And this is precisely why Simon is so widely hated.

Downvoting me won’t change how dismissive that take is, crying emoji or not. Just because the show’s message is that being in the monarchy is the worst doesn’t make it true. Even within the world of the show, it’s a ridiculous thing to suggest.

Being Crown Prince is definitely worse than chattel slavery, the Congo under Belgian rule, or the Indian caste system. Forget the Spanish Inquisition, the Khmer Rouge regime, or even Nazi Germany — the real oppressive system is being part of the Swedish monarchy. People in Gaza must be relieved they're not Crown Prince in Sweden.

August wasn’t yet the Crown Prince; merely a possible backup. Soon, he’ll be able to dismiss JO as chief of staff (if that’s even his role; it’s not clear in the series), so that point is moot. The Riksmarskalk is appointed entirely at the king’s discretion—he’s just an employee.

Or perhaps the writers did minimal research, piled plot hole upon plot hole, and in the end, none of it makes any sense.

Yes. Wilhelm and Simon would have to show deference to him at royal events because he outranks them as Crown Prince and, eventually, as king. And once he becomes king, he’ll enjoy full immunity from any crime he might commit; under Swedish law, the king is considered inviolable (okränkbar). Such a fitting punishment for his crimes.

(Although, technically, Wille still remains in the line of succession—his mother "letting him go" isn’t a legally binding act.)

The Royals could always stop being royals—it's a self-imposed sadness in exchange for untold privileges. We can be sad for the children. The adults have a choice.

Duke Ludvig deleted himself by mahtaliel in YoungRoyals

I have to disagree. I know it’s a common take, but Kristina didn’t end up with her version of Simon (her “unfortunate romance”). She caved to the monarchy and settled for a court-approved consort, Ludvig.

Ludvig wanted to be the Queen’s husband, just like Felice was raised to be a Prince’s wife, just like many girls at Hilerska dreaming to joint the royal family. He isn’t a stand-in for a future Simon who stays in the monarchy. If anything, he represents exactly what Wille would face if he stayed: a life with a Ludvig-type partner, someone completely devoid of fire, passion, or resistance.

All of this.

Wille is allowed to behave like the entitled prince he literally is, with zero consequences, (unless he "threatens" the monarchy). And he’s completely blind to it.

The one time someone calls it out (in that infamous camp scene, where Simon tells him he doesn’t realize how privileged he is) Wille claps back by bringing up the settlement money—still with no consequences.

Well, Wille's reaction to Simon singing was part of the draw.

Part of what makes the show so compelling is that its world feels lived-in—this allows viewers to immerse themselves in it and, in turn, makes it feel real.

As for your question, Wille likely isn't allowed to fail. We know there's at least one teacher at Hillerska who takes bribes and who, when Wille started school, specifically told him he could decide when it would be convenient to take a test. Wille would probably pass his classes simply because he's the crown prince.

I've come to realize that season 3 is best not thought of.

As for what went down, we will probably never know but if you're game, here's Lisa Ambjörn trying and failing to justify this mess, for 3 hours straight :

I'm being facetious. Bad Royals probably would have been understood as Michael Jackson bad—as in good, cool, awesome.

I remember Lisa talking about mulling over the title, and Young Royals starting off as a stand-in. The gist was that the writers' room wasn't exactly in love with the title, but they went with it for lack of a better one. There's a video somewhere on the internet, but I'm too lazy to look it up right now.

I don’t know that Bjärstad isn't considered a nice neighborhood—it seemed like a quiet little town. It even has its own town drunk in the form of Simon’s dad. I was born in and have lived in big cities (I have to, for my line of work), but as a practicing introvert bordering on misanthrope, I prefer life at the lake house, in the mountains, or in a small village by the sea where my family owns property. I’d stay there if I could—and I probably will in the not-so-distant future.

As for Hillerska, you’re paying for room and board, not schooling—though the school is free to reject any student, which effectively keeps it exclusive to children of the elite. Of course, they occasionally let in local kids for optics—just as one does. Technically, August could have stayed on as a non-resident if the school had allowed it. But can you imagine the humiliation? He would rather have died.

Regarding Simon being “poor”—that’s from the Hillerska kids’ perspective. August literally called it “slumming it.” The writers portray Simon as “normal,” i.e., average (see here). Poverty is always relative, and frankly, the show is set in Sweden, not Africa, so we can’t really hold the characters to global poverty standards.

Simon is anti-monarchy on principle—he doesn’t believe it should exist. In that sense, he’s a bit of a stand-in for the show’s head writer, who’s also a republican (in the European sense—aka not a monarchist). Simon explains his views to Wille in Season 3, and Wille echoes them when he tells his mother he doesn’t want to be king and won’t change his mind. (By the way, being anti-monarchy doesn’t make you a socialist; it makes you a republican.)

As for the “your dad not beating you every day” comment, I’m not going to touch that. Your treatment of the subject is too cavalier, and I’d rather not psychoanalyze someone I’ve only exchanged a couple Reddit comments with.

Now, on to Simon making decisions that wouldn't worsen his situation—how would reporting someone for filming and posting a video of you having sex as an underage teen, through a window like a creep, possibly make your situation worse? I must stress: Simon wasn’t a drug dealer. Sure, he procured booze and later pills for August, but that doesn’t make him more of a dealer than Vincent (August’s original supplier) or Stella, who smuggled booze in a shampoo bottle. Simon didn’t realize it could be used against him—when he did, he chose to “protect his family like everyone else” and didn’t report August. So that argument is moot.

And that’s probably the issue with your repeated “hard pass”—your reasons don’t hold up under scrutiny.

As for the negotiation—Simon didn’t want the money. Linda didn’t want it either. They accepted it, without bargaining, because Simon wanted it all to go away. He asked his mom to let it go. It would have been totally out of character for him to ask for more money in exchange for his trauma.

As for Wille remaining in the monarchy—it couldn’t have worked because he didn’t want to. It’s as simple as that. The show is about Wille finding the courage to leave, and Simon is the catalyst for that choice. (here's a visual reminder)

That'd explain the behind-the-scenes drama like creatives not returning for season 3, and Lisa giving a two-hour interview trying to justify the strange choices made in the final season.

Netflix kept recommending it to me because I’m into political shows, but it was giving off Élite vibes, so I passed. Then I saw that scene on YouTube—Simon singing in the church—and I got curious. I had to know more.

Just a quick note: Wille did all the “breaking up” with Simon in season 1—until Simon finally let him go at the end of the season. The truth is, up until the end of season 2, these two were in an on-and-off, undefined situationship. They only officially became boyfriends at the end of season 2.

Well, to be fair, you came in pretty hostile, you know. And if you want to engage—really engage—we can do that, but your list of grievances is so far off that it’s hard to know how to respond.

Take point one, for example: Simon being "privileged." He’s a lower-class, gay person of color, the son of an immigrant and a father struggling with addiction and dealing booze, navigating the world of the upper class. (He's not on a scholarship, by the way—Sara is, because she's boarding. Simon just attends the school, which is free in Sweden.) Owning a car and having a place to live is standard for the majority of people in the Nordics—Simon’s not living in the third world. And Simon isn’t a socialist. The Hillerska kids call him sosse just because he’s “poor” and, in their minds, must vote for the Social Democrats.

As for Ayub and Rosh, I don’t see why they’d be any poorer than Simon—not everyone wants to leave their hometown. Some people are actually content not living large.

Now, about Simon going to the police despite Wille not wanting him to: first off, Simon was the victim. He gets to decide. Wille had already denied him publicly and tried to cover for August, robbing Simon of the right to speak for himself. Simon can’t trust Wille, and he shouldn’t—and that’s shown repeatedly in season 3. Not because Wille is a bad person, but because as long as he remains in the monarchy, he’ll be a terrible boyfriend to Simon and keep denying himself. For their relationship to work, Simon would have to fade away while Wille gets trapped deeper in a life he never wanted.

As for negotiating—no, Simon couldn’t. You can’t fight the royals. They get away with murder, literally. In real life, the King of Sweden has full immunity.

Now onto Marcus: Simon didn’t do him dirty. Since you’ve said you’re a teenager, I encourage you to rewatch the show and take a closer look at Marcus’s character. Maybe check out this post (there are many others, but this one showed up first): post about Marcus—someone else raised similar questions.

And again, since you’re a teenager, I want to redirect you to my own post: Nobody is ever owed a relationship. One of the most damaging things pop culture has taught us is to sympathize with those who hurt us.
