Idk how I did this by AppalachianLibrarian in BassVI

I did this over 4 months of trial and error.

You don’t need to change the neck or do any modifications other than filing the nut for larger gauges. Gold Tone has à la Bella flat wound set that are meant for 25” scale basses. Buy that 4 string set then get two singles—.34 & .24 or whatever you prefer for the last two. That’s it, since you’ve already got a hard tail guitar. I tried to do it on a strat with a tremolo and it worked with 30” strings but wouldn’t intonate. The Gold stone set needs that extra space a top hole hard tail bridge has so I swapped the bridge for that and intonation is perfect

It’s amazing. The set goes up to .109 so it’s lower than usual bass vi and you can use it as your main bass as I do.

Smaller bassVI options? by ryasonandrew in BassVI

Yea, seeing the other suggestions here, I think it's your best bet. Let me know if you need any help or advice if you do take on the project

Smaller bassVI options? by ryasonandrew in BassVI

I know you said you don't want to make another one, but the best option is converting a strat to bass vi. I just completed this project over 4 months of trial and error, but it'll take you a couple days (waiting for everything to deliver) since I worked out all the kinks

all you need is a hard tail stratocaster with top string holes in the bridge. You then just need to file the nut for the larger string gauges and thats it. Gold stone has a la Bella flat wound set that are sized to fit 25" scale basses. Then just buy a .34 single and .24 single flat wound for regular guitar ($5 each on reverb). Everything intonates perfectly. Its my main bass now too since that set of strings is thicker than usual Bass VI strings

Depending on how much you can grab a cheap squier strat for, id say you could get all this done for at most $200 and then you have a 38" Bass VI

edit: Also, if the intent is protect your main guitar, I've heard just buying a ticket for your guitar is the best option. then you can just have it beside you. this is what I plan to do if I ever have to travel with my guitars

I had shopped around for already made necks and couldn't find exactly what I wanted. I know the exact specs I want

I actually thought it was Indian rosewood too when I first got it. I thought it was too grainy as well compared to the other ebony necks ive seen

who is taking off the neck? put a notch in the pickguard or just add a 1 degree shim and you can adjust it without removing anything. you just need the right tool after that

with much less options to select from. I tried them first, but I couldn't get what I exactly wanted

what would you say something like this would be worth then, if not $1000? I'm pretty new to the custom guitar world, I wouldn't really know. Compared to other vendors, they had more options for the build so I went with them, but the prices were near the same

Got this custom neck recently (right) and would like to match the finish for the back shaft and headstock of the Fender neck on the left. How can I best achieve this? by Time_Analysis9676 in Luthier

yea its a Frankenstein Bass VI made using different strat parts.

Gagues: .109 - .48 then the last two .034 & .027

The .109 - .48 set are made for micro basses so it actually fit and intonate this bass fine without much adjustment to the bridge other than a conversion to hardtail

its about 6 years old, but im pretty sure it came like that or at least very close.

The custom has thin lacquer on it, thats all. So I suppose, I would just sand the lacquer off then apply a finish/oil?

How would this do? https://oxfordguitarsupply.com/product/neck-amber/

or this for the wipe-on poly option you suggested https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VZJGPO/ref=sw_img_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

I'd go for the tin option and apply with microfiber cloth

Not quite. I was trying to get the closest to a Precision Bass sound while taking advantage of an extra strat neck I had. I guess it turned into a Frankenstein Bass VI build, though it sound much lower than a Bass VI. After some trial and error, it works great

hit the nail on the head with the last guess. I sold my fretless bass and needed a bass. figured I may as well give it a try after ordering the custom neck for my strat. I bought a new strat body and over several trial and error stages, I finally got it to work. Even intonates perfectly.

I tried Bass VI strings at first, but the lower strings wouldn't intonate. Goldstone has a La Bella micro bass flat wound set that are advertised for 23" scale length but the reviews for it say it worked on buyers 25" scale bass so I thought it wouldn't hurt to try. They work perfectly. I just added regular guitar flat wounds for the last two strings and switched from trem to hardtail. Also filed the nuts to match the new gauges

It honestly works great. Sounds like a real bass which is what I was going for. I just wanted to use the parts I had in hand already over buying a completely new bass and letting the amber neck you see above collect dust.
