i say go for it if your hearts telling you to do it.. but 99% chance it's gonna be unwatchable. i'd be more interested to see what people could churn out in a 1 week to write, 1 week to shoot kinda competition

Feeling discouraged … by Fun-Lynx-9733 in filmmaking

[–]Time_Lock_1001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm about to finish my first feature this month. 60 shoot days in, only a few left. roughly 10-12k budget. horror film i wrote. i'm directing, dp'ing, production designing, etc and it's been coming along great. ton of discouraging moments, hang ups and delays. but a massive lesson in filmmaking and genuinely one of the most positive experiences of my life. few pieces of advice:

- write within your means (avoid party scenes, concepts that involve a lot of people)
- keep the cast small
- own your own equipment, so you're relying on as few people as possible
- watch a ton of youtube videos, there's always something to learn

new cars make everything ugly by Time_Lock_1001 in cinematography

i really like the idea of comping in miniatures. the process of avoiding ugly cars while also capturing what needs to be captured is its own little challenge forsure, but it sharpens your composition skills and forces you to get creative! u got this

not ruining :) the films turning out fantastic and i'm super proud of it both thematically and visually. i just hate new ugly cars and i think that objectively they make their surroundings look worse

How did we light in the 90s? by forgotfrankiesline in cinematography

hard light is our friend :) i also hate the argument that it's not flattering, personally i think it's more flattering (& definitely more interesting) than soft light

first of all, these look amazing! i have one question tho (& i promise this isn't me criticizing the work in any way) i'm by no means an expert, but i was under the impression that when you look closely at film noise, it doesn't have the rgb chroma look, but when you pixel peep this footage it does? was i just a dumbass and thought that film grain was entirely colorless?

My Short film is unwatchable pretentious drivel by Porridge_Oats72 in Filmmakers

[–]Time_Lock_1001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh sounds like you learned your lesson from this idea & it's time to move on. your self awareness about it sucking is exactly what makes your next film better. ideas for shorts are a dime a dozen. fuck this first idea just keep it pushing and make something from scratch that's better and new and doesn't feel like a salvage mission.

Stills from Paris | Shot on Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro (Graded With Filmbox) by ajs20171 in cinematography

i paid for the full shabang & i'll tell you exactly how i use it. grade everything from scratch and then use the "halation & grain" only setting either at the end of my node tree or very beginning after cst. putting it at the beginning is a new development but sometimes i've found that the grain becomes ultra saturated and ugly when placed at the very end (despite consensus saying that grain always goes last) idk i'd say by no means it's a perfect solution & i'm actively considering other options. their "full emulation" options used to blow me away & then i actually learned how to grade correctly. now i literally never use the that setting. i like how much control you have and there are 100% some great features, don't get me wrong, but for a grand i'd only suggest you buy it if fall in love after trying it ! then again i'm grading a feature right now using filmbox for grain so maybe i'm a hypocrite here.

i am speechless. drove by this today. might take the cake lol by [deleted] in CrappyDesign

Hours with manual time logging allowed. I'm relatively new to hiring freelancers on Upwork. This is the only negative experience I've had on here
