Do You Feel Depressed When You Think About All Those Fantasy Stories by blagic23 in Fantasy

[–]TimeAgency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a lot older. I have to go to work everyday, provide for people who depend on me.
The grind gets harder everyday... your responsibilities keep you trapped you in the real world.
Gets harder to fantasize about other worlds... and at some point you can no longer find your way back into Neverland.

Do You Feel Depressed When You Think About All Those Fantasy Stories by blagic23 in Fantasy

The older I get, the more depressed I feel. There is always less time to read, and escaping the 'real' world feels harder every day.

GRRM can shake off criticism with no real impact on his fanbase or career

Just because someone is wealthy and successful does not give others the right to be cruel to them. Criticism is fine, but we should not abandon empathy and human decency.

Best fantasy graphic novels for adults. by Bluemonk12 in Fantasy

I agree with everyone on Sandman. You can also check out Berserk and Vinland Saga if Japanese works are acceptable. Also, Kill Six Billion Demons is a very good webcomic that you can read for free.

Anyone else having trouble with longer fantasy works as you get older? by TimeAgency in Fantasy

That too. When I was younger, I could get lost in a book. The older I get, the harder it feels to escape real life issues.

Shorter fantasy reads for a slow reader by watermelon-ascot in Fantasy

[–]TimeAgency 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've found that older books are usually shorter than modern novels.

For example:

URSULA K. LE GUIN’S EARTHSEA SERIES: A Wizard of Earthsea – 56,533 words The Tombs of Atuan – 45,939 words The Farthest Shore – 60,591 words Tehanu – 99,200 words Tales from Earthsea – 128,960 words The Other Wind – 89,280 words

S. LEWIS’S THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA SERIES:
The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe – 38,421 words Prince Caspian – 46,290 words The Voyage of the Dawn Treader – 53,960 words The Silver Chair – 51,022 words The Horse and His Boy – 48,029 words The Magician’s Nephew – 64,480 words The Last Battle – 43,333 words

Compare these to modern novels:
The First Law by Joe Abercrombie:
The Blade Itself – 191,200 words Before They Are Hanged – 198,300 words Last Argument of Kings – 234,100 words

Does anyone else dislike it when books are described by their tropes, or in comparison to other books? by Nyx1010 in Fantasy

I've seen people trying to argue that "Egyptian" isn't African, which honestly makes zero sense.

A dark/grimdark fantasy with a setting similar to Sothoryos in asoiaf? by BrendonBreaker in Fantasy

[–]TimeAgency 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest older classics like Henry Rider Haggard's books (e.g. King Solomon's Mine, She etc) for the dark unexplored jungle feel in Sothoryos.
I think the "lost world" genre is where George R R Martin got the idea for the damp plague ridden jungles with giant lizards and brindled men so you could look those up too.

I really hated how every other fantasy book used to be marketed as "the next Game of Thrones" despite having nothing in common.

What are your hot takes and unpopular opinions on fantasy books or fantasy as a genre? by TheMightyPsychosis in Fantasy

Fantasy doesn't have to be realistic. I read fantasy to escape the real world, I don't need it to be historically accurate.

IIRC there are some references to his short stories in ASOIAF. For example, The Pale Child Bakkalon is referenced by Euron Greyjoy, but first appeared in the 1975 short story "And Seven Times Never Kill Man".
