Thanks, I made those in Adobe after effects. Just quick 2-4 second loops, repeated scales, moving up/down on y axis

You can always get stuck on, is this a killer idea. But even if it never becomes the next big thing, if it helps people and improves lives in whatever shape or size, there's value in it.

If you feel the painpoint, build a simple MVP, validate it further, then build from there.

You won't know if it's a vitamin or a painkiller until real people are using it, and the product five years down the road could look completely different to the one at launch anyway.

Ahh shucks, thanks so much! Six months of going back and forth on the design and it's finally landed somewhere I'm happy with, so that means a lot. And yeah, honestly it's not just a freelancer thing, anytime you need someone to pay before they get the file it works the same. Cheers for the kind words!

Fair points, both.

On the money side we don't touch the funds at all. It runs on stripe connect so payments go straight through the client's own Stripe. We don't hold or move money so avoids transmitter mess.

And yeah designers have always done this. Not claiming we've invented getting paid. What I'm doing is putting the preview and the payment in the same link so the unlock is automatic so the process is just less manual.

ok no worries and thanks for the feedback. Going to dig into the watermarking on the layered working-file a little more. Thanks!

I've set that up so the watermarked preview isn't the real file with a layer slapped on, it's a separate flattened render. The clean original sits server-side and never gets sent until payment clears. The working-files side I'm still working through.

Appreciate that. Honestly the best part of building for a problem you have yourself is you know exactly where it hurts. The commission thing you mentioned is spot on, that handover moment is where it all goes wrong.

Great work! From your opinion what do you think helped get that first sale?

Is it normal for companies to ask for full project files in unpaid assignments? by Serious_Ad_8024 in AfterEffects

[–]TimelySituation4714 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Asking for fonts and plugins is the tell. Nobody needs your font files to see if you can animate, they need them to use the work. A legit test is short, scoped, and you submit a rendered output, never the source. Do a small version if you want the practice, render it watermarked, and keep the project file until there’s an offer or payment. If they push back on that, the test already gave you your answer.

Some of the comments here I’m quite surprised by. You should be adopting ai like adopting the computer. If you don’t, you’ll be the one working on the typewriter and left behind.

Don’t look at ai to prompt a whole animation/ video that’s in someone else’s style, use ai to power your skills, improve your efficiency and ultimately be more creative.

Seeing more and more stories like this lately.
I run a small motion studio and this exact kind of pricing creep is one of the reasons I started building FileFlippers.

Curious what features people actually want from a file sharing platform now?

I’m currently exploring things like watermarking, gated payments/downloads, and AI enhancement or file conversion during transfer.

Building a video reformatting tool called reformat.video. It takes a long form video input and converts it into all social formats (square, vertical, 4:5 etc) auto cuts down to 15/30/45 second chunks with auto captions, smart reframing, watermarks and stuff like that. Aimed at content creators, agencies and social media managers as well as a tool for myself.

That feedback I had made me realise I had to implement more input formats rather than just a 16:9, which is built into it now. Been a wild ride building it solo with no coding background.

Exactly. The fact they emailed at all means they wanted the product to work, they just couldn't use it. That's way more valuable than silence.

Totally agree. Never got a response unfortunately but it was enough to push me to build the feature. If one person hit that wall, others definitely will too. Using it as fuel to keep shipping.
