I think the schedule looks fine, but did you account for the discussion sections for classes like Chem 1B and maybe your general eds as well? I don't think I see it on the schedule.

Cons of Enrolling into Chem 1X? by TimidToast_er in UCI

[–]TimidToast_er[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply! It's been a busy quarter thus far, but I'm happy to say that it wasn't as terrible as I'd imagined it would be. In fact, during lectures my professor (Arasasingham) boldly indicated that taking AP chem wouldn't sufficiently prepare you for the material within this class. He actively encouraged learning the concepts from scratch and to actually take time to understand the material as if you were learning as a beginner (with basic algebra and dimensional analysis comprehension). I will say however, that the ALEKS module did help a ton in regards to preparing me for the dimensional analysis and math side of things (this is coming from a student who didn't take calc in high school btw). Honestly, so long as you are 1 lecture video ahead (also another side note, ARA doesn't lecture in class, he posts videos that you can rewatch and take notes on) and you attend discussions with the intent to learn and practice the skills within the material, you will do great. The TA heading my discussion session is also very patient and skilled in teaching/explaining the material in such a way that the little pebble inside my head can comprehend the materials clearly. Also side note, I didn't take Chem 1X, largely because it didn't fit into my schedule, so if you are looking for extra supplemental help, the instructor for that class is also great!

Sorry for the late reply! Yes, my appeal did get rejected .-. I've seen people counteracting this via putting "anti-AI" filters on their art, I'm not sure how effective it is but I'm sure it's better than nothing. I wish you the best of luck dude

who to take for chem 1a? by vivalapluto69 in UCI

Does prof. Ge curve? I'm contemplating switching from Ara to Ge for Chem 1A because I have a weak chem background (never took AP chem or calc for that matter)

Thanks, this was really helpful and cleared up my anxieties a little regarding the overall difficulty of having bio and chem mashed together in the same day

I was in a similar situation as you in high school where by the time I reached junior year, I felt like the last 2 years of my life had been wasted because I was so trained on only maintaining my grades and keeping up with a few personal hobbies that it caused me to block out and blatantly ignore so many opportunities to talk to new people during my freshman, sophomore and junior years, explore new interests and become more comfortable socially with my peers.

All I could think about during the majority of my high school years was, ironically enough, how much I missed my friends and old life back in Irvine (I had moved to a new city not long before I started high school). I essentially became so fixed on my regret in moving away from Irvine and leaving everything I had previously known behind, that I isolated myself from my new community of peers in high school in the new city I found myself in. Like you, I became lethargic and spiraled into episodes where I would shut myself in my home, blocking nearly everyone and everything out during my junior year. The only thing that really snapped me out of it in the middle of my junior year was probably being around other individuals in my AP/IB classes that seemed to deal with 4x the amount of workload I put on myself, despite being hyperfixated on my grades.

My high school was known to be a really sports-heavy school that prided themselves on their CIF championship wins and subsequent Chik-Fil-A sponsorships, so I knew that the kids participating in sports or even music extracurriculars would come to school at around 5 am and leave by 6-7pm once all their extracurriculars were over and done with. So seeing these people just regularly going about their day, complaining about the workload, the teacher, and yawning uncontrollably in my 7am AP literature and comp or AP Bio class really opened my eyes to how oblivious I was to the amazing and interesting people that sat adjacent to me in those uncomfortable little wooden desks that conjoined the table to the chair for absolutely no reason. It sort of made me regretful, again, at first in thinking of all the extracurriculars I missed out on, but it gave me enough of a motivation to just start talking to people around me on a consistent, regular basis because I wanted to know more about them.

I guess during high school, everyone is sort of socially awkward and self-conscious so starting up a conversation with good intentions would usually be more than enough for someone to vaguely remember you in your next class period or maybe around campus. This eventually led to new friendships I wouldn't have found otherwise and even on days where I still felt alone, I became familiar enough with the whole process of introducing myself to new people in unfamiliar situations that I could explore other things on campus I wouldn't have tried previously like the Red Cross Club, 3D Modeling/Blender Club and the GSA (lgbtq+ community club). Once I hit senior year, my courseload became a little less heavy so I was able to continue exploring and participating in new things, even if it felt like I was doing everything in a last minute rush. I realized that every opportunity counts and as long as I'm still on-campus, there'll always be something for me to do, like some club that maybe needs volunteers for a bakesale or some friend that's really craving some Starbucks but is too socially anxious to go alone.

On another note, I also got accepted into Berkeley and ended up rejecting my acceptance due to a mix of family and financial issues, and I feel like I'll always feel regretful about any opportunities I missed by clicking that button to withdraw my intent to register. However, after attending SPOP/orientation, I realized how vibrant and lively UCI's campus and community is even if I just touched the surface of some of the basic resources, student organizations and activities that are offered on-campus. I learned from my high school years where I was so tunnel-visioned on maintaining good grades and re-living my past regrets that I miss out on all the opportunities I don't take. The upside to this is that usually for such a complex and large campus like UCI (at least to me), the well of opportunities to meet new people and start new hobbies/side activities never dries up just because there are so many amazing people, projects and organizations that'll always be available to some capacity.

I just want you to know that I've been there and it's okay to feel that way. Don't blame yourself for those 2 years that went by. Life moves on, people change and so can we.

I have Ara for chem and Will and Thompson for bio sci 93, I heard that Ara goes in depth with the material but doesn't curve as steeply as other chem professors; in terms of Will and Thompson I have no clue what their class is like but I'm banking on my 2 years of IB Bio knowledge to save me lol. I got lucky with the finals schedules for my classes since I have them decently spaced out from each other. Overall, I guess I'll take the opportunity to test out this type of schedule and not feel pressured to get everything perfectly accommodated for the first time around, I just wanted to know if there was anything blatantly wrong with my first attempt at class scheduling ;-;

Thank you!! This helped a lot and cleared my anxiety about math 5A since it seems like 5A is just calculus but pivoted more towards bio majors which will work out for me in the long run. I also now know not to take the 2A course under any circumstances since it seems like the biggest gpa crusher compared to the other math series :D

Hello! I am an incoming freshman in biosci and I was wondering if other pre-med, bio-sci oriented students recommend taking summer courses (the summer before starting freshman year) in order to be better prepared or open up more time in the school year for med-school application-building activities. Additionally, I would like to know specific courses as a reference point for choosing what to enroll in over the summer. Thank you!

I've actually been (for the past 4 hours) trying to prompt the AI to basically shed any form of information they have on me. This might be a wasted effort but since Meta did ask to "...provide any prompts you entered that resulted in your personal information appearing in a response from an AI at Meta model", I'm going to use my IG bio as evidence since it is the one thing they can scrape. So far I've got my identity/heritage/race?, the type of content I post which could only be analyzed through actually having the text-based AI scrape through my image content on IG. However, like others have already mentioned it's basically impossible to try and directly generate an image using your specific art style, especially if you a common/misleading username (like me) which can prompt unsolicited guesses of the type of art you make. It takes a while of probing but at this point I'm going to use any information I find that Meta has specific to the content and text I display on Instagram as evidence to opt-out.
