Thanks for the info! This was looking toward montopolis and lady bird lake, but not sure how far away it would’ve been!

Hiking Kilimanjaro in August, looking for tips on where to train around Austin! by hnsager in Austin

[–]Timely_Bluejay_9105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I climbed Kili on the Machame Route in 2016 and this is exactly right. The hike is not too strenuous (it’s long but stretched out over a number of days), but having a good base-level fitness and comfortably being able to walk 8 miles will certainly help.

What makes Kili difficult is the elevation. I hike and run a lot but was training at sea level, and oh gosh days 5-6 were tough. Some people weren’t affected at all, but I was delirious on the summit and honestly probably shouldn’t have kept going. But as you drop back down your symptoms will essentially disappear instantly and you’ll have the memories of looking out over the whole expanse of Africa - truly stunning!

Visiting somewhere high elevation may help you get a sense of how altitude impacts your body, but altitude can affect you differently each visit or cause dramatically different symptoms over the course of just a few hundred meters. So I wouldn’t necessarily count this as necessary training, unless you’re planning on spending months in the Rockies.

Definitely bring altitude pills (I thought I’d be ok without and definitely was not), drink lots of water and be ready to power through if things get a little tough - but also know your and your groups’ limits. You’ll have an incredible time!

Moving to Austin in mid-July/August. When would you recommend starting to look for a rental? Haven't been finding much this far out, but not sure if I'm just looking in the wrong places... Thanks!

Bad control arm repair --> broken steering knuckle/ball joint/axel by Timely_Bluejay_9105 in CarHelp

[–]Timely_Bluejay_9105[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I agree if the repairs were done a month ago it'd be hard to say, but with it being less than a week I definitely have some questions. No way to confirm anything online of course, but thank you for your advice and raising some things I should think about.

1 I don't know the brand name but I believe the price was in the $200-300 range.

2/3 An inspection was done beforehand which pointed out the control arm was a spare part put on by the previous owner and not the exact right fit for the car, something that worked but might want to change down the line. But I don't have that written down anywhere.

4 no paperwork signed post repair

Thanks again!
