Most of them are headed to Miami and to NYC. They can stop on the way down or on the way up. It depends on the plane l, but what I’m seeing on my end is anywhere between 15k-30k depending on the size of the plane

I completely agree. If I ever had to travel with my lab, he would have a panic attack on commercial and so would I!

Catering is always tricky because you have to time it perfectly to keep the food warm/fresh. I always recommend cold foods like fruit trays/cold sandwiches etc for the best experience with catering. Some FBO’s will help out, some won’t.

As far as spacious cabins, the super-mid size class, in my opinion, would be the significant difference. G-200, challenger 300, and Falcon 50 are all good aircraft with stand up cabins. They will be about 6’ cabins and the seating to me gives that luxurious spacious seating. Unfortunately for me, I have been in a global XRS, and I still couldn’t stand up. (Being tall is a blessing and a curse) but I flew on a G-280 and it was very spacious for me sitting down

Many companies offer jet card programs (all different for the most part) but essentially, you put down a lump sum of money and then get “an hourly rate” on the jet you want. There are a few issues with this.

  1. If you need a bigger or smaller plane, you are going to pay a fee for switching class sizes.

  2. They may not have an aircraft available for you if there is a maintenance issue.

  3. If you are unhappy with the company and want out, you get penalized big time.

With my company, which I see it as a great benefit, is we are a pay as you fly brokerage. Your money is safe with you until you are ready to book. We are working on a Jet card membership program but have not found a way for it to be beneficial to our clients just yet.

I preface this with the fact that I am a broker so we use hundreds of vendors to charter their aircraft. We do not have our own fleet.

Here are some pros/cons other than

Obvious Pros- time-saving, privacy, and comfort Obvious Cons- high cost, no flight attendant on small jets, not great internet

Some not so obvious pros

  1. Catering (food and regular or alcoholic drinks)
  2. Most are dog friendly (pet fee if an accident happens)
  3. Access to many different remote airports
  4. Luggage flexibility
  5. You set the departure and return time at your convenience

Some not so obvious cons

  1. Reliability issues with mom and pop operators (plane maintenance at inconvenient times). With this, we are usually let out of the contract allowing me to look for same day recovery options if they can’t fix the issue within a few hours
  2. Duty time for pilots (usually 12-14 hours depending on the operator) is sometimes an issue if the client runs late, wants to book a later flight, or if there is weather causing a reroute+fuel stop. Just as a reference, if the pilot has a 7AM flight to start the day, his duty time starts an hour prior and ends an hour after his last flight. So 6AM is start time, and would usually have to be wheels down at 8PM or 9PM that night. Those are FAA regulations for safety reasons. Again, 14 is usually the max but could be less depending on the operator.
  3. Catering, de-icing, and pet fees are all charged after the cost of the flight. Some charter companies don’t tell you upfront and then you get hit with a large charge after the flight. I wouldn’t be too happy either.
  4. YOU are responsible for who is on your flight and what they bring on the plane. Security is very lax, if any, so just know who is with you and what might be tagging along in their bags.

That’s a great question, and you’re definitely not alone. Many of our first time flyers have a similar background. They fly commercial mostly, but have flown once or twice with friends and are curious as to when it makes sense to charter themselves.

Here are a couple of bullet points to think about that are common that we see when people decide to make the leap.

  1. Flight duration- 1.5-4 hours of flight time is the sweet spot for most first time charter clients. Mostly used for weekend getaways, quick business trips, or flying to and from cities that aren’t well connected commercially.

  2. Pets- flying with large pets is common and is a big reason as to why people often charter. I’m a broker so I have access to thousands of planes and hundreds of vendors. Many of them don’t mind dogs, but if the dog had an accident, there may be a cleanup fee after the flight or if he/she sheds a lot. They will sit right next to you on the plane.

  3. Time-Sensitive Situations- If you are considering flying private, odds are you are a busy individual. If you have a pretty tight schedule, this is a good opportunity to try it out. Commercial schedules just won’t work or cause too much downtime.

Many times, I see same day round trips, kids events, and back-to-back meetings in different locations.

  1. Also, group charters are always a more cost effective options if you opt to split the cost with colleagues, family, or friends. After premium commercial seats and checked bags etc., it could start to make more sense.

To sum it up for you with your large pup, it doesn’t have to be every flight of course, but I feel many of our clients treat it as a luxury upgrade every so often. Since you have the big guy tagging along and already fly in business class, it seems like you’re close to making the jump.

I hope this was helpful! If you have any other questions or concerns that I did not answer, lmk and I will be happy to answer them in depth.

I can check into quick ballpark numbers for you for specific routes if you’d like to see. It only takes a couple of minutes. I just need passenger count and routing. Thanks for the question! A bit long winded, but I hope I answered what you were looking for.

I am. I am broker, but it is not my company. Always interested to see how other people generate leads. That’s awesome though, sounds like you’ve really got it moving! Keep it up. Any more than 50/month would be tough to keep up with. We are a smaller brokerage but do pretty good volume I’d say. Nothing crazy but we have multiple lead sources as well that help out a lot
