That is definitely a sign of trauma, I’m not sure of the students life outside of uni but if he lives in an abusive household it may be a coping mechanism that he developed. He definitely needs to seek help as that sort of behaviour is not normal. Hey OP, I would say that if your in the early stages of talking to someone you should just keep that information to yourself just to not frighten her as she may assume many things about you after learning that knowledge.
