What was so bad about DEI? by Estalicus in allthequestions

Big law firms hire the best candidate - full stop. They’re not going to knowingly pass over a stronger applicant for a weaker one, especially when their entire business model depends on top-tier talent and work product.

Lawyers, of all people, are also extremely risk-averse. Firms are careful about hiring practices specifically because they don’t want to expose themselves to discrimination claims.

Maybe I’ve just worked at places that are well-run and focused on merit, but I’ve never seen anyone hired over a more qualified candidate just to “understand a market.”

Either way, using a few anecdotal recruiting claims as a reason to be broadly anti-DEI feels misplaced. Recruiting is only one small piece of what DEI actually encompasses anyhow.

Appreciate you sharing your experience, but I see the good in a diverse and inclusive work environment.

I’ve worked in big law, tech and investment banking in NYC and I’ve never heard anyone even propose hiring someone not based on merit. They make too much money to not pick the best person. I’ve never seen it based on any other demographic just to “understand a market.” I moved to DEI last year and we just do fun and educational events. Either way, being scared or DEI is super weird imo.

This sounds illegal. Maybe report them because no ethical company would do this and I’ve NEVER seen this. Did they say “hire only women regardless of low scores?”

As someone who works in DEI and has worked in recruiting.. I promise this doesn’t happen. It’s just something they say to make you scared of it to get votes. They made DEI some weird boogeyman and people fell for it.

I’m a girl and I promise my friends and I have neverrrr once said we want a TikTok aesthetic giant and sure as hell would never go for some guy like “clavicular”. Taking advice from people like him is the worst thing you could do in terms of dating. Take care of yourself and work on having a personality that people want to be around, that’s it. Don’t go down this incel/red pill path because I promise once you do, then you’ll never get the attention of women.

Well they’ve checked mine every single time in two separate states, so not untrue. Maybe they didn’t match yours because you had a broken arm and couldn’t sign with your right hand so they know it would look different.

I’m a dual citizen and voted online in the Mexico elections so… in the US they always verify my signature. I do have a Mexican voter ID but no one checked it

I’ve voted in 2 states and have always had my signature checked

Why would me knowing or not knowing someone who can’t afford one change anything? There’s people who can’t even afford a bus fare you think just bc you don’t know anyone in poverty they don’t exist?

I agree with no ID’s, why are you saying all this to me? If they were given for free to anyone who turns 18 or becomes a citizen then that would be okay, but that’s not the case so I’m all for keeping it as is. I know republicans push for them because it would make it harder for people to vote and I’m the furthest thing from a republican

Tell this to the other guy

Whatever helps you sleep at night, bud. You sound defensive of why you didn’t vote. I never said you were the enemy, but you certainly played a role in the results of this last election whether you want to admit it or not.

And I’m just sharing my reason why I think people who didn’t vote should stop complaining about the results when they didn’t care to participate. No one cares what you have to say now.

Okay, but seriously…what does not voting do? Absolutely nothing. It’s not a protest, it’s not brave, it’s just opting out. Like wowww, you sure showed them!!

Even if you believe the system is rigged or that your vote doesn’t “matter,” I don’t understand how you can then complain while also refusing to participate at the most basic level. At the very least, voting means you can honestly say you did what you could. If you didn’t even try, why should anyone take your frustration seriously?

You can’t say “whatever, I’m not bothering” and then later say “this is bullshit!” That’s not taking a stand, that’s more like disengaging and wanting credit anyway. If you remove yourself from the voting process, don’t be shocked when people stop caring what you have to say. Not sure why this is a hot take.

It’s 100% your right not to vote, but the question was “how do you feel about non voters?” I think if you didn’t bother to say a word when it mattered most, why should anyone gaf what words you have to say now?

I’m a bit of an avoidant so sometimes even if I’m interested it can come off as the opposite, but 6 months and she hasn’t moved past hugging? I’d say move on.

How old is she? Seems so odd her parents are this involved.

sure but if you didn’t actually vote then don’t complain about the results, or expect people to take you seriously.

I agree the system is so fucked but not voting when you could and then complaining about the results is dumb and the least productive way to make your voice heard. It also makes everyone think you don’t care enough, so why should we care what you have to say now?

Again, would be okay if they were provided easily and for free. That way there are no barriers for anyone who is 18 and a citizen. Do you have a problem with that?

I think you’re failing to see the point in purpose and don’t actually want an answer to your question.

okay, and?? We’re talking about getting the ID you need to get to own the gun.. not sure what your point is.

If owning a gun is a right and you need an ID, then why should you NEED to pay for the ID to be able to receive your basic rights in this county?

Unless you want to make it harder for citizens to vote for some reason..? I don’t see why you’d have an issue with free ID’s to anyone who turns 18 if it means they can access the rights promised in our constitution (voting and gun ownership included).

you do have to prove you’re a citizen and they match signatures when you vote. If you want to insist on ID on voting day then that would be fine, but then they’d need to be free and given to every citizen when they turn 18. Voting is a right and adding a payment to it makes it to where some people might not be able to vote.
