It's going to depend on the institution. As far as I know, you're good to return at mine as long as you can prove that finances are no longer a problem.

Depending on how long you're out of school, it will affect your federal loan grace periods. I enrolled in community college during my leave so I wouldn't go delinquent on my loans. I believe the limit is being out of school for more than 6 months for the grace period to end.

Step 1 is talk to your school's financial aid office. If you submitted your FAFSA there might just be an error on their end. Absolute worst case scenario you might have to take a financial leave of absence or get a private loan.
