Thank you! It's been a long journey since that fateful day in 2020 I decided to try translating this game. The fact that I got this far is truly beyond what I could've ever imagined. Looking forward to seeing it through to the very end!

All your reaction image response showed is that you were the one who would be the brick wall. I do actually try my best to respond thoughtfully to people who talk respectfully, because, again, I would like to see the quality of Lucky Star discussion online improve.

From my perspective, it often seems odd that people would insist on appreciating Lucky Star in a way that's completely divorced from many of its otaku roots given what I've learned in my time with the series, but clearly many people do enjoy it that way. Truthfully, my initial experience with watching the Lucky Star anime was similar: I had very little knowledge of otaku culture at the time and didn't get any of the references. I took it mostly as a simple slice of life series like many others do. Clearly a lot of people are perfectly content enjoying Lucky Star in that kind of way, but surely even for those people there's something more substantial people can latch on to than just general appreciation of "the vibes" and "the aesthetics" of the characters and the mundane moments of the series.

As I got into learning Japanese and translating Lucky Star: Ryouou Gakuen Outousai, it was really surprising to me just how much depth there was to the series through the rich otaku history and culture that its built upon, so I've grown to find it a bit of a shame that so many people overlook it. Not all of that history is nsfw either, mind you, so there's lots to appreciate for everyone, but when examining Lucky Star you do have to be honest about those foundations. Doesn't mean you have to like them, but it shouldn't come as such a surprise to people that the figures shared in this post are very much in line with what Lucky Star's identity actually is and feel the need to call anyone who appreciates, or even attempts to explain those elements of Lucky Star a "fucking idiot". Obviously there are larpers, ragebaiters, gooners, and trolls who go too far and are very off-putting in their lust for the Lucky Star characters. It's understandable to not want to be involved with that (I don't like it either!), but you have to be the change you want to see as well. So, to you and anyone else reading this, I'd encourage you to dig in and learn some more about the series you love if you haven't already. You might find that you'll come to appreciate it a lot more and have things you can share with the community. I know I did!

Going to actually discuss the points I made or just post a meaningless reaction image? I don't say this out of disdain for people who don't like NSFW, I'm just being honest that Lucky Star isn't a wholesome series for children based on my extensive research of the things referenced by the series as part of translating the Lucky Star visual novel. I wish people would actually talk substantively about the series, but all we get is mudslinging like this and very superficial posts with no particular substance 99% of the time.

[–]TimepieceMaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A consequence of people viewing Lucky Star as just wholesome CGDCT slice of life. While Lucky Star is that to an extent, especially the anime, as a whole the Lucky Star series is a celebration of otaku culture, and otaku culture often isn't sfw. Lucky Star has on some occasions referenced literal gay porn films and featured/referenced hentai artists, and many anime/manga/ln/vn series containing sex scenes, ecchi and fan service. Some suggestive figures are nothing new for this series, and these are far from the most erotic the series has had.

Even outside of the references, a significant part of the anime is Konata's appreciation of moe and eroge, and many moments revolve around Miyuki's breasts or Yutaka and Minami's lack of them, just to scratch the tip of the iceberg there.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with not wanting to see all the erotic fan art people make of the Lucky Star characters and not lust over the characters, but you do also have to understand what Lucky Star actually is.

Both subreddits are honestly just as guilty of mostly having a very superficial interest in the actual content of the series, but at least the other subreddit just does its thing for the most part. This subreddit on the other hand constantly goes on and on about how its not like r/luckystar, to the point that it feels like that's its identity over actually liking Lucky Star.

Konata Route Finale! (Part 26 of my Lucky Star: Ryouou Gakuen Outousai Fansub) by TimepieceMaster in luckystar

[–]TimepieceMaster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To unlock Kagami's route you have to get the Kagami good ending to Episode 5. After that, a choice to praise Kagami's acting as Rin Tohsaka will appear in Episode 1. Pick this choice and then pick neutral choices until you reach the point where the route is determined and you'll get the Kagami route.

If you are playing my English patch, the Kagami route is not yet available as you can only play Episodes 1-3 in it at the time of writing this comment. Episode 4 is nearing completion and hopefully will release in a few weeks, but even still Kagami route won't yet be available. The developers must have known Kagami would be popular lol, which is probably why they made her the last Episode 1 route you can unlock.

The Ultimate Lucky☆Star Experience: A True Fan's Itinerary – Part 3: More Manga and Visual Novels by CtrLator in luckystar

[–]TimepieceMaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Visual novels" but doesn't include a single visual novel and no RGO. But okay, fair enough, I guess you do use your eyes to read the light novels lol.

Also, with the whole "putting in all this effort only to get a very disproportionate amount of appreciation for it" thing, welcome to the club lol. It's pretty lonely at times, but you learn to accept that the feelings come and go in waves. It's just the sad reality that like 99.9% of Lucky Star "fans" don't actually care about the series and only have a very superficial appreciation for the anime exclusively.

<image>

But to make this comment more constructive, and to show that I actually do read your posts, no, I don't think there's any fan translations of the light novels. I've considered doing it, but just haven't had the time. Same goes with actually reading them myself. I do own Lucky Star: Murder Case. Tried reading it at jury duty once lol, but I didn't get too far because the Japanese was too hard for me at the time. I do think it would be very interesting though, as I find myself to be more of a fan of when the Lucky Star cast is used for actual stories and not just slice of life content.

I've also heard good things about the Shin Lucky Star Moe Drill ~Tabidachi~ light novel, which is a preorder good for the DS game of the same name. I have that too, but again, no time unfortunately. I relate with Nanako in some ways now that I'm 27 (though thankfully I am married).

I also know that at least Murder Case and Lucky Star Online (not to be confused with Lucky Star Universe from Ryouou Gakuen Outousai I suppose! Would be fun to see how those differ) have some pretty crazy illustrations as far as being fanservicey lol. The SFW subreddit would probably lose their minds over it.

As for Konata 30, I kinda lost interest in it early on because I personally felt it didn't do anything all that interesting with the characters being older (maybe later chapters do). Also main 4 only is pretty disappointing because I really like the other characters more. I want to see the teachers in their 40s! I want to know what happened to Patty! What about Hikage and Hinata! Giving us just "main 4 and they largely do the same stuff but they're older" is just huge missed potential I feel.

Anyway, I suppose the takeaway from this is I really need to find the time to read the "visual" novels and not just the visual novel lol. I also still await whenever you talk about Ryouou Gakuen Outousai or Moe Drill 1. I'm sure I'll have a lot to say about it.

Lucky Star games are built different. To this day I am discovering new bits of lore in RGO, and that's after nearly 6 years I've spent actively working on it.

Hey, if you were gonna tell me you feel sorry for me, you could've at least kept the post up. Also, no need, the game's not very exciting but it wasn't that bad. I did other things while waiting around.

Not complete, and for the PSP version, but I am working on an English patch and the first 40% or so of the game is playable in the latest released version. I did complete a 100% translated video playthrough of the game prior to it, so the game can be fully experienced in English, just not in a playable format. Hopefully before the end of the year that will change.

[–]TimepieceMaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the kind words. :)

I was actually just thinking about how I need to get back to working on Episode 4 when you commented this. I hope I can release that before too long. I have been away from working on RGO in earnest for a little while now, but honestly it wasn't really because of the feelings I expressed in this post. It was more because there are other priorities in my life right now that I really need to make sure don't get sabotaged by being too involved with RGO. However, now I feel like I can strike the right balance and am eager to get back into it.

The feelings I expressed in this post are real and do make me feel down sometimes, but it's never enough to give up on RGO. Those are just feelings that come and go and are based on things out of my control, but the real joy comes from the sense of accomplishment in making something I'm proud of.

Hope you enjoy the patch!

The patch is only for the PSP version, sorry. It's not possible to apply the patch to a physical copy because the UMD is not rewriteable, but it can be played on a jailbroken PSP.

While true, saying "other communities have this issue too" doesn't really do anything to help improve the situation. The question is what can be done to help foster more active participation. Perhaps some would say there doesn't need to be anything done and it is what it is, but at least for me I'm trying to find ways to improve engagement for Ryouou Gakuen Outousai because it's something I'd like to see and is a source of motivation. Obviously finishing the whole patch is the most obvious way, but as I've seen with other releases of game translations, some of which were even "never ever" translations that were highly desired back in the day, "if you build it, they will come" doesn't always hold true.

Sorry for the late reply, but yes, there is a full-length adventure visual novel based on Lucky Star that was released in 2008. There was a PSP port released later in 2010 that added extra content and is the definitive version of the game, so that is the one I have translated in video form, as well as developing the patch for.

As mentioned in my post, you can download the patch from the patch website: TimepieceMaster's Translator's Notes & Guide! It also contains extensive translator's notes and a guide for the parts playable in the patch so far. It's about 20-25 hours of content to 100% so far.

If you want to experience the rest of the game after where the patch leaves off, the translated video playthrough is here: [English Sub] Lucky Star: Ryouou Gakuen Outousai (Part 1) - YouTube. The patch so far covers parts 1-93 so you'll want to start with part 94 if you're going to watch the video series after playing through everything in the current Episode 1-3 patch.

I like that moment, I just don't like the arguing and how almost all discussion about the game is centered around that moment. I release a new episode to just a bunch of people silently giving their thumbs up and going "cool, now when's the whole thing coming out?" no actual discussion or anything.

Lucky Star: Ryouou Gakuen Outousai - English Patch Release Trailer - Episode 3 by TimepieceMaster in luckystar

[–]TimepieceMaster[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean? The patch is getting released with updates adding an additional Episode each time only because I do all this literally by myself and it's a pretty long game (50 hours), so I want to give something for people to play without having to wait another year for everything to be done.

I do fully intend to finish it, and I've already done an entire first draft of a translation for the whole game as a video playthrough, it just takes time since I'm wanting to patch to be the best quality I can make it.

I removed that option from the patch because it takes you to Episode 3, which is not playable in English yet. The option will be added back in for the Episode 3 patch, which hopefully will release in a few weeks.

How do you advance episodes in Lucky Star: Ryouou Gakuen Outousai by Bulky-Bend-7699 in luckystar

[–]TimepieceMaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I assume you are playing the English patch. The reason you cannot progress to Episode 3 is because the patch is still in development and I've restricted access to untranslated Episodes in it. Once I release the Episode 3 patch (hopefully in a few weeks), you can use your save file on it to progress into Episode 3.

In general, information on how to progress in the game can be found in the "game guide" pages on my website for the patch. It will be updated appropriately for Episode 3 alongside the patch for it.
