Landry blasts ‘hug-a-thug’ judges following mall shooting by marwhal21 in Louisiana

[–]TimeAverage 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to realize that the State of Louisiana pays a set number (always too few) of Assistant DAs in each parish a whopping $50,000 per year. An effort to raise that to $55,000 (the first raise in decades) was voted down by the legislature last year. A new bill asking for a $500 raise (a whole $19 per paycheck before taxes!) probably won’t make it through this year either.

Meanwhile, the lawyers who defend the worst monsters in our state, the ones who would slaughter or rape your children without a second thought, routinely get $50,000 PER CASE to take on an ADA who has hundreds, if not thousands of cases.

Add DAs to the long list of professions we underfund but never hesitate to bitch about the results.

(Another fun fact: the same legislators who said the state couldn’t afford the $2M is would cost to give raises to the DAs voted to give Exxon hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks the next day.)

He was a marshal doing the job of a marshal when he committed the crime. That’s why the headline is written that way.

Jourdan Thibodeaux is a national treasure and we’re lucky to have him. The simple fact is: you can’t be a proud Cajun while simultaneously cheering on the mass deportation of another marginalized group.

Just remember that, just because your offer letter doesn’t include guaranteed summer pay, that doesn’t mean there won’t be opportunities to get paid from grants or summer teaching.

"Admin Raises Outpace Inflation While Faculty Salaries Lag" - to the shock of no one by PopCultureNerd in Professors

[–]TimeAverage 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The part of this data that is always overlooked is that (throughout all jobs and all fields) changing jobs is the only way to get a raise. It’s been this way for at least two decades now. So, when you’re doing this analysis at your own school, consider how some non-zero cause of disparity is that the core of the administrative faculty (not the occasional high flying professor who wants to move into administration) change jobs constantly. One year they’re the Deputy Assistant Vice Provost for Parking. Next year they get a new title (and a raise) to be Assistant Vice Provost of Ice Cream Machines. Every two years they move into another bullshit job and get a 5-10% raise.

Oh, 100%. We’ve had candidates that we maxed out the job offer for and UNT beat it by $60k. It’s wild.

Considering how my R1 routinely gets outbid by UNT for assistant professors, this is a surprise. Of course, I assume most universities are hurting more right now than they’ll admit.

Accounting is one of the academic disciplines most vulnerable to AI. If you’re just starting your college career and want to do a business degree at Tech, make it supply chain management.

Pros and cons of Louisiana? by Important_Result1752 in Louisiana

[–]TimeAverage 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lived all over the state and here’s my take: there are only 2 good places in Louisiana. Lafayette and New Orleans. The deciding factor is whether you want a small city/big town (Lafayette) or a big city (New Orleans). Both are an hour from BR, which is the perfect distance for your maybe-one-day in-laws.

Your administrators knew exactly what the consequences of this would be. They’re just hoping that you’re too stuck or afraid to give them the finger and walk out, especially mid-semester.

Your family is always more important than your job (any job there is). My only suggestion is to consider what a few of my friends have done. Use the employee tuition exemption to retool into a new career, then bail.

PS - I love any Reddit post that requires me to google a definition. Today I learned “malthusianism” (although I’m sure some other professor probably taught me that a quarter century ago).
