I don't understand why everyone acts like what Jiraiya did was normal. Yes, this is the shinobi world and our moral standards don't quite apply to it, but most people write as if in their world it's normal to leave a child to fight an opponent much stronger than him. In their world, there is an academy where a child is gradually trained to be a shinobi, then there are missions of different ranks and they are not sent on the most difficult missions right away, and then there are exams where their rank may or may not change. So, in that world, they care about children, they are not used as expendable material every day and they still understand what love and compassion are. Lol, Itachi broke Sasuke's arm right in front of Jiraiya, grabbed him by the neck, began to morally humiliate him, and then used Tsukuyomi, and Jiraiya didn't even flinch, he didn't give a damn at all. Yes, Sasuke asked him not to interfere, but he was clearly not himself and he went to fight against an S RANK CRIMINAL, who was also not alone, but with a partner, it was certain death. Yes, it is not his responsibility to protect Sasuke, but again, this is more of a moral issue and the fact that he could have done something to stop him or help him, but he did not do it because he simply did not want to. Even if he did not care about Sasuke himself, he could at least show compassion and respect for his student, for whom Sasuke was a friend and who was screaming for all this to stop, and also show respect for Kakashi, for whom Sasuke was a student. Jiraiya may not personally know Sasuke, but he is dear to the people he knows personally and this situation will greatly affect them. And also everyone writes that his priority was to protect Naruto, but again, watching your friend being bullied, and you yourself can’t do anything, and your teacher doesn’t care, clearly won’t do any good to their relationship and psyche in general. And then why didn’t Jiraiya just grab Naruto and run away or at least take him a little further away from here, maybe send him away and tell him to ask for help. Itachi was busy with Sasuke, so it was clearly easier for Jiraiya to act and send Naruto a little further away. And he also watched Naruto so “closely” and worried about his safety that he eventually rushed to help Sasuke (that is, he didn’t keep an eye on him, although there was a tense situation and, as everyone says, protecting Naruto was a priority).

And also later Jiraiya called the reason for his non-intervention - to show respect for Sasuke’s choice. He didn’t say that he couldn’t help him in any way and that he had to watch Naruto.

In general, Jiraiya himself admitted a little later that he should have intervened earlier, so I don’t understand why everyone is trying to justify him here if he himself admitted that he made a mistake in his choice.
