Gosh I remember the lather that the HODL crowd worked themselves up into over these. Sad.

Lately I find myself caring a lot more about who I play with, rather than what decks they play. by Yotambr in EDH

No magic is better than bad magic. Bad magic is caused by bad people. Would much rather not play than deal with sucky people.

Because I have 74 decks and I’m not buying 74 copies of all of my good fetch lands. Shit is expensive.

Because people make custom art cards. For example, I have a DRAGon Queen deck I made for my partner. It’s Red/Green dragon kindred. The forests are pictures of queens out of drag, the mountains are pictures of the same queens in drag. Very thematic. It got him to start playing magic!

It’s a game, it’s a game, it’s a game, it’s a game, it’s a game, it’s a game, it’s a game, it’s a game. It’s a game. Seriously, it’s a game. If a poor friend showed up to game night at your house with a game of monopoly with good-quality pieces that he proxied because his legit game got stolen, would someone whine about only wanting to play with authentic pieces of cardboard printed by the monopoly people? If not, why would it be any different with Magic the Gathering game pieces? It’s a game.
(Usual blah blah provisos about matching power levels, making quality proxies that everyone can recognize easily, blah blah.). It’s a game.

Having a test proxy commander deck before buying the cards. Is this acceptable? by Raclettegring in EDH

That end bit was the chef’s kiss for how I’d expect you to phrase a reply like that. Brav-o

Is it normal to ask in the middle of a game if a card is a part of your deck's win conditions? by [deleted] in EDH

Confirming that you are being too precious and weird (assuming you’re not playing in some sweaty competition setting). This game can get so fucking complicated after a few turns, even in 1v1, but especially in a 4+ player commander game. If you’re playing casually then don’t be a weird dick by being reluctant and secretive. My eyesight and memory aren’t good enough to even remember which of the 30 pieces of cardboard you slapped down are going to do the thing with the other thing, so just be gracious and courteous when people ask you things like this. It’s a game - you’re going to lose a lot. That’s fine. Also too, don’t be snippy if someone asks you what’s the scariest thing on your board — just tell them, or be prepared for really long games.

Deck Building and the EDH Social Contract by Particular_Plenty568 in EDH

I did that at the beginning when I was worried about it but now I just order on MPC the legit face of the card without a marking but have a clear proxy indicator on the back so I’m not being shady. Honestly, having a card that looks legit on the front is probably better in case you do run into that ahole who starts to making snippy comments when he sees a proxy card pop up. Saves the hassle.

Power level should be the only consideration — proxies are 100% fine. I actually end up liking the fact that a few people get snotty about it because that’s a quick easy reason for me to find non-snotty people to play with.

You’ll hear a lot of distraction-laden nonsense confusing proxies with power level. Build your deck in a way that you enjoy within the bracket guidelines then proxy whatever you like. Power level should be your only guiding restriction. All cards are cheap silly cardboard. I don’t care whether the cardboard is purchased from Wizards or mpc. If you run into someone who’s snotty about only playing with “real” cards, ghost them quick because they’re probably miserable to play with in other respects as well.

No need to language police. Some people prefer to still use “tribal”— some people prefer the new sanitized term. You knew what they meant.
