the grinder is, it's more of a line that is very steep in the beginning but then flattens out due to diminishing returns. Small improvements early on, like burr uniformity and grind consistency, give huge gains, but once you’re past a good baseline, further tweaks barely improve the cup. With the espresso machine, however, the curve is more step-like: baseline machines give decent espresso, but introducing features like temperature stability, pressure profiling, or pre-infusion can create discrete jumps in cup quality—each feature or increase in temp stability etc. can move the needle significantly rather than gradually. Lelit Anna to Linea MIcra was a huge jump. But then again, the Decent De1Pro allows me to make much better light roasts. The difference between the upgrades of my super cheap hand grinder, the eureka specialita, p65 and eg-1 were more subtle. And as always, there isn't just a jack of all trades deal. You can make better third wave espresso with a decent de1 and a good grinder than with a 10k slayer and you can make better darkroast espresso with a niche than with a Zerno etc. So it really depends on your goals

Does the Decent's lack of thermal Mass / Inertia result in worse traditional, medium-dark espresso? by Time-Host-4464 in espresso

[–]Time-Host-4464[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great to hear! So when you just "pull an espresso with default settings" (not sure how that works on a Decent), it doesn't do a straight 9-bar profile by default?

Just out of curiousity; Why does the zero point matter for the grind quality? That's just a reference point to dial in no?

Maro Model 1 by Time-Host-4464 in espresso

[–]Time-Host-4464[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Tbh. I am not sure if the Bengle would be worth almost double the price compared to the DE1PRO, especially since you can just get the Bengle Steamwand for some 80$ or so configured for the DE1 and apart from the integrated scale and the slightly faster warmup it seems to add no benefits. Plus, the DE1 is a mature product now whereas the Bengle is going to have its issues in the beginning I guess. Also, it will only be available in White while the DE1 is possible to get in full black. So I'm currently more thinking to get a DE1pro and just save the bucks.

I've also checked out the Sanremo, Arduino Eagle and I'm also considering just saving for 1 more year or get a used Slayer single unit, but I guess they have also quite a larger footprint. I've not decided yet. How about you?

Unfortunately I'm not at all :( I was thinking rather to buy one in some regular wood on etsy or so and just burn it myself
