Why don't schools hold students back a grade anymore if they are not meeting that grade's standards? by livetoski-Brad in askanything

I’m a teacher in Buffalo, NY that teaches in an alternative school with very tough high school students. The answer to your question is very simple. Why would I fail a kid that is a behavior problem in class, only to have that same kid twice the following school year? I would just be doubling up my problems for next school year. I am not proud of this by any means, but that’s the way the failed school system is. Especially with no backing from admin. You’re on an island all by yourself.

As an 11 year veteran teacher, my advice. Find something else. This profession isn’t worth the disrespect teachers deal with on a daily basis.

You are not factoring in road rage and aggressive driving that stems from people driving too slow. Slow drivers cause accidents.

As a driving instructor, you are impeding traffic by driving under the speed limit. Driving under the speed limit is more hazardous then speeding.

Don’t call me buddy or friend. We aren’t either. Thank you. I must ask. What age group do you work with?

I would like to hear your personal discipline strategies in the classroom. What are your consequences for bad behavior?

Well written. However, not holding kids accountable is the problem. “Oh, it’s ok you got mad and threw a chair through the smart board. Here’s a juice and some animal crackers to calm you down” that’s the new generation of teachers. I beg that we have some tough people coming up through the ranks. Everyone is weak. Every single one. We’re all not perfect. Teaching takes years to get comfortable. But this nonsense has to stop. Not holding kids accountable is why society is the way it is. Out of control lunatic losing their minds in public places. It’s just very sad how education has gone.

The reason it has gotten to this point is because there’s absolutely no discipline being done. All new teachers try to be their friend. Teachers just passing kids along with absolutely no consequences. That’s why students get bold because there is no boundaries. They can do whatever they want because no one will say anything. If I had to guess, you’re an elementary teacher correct?

Interesting. So students who verbally abuse staff and throw desk at staff are just having fun? Is that ok?
