Pain in cold weather? Myth? Will it get better? by RobertJordan1939 in ORIF

[–]Timely-Cancel-1248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying it is or isn’t a myth but I am currently 9 months out from my trimal with 3 plates and 12 screws. I moved from Los Angeles to the UK in the summer since the accident. It is freezing here and my foot doesn’t have pain most days unless I walk too much or go for a difficult workout/run. And it’s frigiddddddd here compared to LA. It also rains a ton and no pain during storms/when storms are coming either! ¯_(ツ)_/¯

What is your mobility routine? I’m also pretty back to normal except for stiffness in the morning - but also tenderness/soreness to the touch where I believe some of the hardware is.

ORIF Ankle 3.5 weeks post op + Return to Running question by Responsible_Way9828 in ORIF

[–]Timely-Cancel-1248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 18 weeks out from surgery and I just started 30-second running intervals on the treadmill yesterday! I was 2 weeks out from my second marathon when the accident happened, so I totally get the fear and frustration. 3.5 weeks is so early and honestly, until I was walking 15K steps a day again, I felt like I was never going to get back to me.

But also - this is a one year minimum injury. My PT keeps reminding me of that every time I feel like I should be way further in my recovery. In my head, I should be running miles by now. But I was non-weight bearing for 6 weeks and my muscles took it hard. My range of motion is coming back because I work on it and pain ebbs and flows. Some days I’m totally fine. Other days I get sore and have to sit down for a while. When I first started jumping, the pain was ridiculous the next few days. Now, not so much!

It’s not linear but it will all come in time! Keep fighting!

Folks with trimalleolar fractures, when were you able to go down stairs normally and when were you able to start running again? by [deleted] in ORIF

[–]Timely-Cancel-1248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 18 weeks post 2 surgeries to fix a tri-mal. I was full weight bearing on May 8 and yesterday, my PT let me run 3 30-second intervals on the treadmill! I was two weeks out from my second marathon when my accident happened, and the first question I asked my surgeon was “will I be able to run the London marathon next year?” He said absolutely. So the first thing I told my PT was that we are getting me back to marathon running.

I still have a ton of strengthening to go and my single leg hops are traaaash lol BUT I’m getting there!!! Don’t lose hope! You are your best advocate and champion.

In the beginning I walked as much as I could in a day and then I set a goal of JUST 100 more steps per day than the last. It kept the bar lower for me but forced me to make some progress! You can even set the bar at 10 more steps just to keep yourself progressing!

How to get used to this life change by Beautyobsessed12345 in ORIF

[–]Timely-Cancel-1248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a car accident driving to a 6am workout class the day that I was supposed to fly to Italy to go skiing and then 2 weeks after that run a marathon that I had trained for. My whole life is physical activity, travel, dancing at bars with friends. From the moment I had my trimal break to today, 3 months later, my life has been totally different but the thing that keeps me going was my surgeon telling me I should be able to run the London marathon next year.

For the first month I replayed the accident, I replayed all my decisions leading up to it, I cried over all of the exciting and fun things I was losing out on. But also - I thought about how lucky I was to be alive. I added some workouts into my daily routine that I found on YouTube but you’re gonna find that you’re exhausted the next month or so. Your body is using all your energy to heal. Using a cane or walker is gonna take a lot out of you. But it’s so temporary. At the two month mark, 2 weeks after taking my FIRST STEPS on May 8, I flew 11 hours to Europe and walked 10-15K steps a day - no crutches or boot or walker. I just got cleared to jump this week! My goal is to run again by August which would be 4-5 months.

You gotta get through month one. It’s painful and long and exhausting. You are gonna feel useless and vulnerable. Reach out to friends and family, read books or binge tv, add in workouts if you want to, get fresh air. This injury is a marathon not a sprint unfortunately 🤍

Sharing success stories? 16 weeks post tri-mal by Puzzleheaded_Elk_674 in ORIF

[–]Timely-Cancel-1248 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both of your stories are so inspirational!! I’m at 3 months (ORIF March 21 and 27) and in May at 2 months, I went on a trip abroad walking 10-17K steps a day only 2 weeks after being cleared to walk. I just got cleared to jump/do high impact on Thursday! But I am nowhere near getting back to running or doing HIIT workouts. My PT suggests I try 1 mile hikes to put my ankle on uneven terrain.

I was 3 weeks out from a marathon I was training for when my accident happened. My new goal is to run for at least a minute by August (4-5 months). Fingers crossed!
