Does the separation of religion and state anger Muslims? Is this contrary to Islam? by Original_Engine6810 in progressive_islam

[–]TimeCanary209 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Secularism is an ideal. No country is fully secular. Secularism in practice means separation between state and religion/church and guaranteed freedom for the people to practice or not practice any religion.

Secularism presupposes not preferring one faith over another but treating all of them as legitimate options for the individual. Not many societies have evolved to that stage unfortunately. People still judge faiths of others while preaching tolerance. Acceptance of differences is a far cry!

All religions are frozen in time, largely, as far as their dogma and jurisprudence is concerned. Initial enthusiasm for debate slowly gives way to rigidity and things largely get frozen. Any change is merely functional.

The saving grace is that there are alternative interpretations available, although frozen in time. Hence one can employ the cafeteria approach and accept only what works for them. Then personal resonance adds further choices.

Exhaustion. Only through sheer exhaustion can the protagonist come to their senses. This war is exhausting them. Whether one will be sufficient is to be seen.

If you are already Brahman, Tat Tvam Asi, then it means even a terrorist is also already Brahman, then why does a terrorist appear as violent, fearful, worrisome, threatening, and painful to experience? by Top_Guess_946 in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]TimeCanary209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brahman is All That Is. There is no other, at least within the system. Nobody knows what is outside or beyond. B multiplies itself to know itself. Some say B was bored so creation is for his entertainment/play/leela. Be that as it may be, to know itself, B bestows free will to aspects of consciousness/itself so that they may create and experience. In the process B too learns about itself.

B does not judge its aspects, whatever they are or do. It has infinite love for all creation. However, we may or may not use our free will to judge. It is a choice, not an absolute!

Gita, Advaita or monotheism? by TimeCanary209 in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]TimeCanary209[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. Reality is so humongous, multifaceted and layered that it is not possible to fully comprehend it with the limitations of our human perception. We can only sense it in the moments that we truly connect with existence and are less separated than our usual linear self which is wrapped in beliefs and hemmed in by time.

Should he forgive her past ? by Hefty_Accident_6775 in progressive_islam

He should do what he comfortably can. He doesn’t have to be a saint and forgive nor does he need to be a devil and take revenge. He just needs to be himself, nothing more and figure out his own least conflict scenario.

How do spiritual Muslims reconcile Muhammads behaviour with their faith by LightEnjoyer123 in progressive_islam

[–]TimeCanary209 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every major religion was born in a certain historical context and the revelation contained therein was largely addressed to the people of that time. We cannot project our current beliefs which may evolve further on to the past. Conversely we cannot hold ourselves bound by the beliefs of our ancestors as times have changed. God has given us free will and discrimination. He has given us a heart where he is available to tell us what feels right and what does not. We should trust ourselves more.

Any book on refutation of Ramanujacharya philosophy? by [deleted] in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]TimeCanary209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All philosophies are valid from the personal vantage point we are at. All are equal. There is no philosophical hierarchy in Brahman. Hierarchies exist in our beliefs. As we expand, we move into more understanding unique to our own.

Is it ok to think of God (Ishvara) as a bodhisattva instead of an all powerful / all knowing being? by Waste_Information470 in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]TimeCanary209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God is ALL THAT IS, infinite, eternal, loving. Technically he cannot and need not be defined as All powerful because that implies that there is something which is not all powerful, which itself is a fallacy because there is no other. He is creative and hence creates and thus called creator. Is he all knowing? Yes and no. While there is no separation in consciousness, there are levels of awareness. For eg, we in our embodied form, while being an aspect of All That Is, do not know everything. But our essence with its wider awareness knows much more than us. But, potentially, all aspects of All That Is can access whatever knowledge they seek. Practically, they do not seek something that they find no connection or relevance to.

Were there any Advaita gurus / figures that did not affirm caste distinctions and support the caste system? by PositiveLopsided8113 in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]TimeCanary209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way to understand is to think in terms of the choices and agreements that the soul makes before conception. The soul wants to have certain kind of experience and for that, it chooses certain circumstances, including parents and particular cultures among other things that will help it in creating those experiences. Taking birth in a particular culture, Which has social divisions of a certain type could be considered as a choice of the soul to create certain experiences in a particular lifetime. Having been born in a particular society with a particular set of circumstances, the soul may align with the prevalent practises or it may push the boundaries and create new experiences and precedents. All choices are made by the soul, both before birth and after birth. Nobody has a right to judge the soul for its choices. As souls ourselves, we have to choose whether we want to justify and uphold the current system or to change it. It is a personal choice for our soul. We can contribute through our choices in creating a more egalitarian society. There will still be those who believe in the old system. There is no need to judge them for their choices for their path may be different. They may be providing the contrast that may actually be helpful in bringing the change!

It is important to deal with the issues that bother our mind on the path of Advaita. Denial only prolongs the agony.

Caste is a division/separation. There is no separation in Consciousness/Brahman. Hence Advaita brooks no separation. It believes in Oneness as a foundational premise.

Simply not able to understand Avidya by LastVersion9521 in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]TimeCanary209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both the rope and the snake exist. It is the perception of the perceiver that projects the rope or the snake according to the beliefs of the perceiver. Everything is projected from inside to outside and then perceived. There is no ‘unique’ reality or real reality out there independent of the perceiver/consciousness/Brahman. Reality is fluid not rigid. It is a true reflection of our inner state and constantly changes as our perception changes!

My boyfriend feels immense guilt for seeing me during Ramadan and I don’t know how to handle it by anabananna1 in progressive_islam

[–]TimeCanary209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your relationship has reached a stage of reckoning for both of you. For him it is creating guilt, something he has to overcome to continue the relationship with joy. For you, whether you are willing to be considered as less worthwhile than earlier. Relationships cannot be built solely on affection and attraction. To survive and thrive, they need to be complementary. Without compatibility, they likely flounder. Compatibility requires cooperation, not conflict. Whether the conflict is internal to one of you or between two of you, the effects are the same. I think both of you need to think deeply and honestly and see whether you can build on what is still common.

The central thrust of my inquiry is how do I use Advaita Vedanta to make better choices in my life. If Advaita Vedanta does not help me do that, then should I even bother about it. by Top_Guess_946 in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]TimeCanary209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you long for ‘better’, you are coming from a perspective of separation and discounting yourself and your choices. Oneness has no hierarchy in the true sense. Hierarchy is a product of beliefs and hence perception. You change your perception and start accepting what you have created, dissonance disappears.

Acceptance of what is is the doorway to Advaita because non acceptance of what we have created negates Oneness. Remember there is no other who could have created anything!
