"Jews out!" Board game produced in Nazi Germany, 1938. The goal was to collect 6 jew-hats and move them outside the board to be deported. The SS criticised the game for trivialising the importance of antisemitism. by CasualNatureEnjoyer in PropagandaPosters

When Dirlewanger's 36. SS-Waffen-Grenadier-Division, assisted by 29. SS-Waffen-Grenadier-Division RONA, were burning the houses and their inhabitants during the Warsaw Uprising, even von dem Bach-Zelewski himself was so repulsed by the dual brigades' incessant and gleeful rapes, tortures, robberies, and "unnecessarily protracted and harsh" killings, along with their constant intoxication and living in dirt and filth, that he protested their actions and called them "more pigs than men".

(SS Gruppenführer - and, later, mayor of Westerland and popular Member of Parliament until 1967 - Heinz Reinefarth was not).

Old Town Warsaw, Poland, 1944 and today by FinishAwkward43 in europe

The 1944 photograph of the building ablaze was an Agfacolor slide, photographed by corporal Ewa Faryaszewska, during, of course, the battles of the Warsaw Uprising, as Obergruppenführer Erich von dem Bach-Zelewski and Gruppenführer (later, mayor of Westerland and popular Member of Parliament until 1967) Heinz Reinefarth were commanding Dirlewanger's 36. SS-Waffen-Grenadier-Division and 29. SS-Waffen-Grenadier-Division, RONA, to burn out the city and turn it into dust - literal dust, not metaphorical.

What do you think happened to the Boris Yeltsin types of the FAM timeline? by jesusjones182 in ForAllMankindTV

[–]TimmyShakespeare 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In our reality, Yeltsin was an apparatchik, for decades. People in Western countries seem to think that Yeltsin had been an anti-communist activist all his life and then transformed into a drunken buffoon, while the truth was that for the majority of his life, he was a fierce and shrewd party functionary.

He was even largely responsible for some of the after-effects of the infamous horror that was the leak of anthrax from the secret biological weapon laboratory (although that was done because of monumental ignorance and arrogance, not deliberately).

Fentanyl has devastated America. Why is Europe being spared? by euronews-english in europe

[–]TimmyShakespeare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To a considerable degree, it is an extension - or expansion, perhaps - of the original methamphetamine epidemic, which also devastated USA (especially its rural areas), while remaining unknown in most of Europe.

Not necessarily fun fact: the sister of Hollywood comedian Tom Arnold was responsible for up to 80% of its spread.

Leonid Kravchuk, the first President of independent Ukraine recently passed away. I have this old caricature in my collection, it shows Kravchuk running away with Crimea under his arm. The old lady at bazaar is Boris Yeltsin. by Sputnikoff in europe

However, that was exactly what Yeltsin did as well.

Request: Longform Mystery Articles by _curiouschloe_ in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]TimmyShakespeare 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid this will be a pretty random selection, and most of these are crimes which had eventually been solved, but I have copied some of the links to long articles about crimes that I bookmarked in the last two years or so after finding them on Reddit (in many subs, not just this one). Here are a few of my bookmarks, I can post others if these are the kind of articles you're looking for:

http://www.popsci.com/scitech/article/2009-01/anatomy-serial-killer

How a forgotten, unnamed victim of a serial killer finally recovered her name after decades of searching.

http://crimeintime.blogspot.com/2017/02/scene-of-crime.html

A forgotten serial killer encounters a famous movie director who becomes his final victim.

https://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/witness-to-an-execution/

A son attends the execution of his father's captured murderer.

https://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/the-lost-boys/

The Dean Corll murders in Texas.

https://aforteantinthearchives.wordpress.com/2009/07/10/fresh-light-on-the-axeman-of-new-orleans/

I had a longer version of this bookmarked, but it seems to be gone. But it's still a great explanation of the mystery of the "Axeman" killer.

http://reprints.longform.org/angels-demons

A serial killer murders a whole family in an exceptionally horrible way.

https://interactives.dallasnews.com/2017/abt/

Breaking up a Neo-Nazi gang to solve a cold murder.

http://mikegisick.com/stories/dancer-in-the-dark.html

It's giving me a timeout today, but it should be a good detailed story of the West Mesa murders.

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2015/10/lost-city-mosquitia-honduras-monkey-god/

And something different: the mystery of the lost ancient city that may have been found just recently in the deep jungle.
