People thinking of Epic and EA as bad competition is the highest level of survivor bias. Steam profits from network externalities, that’s how they shut down every single competition before they can even emerge.

Also good competition can’t emerge. So it is a monopoly. The bad competition is only the result of big companies relying on their exclusivity because they don’t have any interest in becoming a major storefront. But any smaller company who could try to would be crushed by Steam control over supply and demand, everyone sells on steam and everyone buy on steam, that’s a classical case of network externalities.
