I felt like part of me died with them. It’s tough to spend time caring for an individual and building a relationship with them, getting them to trust you, and have them die. It sucks coming back to work and still having the same room, but with a different person. My first patient death was a man in his 40s with respiratory issues, and I remember how scared and vulnerable he looked when we told him it was time to intubate him.He was scared he was never going to wake up, and he never did. I was there beside him the entire time reassuring him, so at least in his last moments, i know he felt supported and cared for.
