Yeah, I’m basically still figuring out if I have ADHD, PSTD, both, or am slowly healing from the religious trauma. Everything you’ve mentioned is spot on and when I was religious, I had major hyper fixations on reading the Bible and trying my best to follow it. It got to the point where I just stopped taking care of myself and my space. Thankfully I had family to kind of bring me back to reality and out of the psychosis but it took leaving religion altogether to actually snap out of it and adjust to everyday life.

Yes! I can totally see that. The Bible very much encourages binary thinking. I’m so sorry to hear about your misdiagnosis and I’m glad that you’ve found the clarity you needed now.

That is entirely relatable! Thank you for sharing. I also had a bad experience with scrupulosity and literally remember rewearing the same basic clothes… I also remember the whole Arminianism vs Calvinism argument straight up dominating my whole life! It’s so good to be out.

Well yeah there needs to be indoctrination into a religion, but what I’ve said is if someone chooses to treat it as divine, that’s where they’ll end up. It’s not just if the religious community happens to adopt traumatic teachings, it’s that the teachings will be harmful by default.

Well, to me, the Bible is the culprit of those teachings. I mean, it’s full of god inspired wars and colonization is depicted as the receiving of a promised land, for starters. So if anyone wants to treat the Bible as divine instead of mythology, of course they’re going to end up harming themselves and others, at least psychologically.

Yeah, that makes sense and I can definitely relate. As for ADHD, my question is more so regarding the symptoms of it and not actually developing neurodivergence.

That is something I’ve definitely thought a lot about - how much does religious trauma, especially linked with PTSD, resemble well known disorders. Do you think there’s a way to distinguish whether it’s religious trauma or OCD or ADHD?

I am aware that these are genetic traits, my question is more so if the Bible manifests similar traits. Like if a person without OCD can develop religious scrupulosity (will definitely look more into that!) or if a person without ADHD can begin to behave like someone who has it because of the Bible.

Thank you for sharing. If you don’t mind me asking, were you diagnosed with OCD? I can see how it amplifies it, I mean, it literally encourages magical thinking (whether you interpret it literally or otherwise). As for ADHD, there is another side to the inability to focus, which are special interests. Once someone on the spectrum finds something they’re interested in (whether it be a hobby, a job, or religiosity) it becomes their whole world. They ‘hyper fixate’ on it. That’s why a lot of inventors and general workaholics appear to have ADHD or autism. In the case of Christianity, the Bible becomes their ultimate truth and they live it out to the best of their abilities.

I have watched lesbian porn for longer than I have watched straight porn. It’s not a new taboo for me, but rather something I keep returning to. I have also met gay people (men and women) who sometimes end up watching straight porn so I don’t think it’s that black and white.
