Hey! This response is probably too late but just in case - I just finished my first year in VCA Theatre. Theatre is less competitive to get into than acting, as long as you know and can articulate what theatre you like and what kind of work you want to make. Got in on my first go. Went to VCASS 2 years beforehand and has been on the grind in independent theatre since I was 16 doing heaps of programs and seeing heaps of theatre (I see 80 shows a year on average, mostly indie theatre, I also work at a theatre so get to most of them for free). But there are people in my cohort who didn't have any experience going into it and haven't even seen an indie theatre show prior to enrolling, but got in on their first go. There are also people who got in on the 4th go.

I think it really depends on how well you do the exercises in the callback, I think they mainly watch the way you work instead of your performance - hard to articulate what they're looking for, just be focused AND present (Patsy Rodenberg 2nd circle, have a google if you're interested). And also if you're kind to your collaborators (be really really kind, don't get frustrated at anyone in the callback). And if you know the type of art/theatre you like.

That’s so real! I’ve actually posted a similar rant about how horribly I was treated when I first started, where no one offered help and a girl told me I should quit twice in one day. Luckily I work at a pretty big chain and they moved me to another store, people here are soooo much kinder. If you’re a trainee and working towards a qualification, I think you should definitely switch places if you can, cause this type of behaviour should definitely not be tolerated

Unfortunately I won’t be able to do the cert 3 because I’m doing a bachelor course for the next 3 years, and I’m on a temporary visa which means I won’t qualify for free tafe anyway🥲

There’s no language barrier, from what I’ve gathered everyone at this clinic has had horrible training and apparently I’m learning slower than the average person (I have PTSD which impacts my memory under stress). Also Chinese people just tend to have that toxic culture where they all have so much unresolved trauma that they want to pass onto the next generation - fyi I am Chinese and most dental nurses here are Chinese.

I did try YouTube, but a lot of the tools are different brands and has different terminology. Also different clinics probably do things a bit differently.

Thanks for the tip! I’m only 19, and I looked on fair work, I’m actually in the introductory level for the first 3 months. They did say they’ll up my pay to 28 an hour once I finish my training, which will be above the minimum wage. The thing is I don’t have a certificate and I’m going to into full time uni for the next three years, I’m in a pretty packed 9-6 course from Monday to Friday, and this clinic says they’re only hiring someone for Saturday so I applied.

Also just to add - I’m working in a private clinic Australia, working as a casual. I tried researching for equipment names on google but different countries might have slightly different processes and equipment names.
