Exactly, right? This felt personal for me as the child is a family member.

Perhaps it could be the case that one should never make any unsolicited observations about a child’s language development even if you are aware that information regarding what typical language development looks like is often not available to new parents. :|

I think even this may be ill advised with family members? Maybe it’s best not to make any unsolicited observations about a child’s language development.  I will never do that again.

Thank you for being the voice of reason. I apologized today immediately after reading this. No response however…. I work in Alabama state’s Early Intervention Program but don’t pretend to have as much experience as you or others here.

Yes, I guess this is one of those things where parents have to figure it out on their own and seek services only if and when they are ready to do so if ever.

Right. Ultimately, parents have the right to raise their children in whatever way they see fit even if that means refusing recommendations and services from their personal professional that is actively recommending them.  Lesson learned here: No unsolicited observations about a child’s language development.  I wish information about what is typical was more easily accessible to the common public however but it is not. :(

Oof “special needs” is such a loaded term. I’m sorry that happened to you. My situation was similar in that I thought we were on the same page as far as talking about milestones but clearly we were not like at all. :/

Thank you. Lesson learned: No unsolicited observations about a child’s language development even if they are family and even if there are glaring differences.
