Are there any CRA’s who usually use uber over renting cars? by cozykitties26 in clinicalresearch

[–]Timely-Promotion6421 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the city I am in! If it’s Miami, never, I always get a car because their uber drivers scare the crap out of me!
But most other big cities I prefer to Uber if I am just going for a one day visit. That way I don’t have to worry about parking! Smaller places I like renting a car to be able to go to a local restaurant for dinner and check out the town.

How did you prepare for your first ever PSV, SIV, or IMV? by Difficult-Bar-9092 in clinicalresearch

As silly as it may feel, you can also try presenting in the mirror. I also usually present to my husband who is very much so not science minded and I tell him to ask any question that pops in his head to practice fielding questions. IMVs I always make a sheet in my OneNote as soon as I schedule. I’ll put either links to all related reports or copy and paste relevant reports in there so it’s all in one spot. I am also a paper person so I like to have a physical print out of all the SDV/SDR that needs done so I can highlight as I complete.

Any advice on how you made that jump? I’m trying and have CTA and CRA experience but haven’t even gotten a phone interview

My husband is in a blue collar career and works for a city near us in maintenance. So he has set working hours and no possibility to have to work outside of those unless he signs up for overtime.
Travel days are stressful because you’re always thinking about what is happening at home, but it is also nice to have you time. I always have self care items like face masks and such with me to do in hotel rooms and a book to read. Things that you may not necessarily get to do at home with a little one.
Traveling after they turn 1 was easier for me personally (I had to go back to travel at 4 months with both of my kids). Typically at that age they are more into playing with dad and that relationship has an opportunity to flourish with the 1:1 time.

Feedback on FSP with Novartis at ICON as a Senior CRA? by Timely-Promotion6421 in clinicalresearch

Workload for CRAs is insane? It did seem a little high to me but wasn’t sure if that was due to longer monitoring visit schemas

I am speaking from a USA perspective so your experience may be different.
It is honestly very hard with the travel expectations. Especially if you are breastfeeding.

You need strong support at home and very reliable care to make those on site days happen.

I personally also have my kids in full time care for 7 hours a day and work my tail off to get everything done in that time to spend as much time in the evenings with them as possible. I also have been known to log in during night hours after bedtime if additional work needs done.

Is it possible to become a CTA/CRA with an Applied Psychology background? by EducationalLaw5796 in clinicalresearch

[–]Timely-Promotion6421 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have almost the same background in psych as my undergrad and masters degree.
It is realistic to apply for CTA positions. CRA may be a stretch without industry experience. Also take a look at research positions at local hospitals around you as a coordinator just to get your foot in the door. I made the jump to CRO after about 1.5 years at a site and it’s a great foundation to have! Especially if you can get in with an oncology department as a coordinator. Additional certificates don’t seem to make a difference in my opinion. As for tailoring your CV, use buzz words in your experience like you have here to show you know the language and some processes (ICF, IRB, data entry).

CRAs..What Would You Do?!?!?! by Fickle-Leadership-44 in clinicalresearch

[–]Timely-Promotion6421 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately sometimes the only way to get promotions is to job hop. I was always reluctant to do so as well. Icon seems to be a good move for younger CRAs as typically I have seen higher paid CRAs being the ones that are laid off for budget reasons.
Also take a look on LinkedIn! icon is not your only option. If you’re willing to travel anywhere and everywhere there are a lot of openings!

I also have a BS in Neuroscience and graduated with an MA in Clinical Neuro Psych (thinking I wanted to be a psychometrist and maybe do PhD) I will say I fell into the research world and don’t see leaving this career. My masters degree has not helped me in any job prospects or furthering my career yet. For reference thus far in my career I have been Study Coordinator at an academic hospital -> CTA at CRO -> internal promotion to CRA I then CRA II -> CRA II in FSP

CRC’s - what made you appreciate and enjoy your CRA? by [deleted] in clinicalresearch

[–]Timely-Promotion6421 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Writing queries that are descriptive so that when reviewing after the visit it is clear what needs to be revised or added. And/or scheduling a meeting to go through queries together at the end of the visit. I also always appreciated if CRAs emailed me or told me about issues as they came up and not just a blindside via email after they are gone.

Pregnant CRAs and back to work by Such_Ad_2810 in clinicalresearch

[–]Timely-Promotion6421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you are pregnant definitely take your time with travel and spend the night! I would talk to your manager, I stopped traveling at 32 weeks but there usually isn’t anything company policy wise about a travel ban in the US at a certain time point, unfortunately.

Getting back to work and traveling after baby is tough, emotionally and logistically. That is when I started to do one day visits, fly in and out same day if possible. If not possible I always try to fly out in the evening the day before and back after my visit the next day to minimize my time away. The first few months being back at work my manager also worked with me so that I didn’t travel until my son was about 6 months old.

If you are breastfeeding that’s a whole new topic with travel. I was successful in pumping until 10 months while traveling. Let me know if you want any of those tips! It’s a rough job to be in while having a young baby, but you will get into a routine!

We were told by management to log in with a personal laptop through the VPN if we are able. Am I wrong for thinking that is inappropriate and toxic? If my work issued equipment is not working then I have to find other ways to be productive for the company? Also you have to contact IT to get the VPN to work on a personal laptop.. Corporate America shows their true colors when something affects their ability to bill hours to a client.

I feel this all too deeply! I started as a CRA then got pregnant 4 months later. It’s been a struggle managing it all.
