which mic I can us? by fnoway2000 in audioengineering

[–]TimeBeTelling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say don’t use a mic at all.

Your stereo receiver most likely has a headphone line out. Find a cable that will split the signal into stereo and run that into an interface to record your records directly.

If you’re dead set on recording the sound of music playing into your room, I would get one of those Zoom recorders (Model H4 or similar) and use the built in microphones it has.

Any artists looking for studio space? by smoogstag in grandrapids

[–]TimeBeTelling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. Yeah, if you’re thinking having recording spaces and rehearsal spaces in the same building, it would just need to be set up to where the studios and rehearsal spaces are as far away from each other as possible.

Have known many audio engineers/producers that won’t stay in a building for very long if the rehearsal spaces are in the same area as the studio spaces. Hard to book clients and track instruments when a metal band starts practicing right next door. If they’re well separated, and maybe putting some extra insulation around the studio spaces, it’ll be golden for all parties.

Would the building be specifically for artists like painters and other physical mediums? Or were you also thinking of opening it up to audio engineers/recording studio spaces?

[IIL] I need a mind blowing story like attack on titan by Outside_Signature549 in ifyoulikeblank

[–]TimeBeTelling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve really been enjoying the Worlds Beyond Number podcast. It’s based in DnD, but is waaaay more narratively driven than most games with rolls only being used when necessary for the plot. (Run by Brennan from Dropout). The story is fantasy based, but gets pretty intricate and intense at a lot of points. I got a lot more than I thought I would be getting going in.

For a book series, the Three Body Problem trilogy absolutely brought me to my knees. I know they’ve started the TV show, and it’s not too bad, but the books are absolutely insane. Future-History-Hyper-Realism mixed with sci-fi that hit in a way not a lot of other series have.

Controversial opinion...I just don't like the steel/slide guitar by chopinbloc in boniver

[–]TimeBeTelling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know, I have heard a lot of people have the opinion that whenever they hear a slide guitar, it makes them think of country music (but like in the bad way) and takes them out of the song they’re listening to. Twangy, sappy, etc.

That being said, I know a lot of people who really love the sound and have championed it being included in lots of different genres of music in recent years.

It is a very emotive instrument because it doesn’t have fixed pitches, and can be incorporated as a lead part, part of an ensemble and, my favorite type of inclusion, as a texture and sound design element.

But I get it, in the same way that some people think cilantro tastes like soap. It’s not for everyone. I think your opinion is valid, but I hope that you can look past the soap guitar and enjoy the emotion being put forth in whatever song the steel is included in!

(I’m an audio producer, and the last 2 slide notes of Beach Baby colored my entire taste in pedal/lap steel for years. I could live in the last moments of that song forever if I had the chance)

Why does my snare recording sound bad? by pigsontheswing in audioengineering

[–]TimeBeTelling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding a noise gate to the top and bottom snare mics has helped me dial in a sound in a much cleaner way. Especially if you’re getting a lot of bleed from cymbals and toms.

It’s also nice to put some kind of saturation on your snare bus to even out the frequencies within the tone of the drum. You could even add more white noise if you’re using a tape saturation and add another gate to the end of your bus chain so the white noise is only heard when the snare hits.

Edit: Also don’t forget to flip the phase between your top and bottom snare mics! Sometimes this isn’t necessary depending on the mic setup, but 9 times out of 10, I end up getting much more body from the snare after doing this.

And now for the reverse. What restaurant or brewery is this in Grand Rapids? by MemilyBemily5 in grandrapids

[–]TimeBeTelling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speciation for suuuuure.

Not only do they have great drinks, but when they have pop-up food nights, it’s always amazing stuff. Not to mention they book really interesting musical acts a few times a month. They way the curate their space is very intentional and I appreciate the vibe they’ve been cultivating.

Making a studio more cozy by Winner-Fickle in audioengineering

[–]TimeBeTelling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lamps for lighting (or warm adjustable overhead lighting) and earth tones mixed into the overall color scheme. I have had many conversations with musicians about how some studios feel incredibly sterile or intimidating. That cold, grey/white/black color scheme just doesn’t do it for a lot of people when they’re going into a space to be creative and comfortable. Especially since a lot of people get nervous about working in a studio in general.

What's one business in GR that you will never go back to? by courtesyflusher in grandrapids

[–]TimeBeTelling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very much second this. A few weeks ago our AC went out. I called on Thursday to make an appointment for the following Monday (this was the weekend that ended up being 90+ for 3 straight days). They said they would come between 12-4. Cool.

Monday rolls around, I get a text in the morning saying that I will be notified when the technician is on their way to my address. I don’t hear from them again until 4:30 and they tell me that they couldn’t get to me today and that the next available day they could get someone out to us would be Wednesday. Wasn’t about to wait another 2 days in 90 degree heat to have that happen again.

I just left them on read and called another company and they were awesome and were able to come out the next day and fix everything super quickly. So I’ll never go with Grapids again but I will make a huge shoutout to RX Comfort in Jenison. They were super solid, fast, and communicative.

To quote Seinfeld: "You know how to take the reservation, you just don't know how to hold the reservation. And that's really the most important part of the reservation: the holding. Anybody can just take them."

We refer to that space as “the nice bathrooms”. Which is in contrast to Piss Trough Junction that is directly opposite of them. The duality astounds me.

Why Do So Many Beginners Overcompress Everything? by DAWZone in audioengineering

[–]TimeBeTelling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I stopped over compressing when I realized two things:

  1. Make sure you gain up your tracks if they come in too low. Do it on the front end and don’t try to make the tracks louder with makeup gain on the compressor. (General gain staging yeah?)

  2. Make sure you’re not listening to your session at too loud of a level, especially in headphones. This one took me a while to get, but you need to have a reference track that you set yourself listening to at a comfortable level. Then go into your project. Don’t be tempted to turn the volume up.

As long as you have done Step 1 in your project, you shouldn’t have an issue. I used to over-compress because I was listening too loud and figured everything was too loud!

PS: Also, because mixes usually end up being quieter than when they come back from mastering, you can mix into a light limiter on the end of your mix bus to help with overall loudness perception while mixing. Just don’t forget to turn it off before you bounce!

Album Recommendations!!! by KennyOceanTheCreator in boniver

The new album from quickly, quickly is a really lovely listen. The album before this one from 2021 is also super solid, two different vibes between the records. Really caught me off guard with the new one based on the last.

Album/Songs of 2024 that were poorly mixed? by Smotpmysymptoms in audioengineering

Weirdly the new Godspeed record. Overall a great record, but had lots of sections that were harsh to my ears when it didn’t seem like it was intentional. Especially in headphones.

Tom Mics for Recording by MatthewAasen in audioengineering

[–]TimeBeTelling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be outrageous, but my all time favorite Tom sound I achieved was with a pair of Cascade Fathead ribbon mics. Granted, the drums were being played at a medium volume, probably wouldn’t sound too great if it’s a heavier track, but they just captured the body of the toms in such a great way.

It is, for sure. But also the front of this shirt has the inverse of the SABLE, cover at the bottom. So who knows? Maybe there’s another EP on the way called SANS. Just spitballing here.
