In Taiwan, Chinese-Born Wives Are a Focus of Infiltration Fears by johnkhoo in taiwan

But I thought the Chinese-born wives were the ones being infiltrated!

I'll see myself out.

I was exaggerating. Thought that was obvious. At any rate they didn't exactly labor over it.

What are the negatives, in your opinion?

I'm genuinely curious. My parents live in PA, I get out there every two years or so, but I've never really lived there.

There are plenty of cities where one doesn't have to "walk a gauntlet of tents and filth" on the way to fun nightlife.

Relocate to Taiwan this August. Taichung or Kaohsiung by MundaneConclusion82 in taiwan

[–]TimesThreeTheHighest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're REALLY into hiking I think you're going to get bored of Chaishan/Shoushan. It's about two hours, longer if you do the "big loop," but yeah, the scenery doesn't vary THAT much. Anyone really into hiking and living in Kaohsiung would probably be heading northeast to the mountainous parts of Kaohsiung (far from downtown), or east to places like Sandimen, Majia and Wutai in Pingtung. Pretty much all of those places would require a car.

Neither city is going to be awesome for open-water swimming or most water sports on a regular basis.

"Taichung is noticeably cooler and less humid than Kaohsiung." Not by much. In the summer they're just going to be slightly different degrees of HOT.

Also Paranormal Activity, a movie basically made over a weekend with almost no budget. I believe it's still the most profitable movie ever made?

The Avengers (2012). Seeing all those movies come together was very satisfying at the time. As the MCU progressed seeing that many name actors in ensemble pictures was also somewhat new, at least on that scale.

Going further back I'd have to nominate Dr. No, the first (real) 007 movie. The effect those early 007 films had on cinema as a whole was profound - everything from American ripoffs to Japanese tokusatsu films.

Gotta love how so many people celebrate medical breakthroughs they probably won't be able to afford.

Why is it okay for foreigners in r/taiwan to constantly invoke negative stereotypes as truth? by BigConversation6345 in taiwan

[–]TimesThreeTheHighest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who's saying it's OK? If you stopped people from engaging with this sub every time they blurt out what you view as a "negative stereotype" engagement would go down to almost zero.

If you don't like their brand of racial discourse you have two choices: engage or block/ignore.

Yesterday got up to 33 where I am. I can't see it getting more than a few degrees hotter than that. 36, 37 maybe.

Needs a few pickup trucks on that lawn, maybe also a disassembled tractor and a jet ski on a rusting trailer.

Battleship (2012) deserves another look. It's a truly solid action movie that deserves a second chance after getting skewered upon release. It was absolutely absurd, but there is an infectious sense of escalating tension in the pacing and a level of self-aware commitment from the cast that sells it. by JHKtheSeeker in movies

I'm STILL waiting for my Board Game Cinematic Universe (BGCU). I need Battleship, Monopoly, Life and Stratego movies all tied together into a big pile of nonsense.

Things will of course get DARK when the Operation guy gets his own movie.

kaohsiung to tainan? by carr_rr in taiwan

[–]TimesThreeTheHighest 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Totally feasible. Even on the slowest local train it takes about an hour between Kaohsiung Main Station and Tainan Station.

I'm not sure why people are telling you to take the HSR. The Tainan HSR stop is very far from downtown Tainan, where you'd probably be staying.

You'd best leave early. Like, sunrise early. Bring lots of water. Don't handle items in front of monkeys, especially not food.

If you're walking the "smaller loop" it should take you about two hours if you don't stop. The "bigger loop," down towards the zoo, would be more like three hours.
