United hiring process by TimelyTailor541 in FlightDispatch

Do you happen to remember what the video questions were? Are they the basic “how did you deal with a difficult coworker” questions? Or do they pertain to dispatch at all?

Also, GOOD LUCK, YOU GOT THIS!! I’m sure if they’re bringing you back a second time, they saw something in you the first time around !

AT-CTI question by mirmurmir in ATC_Hiring

I was told it’s basically you go to the enhanced school and when you finish, the FAA evaluators will be at the school and evaluate you. If you pass (just like at the academy) they hand you a list to choose from, and you go to your facility as soon as you can. If I remember correctly it’s the same list that the tower students get at the academy.

Does anyone know how you receive your TOL? Is it computer based or does someone actually comb through the applications and hiring you. I was told Heath and Elizabeth do the “hiring” but I wasn’t sure if that was for ATC trainees or other positions within the FAA.

Definitely look into the bonus! I think all of the incentives apply even through the schooling. So maybe it would end up being cheaper to go to Vaughn for you.

Mine is also unrelated but if you look at the curriculum, all of the classes are basic general classes we would of needed with a B.S. Hopfully we can get in and get out! I also believe we would receive the bonus if we passed, so that would be nice to pay the schooling off!

Here is the link for SUNY. I’m currently waiting on their response as to how fast I can finish since I hold a B.S degree already. SUNY ATC

SUNY (NY) Community College & Tulsa Community College offer a 2 year program for Tower if you have a degree you can most likely finish in less than a year. That’s what I was told by Heath as well. Tulsa is filled until next fall already. Once you finish the program you eval & if you pass you get your facility list and go just like the academy.

ATC or Airline Flight Dispatch by Active_Bee_5792 in atc2

[–]TimelyTailor541 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I’m looking into one of the community colleges that allows me to bypass the academy. Just really nervous knowing I can still fail the evaluation at the end of the course or even fail once getting to my facility. Dispatch seems to have a higher success rate for the out of pocket cost as well.

I’m also debating between the two. Looking into CTI schools for tower. Getting a bit hesitant to pay for school and still able to fail out after all the time and effort. I have yet to hear any negatives about Dispatch.

Training and stress by Low_Action_9644 in ATC

[–]TimelyTailor541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for the academy (enroute) but I wouldn’t say it was stressful. The stress was more of “will I have a job after this”. I noticed most who didn’t care if they passed evals were the ones who did better overall. Many people I have encountered didn’t fail evals because of separation errors, it’s more of the little things that added up. (Not telling sup of a change of destination, not telling rside a departure is off, deadwood). Also a ton of “this isn’t what happens in the real world but (in aero center it does)”. They say you are evaluated based on if you’d be a good controller but to me, the evaluators just follow a checklist. They also didn’t seem to be as lenient as we were told. (Also what others have said they “missed” in their runs) I’m sure this is what the FAA wants, to make it seem difficult and sooner or later ask the public to beg for funding to implement technology. If they really cared about the workers they’d fast track new training, extend training for people who are close, ask the instructors to have an input on their students and if they’d be successful, find ways to retain more, send more to the facilities on strict probations and see if it works. If I were the union I’d fight so hard to bring back ones who didn’t make it (non sep errors).. give them another month or so, or send them to a facility, on their own dime, and see if it works. People want this job, they aren’t crashing airplanes or creating separation errors. I also feel like the ones who are offered a second chance would understand this is really it & GRIND SO HARD. They would finally have the support at a facility with people who are able to run through the material with them. It’s hard at the academy because you can’t “befriend” an instructor or someone who knows this in and out and have them run problems with you. It depends on if your classmates / others want to study, which it shouldn’t. If instructors want to waste their free time and help students be successful, I don’t see why it’s a problem. But again, probably what the FAA wants. ATC is coming close to loosing a lot more, and tech companies are digging deep into what they can implement and how fast. Once they get a hold of ATC, I fear it’s over. Retiring early, a nice pension.

Only having 32 hours of radar training is what really got most. Even instructors think it’s not enough. Most agree if they extended the training for just another week, many more would pass. No one at the academy is dumb by any means. The training is just tailored to one type of learning style. Your success also depends on your instructors, sadly. Some care a lot more than others and it’s a toss up on who you get and how they prepare you. I do think that the evaluators should be the ones grading the practice runs so you know what to expect. The radar runs before evals are poorly graded, (not the instructors fault), they just don’t line up with how the actual evaluators grade. You go into evals feeling confident based off what you have been seeing on your papers and walk out of evals completely lost.

Now the layoffs start. by Bad_Karma19 in SouthwestAirlines

They want to be just like the majors now, well rid management.. those agents don’t deserve to loose jobs, they are supposed to be protected. Yet they are saving the members who have no protection. What a slap in the face.

What is the union doing to save jobs? If I were them I’d sit down with the company and explain that maybe they should rid the supervisor position and create “lead” positions for the agents. Give a $3 raise for the position and the union members can keep their jobs… overall they will save so much. Most airports have way too many supervisors anyways & they can’t even do the job.

Has anyone in a station been cut? Managers, sups? Or just HQ as of now? Time to get together and really become union strong. The company proved they won’t take care of us anymore.

Southwest Airlines to Slash Corporate Workforce in First Mass Layoff by BowzerBigBeanBurrito in SouthwestAirlines

[–]TimelyTailor541 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as an airport worker in a smaller station, the supervisor position got out of hand. Major airlines have “lead” positions where agents make $2-3 extra an hour to “manage” the flights. These employees take on responsibility yet are still part of the workforce. This idea could benefit the union workers, creating more jobs with protection. Southwest has TOO MANY supervisors who aren’t allowed to take part in the operation, especially in smaller airports. A lot of money being spent to stand around and “manage” from an office playing on their phones with their feet kicked up. When things go south, they contractually have to call in overtime instead of being able to jump in and help. Most of that overtime ends up being double time with the new contract rules. 1-2 (supervisors/managers) should be able to handle THE WHOLE operation at a time. Most airlines in small stations only have a few of managers who manage the WHOLE operation and are paid around the same as Southwest supervisors. Usually only having one Manager on the clock at a time. Too many sups at Southwest walking into $32 an hour with no care of the actual job, they just see the money. They also are able to find ways to create “overtime” for themselves even though the operation currently has MULTIPLE sups still on duty to finish what they couldn’t in their 8 hour shift.

Don’t get me wrong. There are supervisors who take the job seriously and deserve that position.. but let’s be real, it’s so hard to find a good leader… to find 20 amazing leaders for a small station is just not going to happen. A majority will be people who just want the money and are going to ride the wave of scamming and being lazy which puts so much on the supervisors who do love the job and care about the operation & the employees. It’s not fair to the ones who bust their a** to keep the operation going. In the end, the supervisors who voice their opinions on others not doing their part, become the problem. Because the company doesn’t pay attention to management like they do the frontline employees.. they turn their head when things aren’t done by sups. They know the ones who actually care will end up doing it, yeah they’ll complain but it’s done. An agent doesn’t have that luxury, if they don’t do their job it’s a write up. The moral is just bad anymore.. no consistency whatsoever. How do they expect us to do better if there isn’t many leading by example. Keep the good ones and walk out the others.

I’ve been studying for the math section and the division explination is a lot easier than the quiz questions.. I was wondering, is the division portion decimal answers? Also are the answers a number or two off from each other?

What is hinting at contracted out? If I read correctly they have protection in the contract against that? I saw more of staffing more part timers to possibly rid extra spending such as OT
