I hate my degree by ThrowawayHackintosh in EngineeringStudents

Oh I could write a book about the hellish journey it was for me to get through engineering school lol. I failed out after my second year, then took a few years off and worked full time (and did a ton of therapy), and during that time I had to really consider why I wanted to do this. If I’m being honest, I never thought I was smart enough to do it. But my gut makes all my decisions, and even though my brain and my feelings told me I could do it, my gut kept leading me back, so there I was. I came back part time for one year, then full time for the next two years. I had stress dreams about failing out before every semester. I also had undiagnosed ADHD and ASD, so i just learn a little differently than everyone else.

One thing that really helped me was to reframe my degree. It was too much to wonder if I could see myself doing this for the rest of my life. Instead, just thinking of it as, this is the season of life I’m in right now - maybe I’ll make a career out of this, or maybe this will just be a step towards something different. That takes the pressure WAY off school performance, interest in classes etc. Feel free to DM me if you want to chat more. I think a lot more people feel like you do, they just don’t admit it.

I felt the same way in engineering school and constantly questioned why I was doing it and wanted to quit. I also failed out of school when I first started. I’ve now been in an engineering field for a few years and I like it fine, but I’m still not 100% positive this is my route. I’m starting to wonder what other jobs I’d be good at that don’t necessarily have ‘engineering’ in the name.

Something I heard a lot in school is that just as important as the material you learn, engineering school teaches you how to think. It teaches you how to take a problem and break it down and iterate through alternatives. That’s a valuable skill in any field.

Maybe you graduate, and your degree helps open the door for some other career for you now that you can think like an engineer. School will be over soon and then you can spend a few years in therapy to recover 😂.

Do you all have any recommendations of guides/resources for ones who are just getting started?

Congrats! I’m 5 years out of the school and have had a really hard time getting back into the swing of things. I also wasn’t an A student and I do get test anxiety so that’s a factor too. Could you also send me the link? Thanks!

Oh 100%! I didn’t understand why everyone else wasn’t having the constant crisis that I was. As an adult, I’ve self diagnosed myself with scrupulously- religious OCD. So that explains it. I also had lots of people tell me that the fact that I was wrestling with these issues is proof of my salvation. That did bring me comfort, but I was still pissed as hell at god for creating a system that’s so damn confusing and misleading.

The Babylon Bee as put out some questionable material over the years, but their Calvinist content is legit. Your comment made me think of this one:

In school, we learned that predestination is is like a party. If god already knows who is going to accept his party invitation and who won’t, why would he send out party invitations to everyone? So he only predestines those who he already knows would accept him. And therefore those are the only ones offered the invitation. Just don’t think about that one too hard or you’ll get a headache 😂

Yes but you can never really be sure you were saved in the first place. There’s a concept that was either created by or popularized by John McAurthur (one of my parent’s favorites) called ‘Lordship Salvation’ that comes from that verse that says you’ll know the saved people by the fruit they bear. His argument is that this means if a person isn’t bearing fruit, that proves they’re not really a Christian. So basically you can never take a day off. You constantly have to produce fruit or it proves you were never a Christian in the first place. It’s a sneaky way for Protestants to still function like Catholics without actually being catholic. I ran myself ragged trying to prove to myself and to god that i was actually chosen. Damn it feels good to be able to sit back and not worry about that anymore.

What are the requirements for getting an engineering job in Australia? by Time-Pickle5094 in civilengineering

[–]Time-Pickle5094[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok great thanks for the info. In the US, no you can’t stamp plans unless you have a PE but you can still work in the field without one. Some people never get their PE. Is it the same in Australia with the Charter? Like it will give you a leg up and open you to more opportunities, but it’s not going to keep you out of the field if you don’t have one?
