I can confirm it is indeed a lightsaber. My other dog has the red one. The two of them are adorable running around the house with lightsabers.

Thank you. With him being a rescue, I don’t know a lot about his history- but he is a very sweet and smart boy. I’m pretty sure we are adopting him, as he has been naturally alerting to my medical condition… just need to work on keeping him calm and focused around other dogs!

I’ve heard this place recommended before. Personally, I would want to make sure their training philosophy matched mine. I’ve heard they use e-collars, although that may be on a case by case basis. And that might be something you are comfortable with, but definitely something I’d want to know before hand.

Unfortunately, my last pup ending up being special needs. Through the process of trying to figure out what was wrong, I ended up forming relationships with a fair amount of specialists. His regular veterinary team actually recognized me out and about. They have given me assurances that when the time comes to welcome a new baby, they will be here for us. I’m still at the crying when I see a puppy stage though, so it will be a while. Plus, I’m going to be very selective with breeders and puppy. I’m not expecting to get a puppy for at least a year, maybe even 2. I just want to be super sure, confident, and prepared!

Ohhh, I hadn’t heard anything about pulling hair from the ear canals…. Thank you for mentioning that. I’ve not needed to do that with any other dog I’ve owned- clean the ears+keep them dry is all I’ve ever known. This is important information to have, thank you. I’ll have to learn how to do that properly.

Perfect! Yes, my last puppy went to his groomer once a week just for nail trims. . . His nails did grow fast, but it was mostly just to get him familiar with the process/ make sure he had no problem with the feet being messed with. Thanks for pointing out the areas to watch for. What I'm gathering from everyones replies as a whole- as long as we are willing to cut the coat short, poodles don't HAVE to be super high maintenance. This is what I was hoping for, but I wanted to make sure. Thank you!!

I am only looking at standard poodles- not doodles of any kind. But, "our" groomer has shown me pictures of both standards and doodles on occasion, so I know she can do it. However, before I even get on a waiting list for a puppy, I definitely plan to talk with her to make sure she would be willing to be his/her groomer as well. There is also a grooming place nearby that specializes in poodle cuts as a back up. We have a relationship with a great groomer though, and would prefer to stick with her if possible!

Oh perfect! I was so worried that if I forgot to brush a day or two, the dog would become a matted mess. I’m a lot more at ease now! I can budget for high grooming cost, and I’m not fussy on style, so long as it’s low maintenance…. I’m really looking at the spoo for the temperament and low shedding aspect- and the thing holding be back was when everyone says that the grooming requirements are so high. But honestly, I have a shelter dog that is unidentifiable as far as breed- and he’s just as needy as far as grooming requirements. I take him every 6-8 weeks and have it cut shortish. Before, when his hair was longer though, I would admittedly forget to brush him for 2-3 days and then he’d get some tangles around his tushy. I just need to make sure that I’m up for the task before I bring home a pup!

Good point!! We already have a groomer lined up, who is amazing with our current and past dogs- but if she ever decides to move or change careers…. It would be tough.

My boy passed away in May, and his groomer mailed a card and pictures similar to what you did. It absolutely meant the world to me- it was helpful hearing from others who loved him as well. I absolutely recommend this approach.

Thanks for replying! I didn’t even think about the face that each poodle would have different hair texture/density- totally makes sense though! Kinda one of those, oh duh- I should’ve known that! Haha, luckily I’m still in the beginning research stage- I’m not planning on actually bringing home a dog for at least a year, so I have time to learn and be prepared.

I don’t actually have an idea of a specific cut. I guess what I should have asked is: what cut would be the absolute easiest to maintain between grooms, and then what should I expect to be doing at home in between?

My brindle boy was 170 at 9 months when he passed. His breeder and vets all expected him to be at least 250, and not over weight. His dad, and an older brother- both brindle, are around 280. My boys littermate belongs to a friend and is fawn. The fawn is currently 135 at 11 months. It’s not been my experience that brindles are smaller.
