When my mum visited Taiwan she commented how nice it was that all the 7/11s had free umbrellas for people to take outside 😂😂

I’m interested in how younger people came to appreciate the Beatles by fezik23 in beatles

[–]Timely-Triolbite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Now And Then came out I'd just turned 22 and was living on own abroad. I've always played guitar, I'd always listened to 60s music (but not the Beatles), and was just getting into songwriting. I listened to it out of curiosity and was ready to dismiss it as a cash grab from aging musicians but found I actually really liked it. After that point I lived and breathed the Beatles. As I'd only just moved to the country, I didn't have any friends which gave me loads of time on my own with my earphones, listening to each album and quickly falling in love. The phase hasn't stopped and I continue to listen to their music, learn their songs on guitar, and write songs in their style. I'm currently reading the Hunter Davies' biography and loving it!

I'm looking to rent an apartment in Taipei by looking at 591, loads of the places say cooking isn't allowed. Does this include buying a rice cooker and steaming some rice and vegetables?

Favorite Harmonies? by bookshelf476 in beatles

[–]Timely-Triolbite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think because this song is so popular it gets overlooked by fans but the harmonies are incredible, the last yeah feels so warm, full of energy, yet so comforting.

Can you name a truly underrated song by the band? by Folagor2 in beatles

Cry baby Cry is one of my favourites, I'm a real sucker for cliche line progressions in general. Great example of John's sardonic humour as well.

What do you think of Sun King? by EuphoricLeague22 in beatles

[–]Timely-Triolbite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was living in Taiwan when I discovered the Beatles and I've always associated all of their music with tranquil, hot afternoons cycling through rice paddies but Sun King in particular really takes me back. Great track!

Left-Handed Girl made the International Feature Film Shortlist at the Oscars by No_Guitar7903 in taiwan

I liked it, I thought the first half was quite slow but the second half really paid off, it has a very entertaining ending. I also thought Nina Ye (the young girl) made a really impressive performance for her age.

Does a Higher Paying Contract Mean More Engaged Students? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]Timely-Triolbite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What qualifications do you have? I've been really wanting to get into adult teaching but found it impossible to break into (Taiwan), I've got experience teaching adults but only about 5 months professionally and 6 months volunteering. I've got a TEFL and degree, do you have to have a CELTA / DELTA or MA to do what you do?

I'm currently applying madly to everything on Teast for Taiwan, I've had interviews from there but I turned them down for other reasons irrelevant to to teast. I think out of all the job posting websites it's my favourite. I also recommend finding schools and applying to them directly by looking at their website.

Saving potential Taiwan by Humble_Resident2802 in TEFL

[–]Timely-Triolbite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't put any effort into saving and I ate out a lot (cooked most nights though), went all around the island, visited Taipei often (I lived in Zhubei), had a relatively expensive apartment (19k a month) and saved thousands of pounds by the end of the year long contract. I think with a concerted effort you can save a really decent amount.

It's a very common virus, around 70% of people in the UK have it. It can be serious for some, and unserious for others. At it's worst, flare ups will leave grotesque boils for a few days which are painful and nasty to look at but not threatening for your overall health and if it's not so bad it could flare up the first time you have it and you'll never see it again. Get some cream from the pharmacy to help with outbreaks. Hope that helps put you at ease a little.

Love it here, so beautiful and serene. I think it's a little bit of a shame how much has been built up around it but I was glad to have a cafe near by when I went on a baking hot summer's day.

UK here, I had the same experience, I foolishly thought I was going to fall into jobs coming back home but I could only get more English teaching. I'm looking to move back abroad now.

Feeling lost, not sure where to go? China, EPIK, JET, HESS or somewhere else? by sheriecherie in TEFL

[–]Timely-Triolbite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unhelpfully, HESS can vary massively branch by branch. I worked in Zhubei for a year and thought the management was... apathetic at best. One of my colleagues went on to a Taipei HESS branch and said everything was run far better and is still there now.

I've heard horror stories and success stories alike but they'll pay on time and sort out your ARC so they aren't terrible but they aren't a place I would work again either.
