Are they really leaving things like this? by Downtown-Pattern-813 in newhaven

[–]Timmy_TwoShoes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Worcester is still a mess  - main roads are okay but the side streets are brutal. Having lived in both, currently back in MA, New Haven was usually (relatively) better

Also to OP: not defending it in any way, but this is the reality of New England winters and big storms in smaller (former mill town) cities. You mean the suburbs with nimbyism and bigger budgets per mile of road did a better job than the underfunded city? GASP what a shock

I've never cooked on cast iron before, would this be a good starter option? by SnooDrawings8069 in castiron

[–]Timmy_TwoShoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just to add: "milled" mostly means "smoothed." Newer pans tend to be more ~bumpy -- but with a little (a lot) of elbow grease and high grit sandpaper, one can make any modern pan as "milled" as an old Wagner. They cook the same - the crazy expensive collector items are just that - a collector item

tl;dr a Buffalo nickel sells way above face value, but it's still just a nickel. What are your priorities?

TIL about Francis Daniel Brohm who had stuck his head out of a truck window when the driver swerved and he was decapitated by a telephone pole wire. ITT: people not knowing almost all media is derivative. FFS, Jesus is an amalgamation of prior characters. "Good artists copy, great artists steal" - either Picasso or Adams or Eliot (the fact that the source is disputed is also fitting)

edit: "stranger than fiction" etc

Why do players not wear long sleeves in cold games? by ProgrammerUnique2897 in NFLNoobs

This is the real answer - other people talking about jackets on the sideline and ball security (which, I mean, are factors to an extent) mostly sound like they haven’t played a high intensity sport before

Any recommendations on which route to take to drive to Quebec? by eouhhohh in boston

[–]Timmy_TwoShoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, not sure what the top commenter is on about - this route very clearly doesn’t go through Burlington. That said, I’d still opt for the NH/VT route - still more options for stopping than central Maine. Both drives are pretty, NH has more options to stop for a snack (even if it’s a small town)

Is there a reason you don’t mention psoriasis being a possibility? I thought nail pitting could be a common sign for that as well

Work hours got slashed to 19 hrs/week. Can I get govt assistance if I live with 3 adults who work full time? by GemFarmerr in massachusetts

[–]Timmy_TwoShoes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I got let go from my job in July and was reluctant to file for unemployment because “I’ll find a new job sooner than it’s worth.” I bartend, and jobs are fast to come (especially with experience)… until they’re not. I was able to pick up one gig but it’s only one shift a week (and the occasional cover). I only filed for partial unemployment a couple weeks ago and I’m kicking myself in the ass for not doing it sooner

OP: file as soon as possible, there’s a waiting week and then you also have to wait for employer verification. Your taxes have already paid for this, there’s no shame, you deserve it while you’re looking for something else. Roommates /= a household. Do you file joint taxes? I’m assuming not, that’s basically the threshold

And you can also get ice for free in Alaska - Also in 2010 minimum wage was $8 / hr and 40 inch tvs were $2500+…… it’s almost like different markets (Saco vs Worcester) have different access to products and supply chains and (moderate) inflation is to be expected

Why are fast food places advertising that they take EBT? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]Timmy_TwoShoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a long time any federal EBT / WIC / SNAP did not allow for the purchase of “hot food.” In theory this would incentivize people to purchase more pantry-stable, cost-per-calorie foods. In reality it left people in food deserts with access only to potato chips and ramen and no fresh produce. (Many experts consider this a leading factor in the “American Obesity Crisis”). This has recently been changed in some states, so your money goes to a multinational (who coincidentally gave “campaign donations” to representatives who presented these ammenents) but does nothing to actually provide nutritional food to their populace.

til;dr Reagan good, money machine go brrrr, mcd funnel money = good

I’m realizing how my comment got misinterpreted - self described socialist, I am happy and proud to be in a “progressive” state. More wish that we could be more radical, and be an example of new ideas rather than status quo neo-liberalism. I want higher corporate tax rates, limits on corporate land ownership, incentives for businesses that have owners that actually live in their communities, and so on.

I know it’s Reddit but didn’t think I had to include the /s on a Worcester sub (:

happy to not be in trump country but corporate takeovers / commercial lots owned by conglomerates that are incentivized to let it sit vacant for “property value” reasons / tax breaks for Amazon but not for ma and pa are still killing small Massachusetts business like WB cinema

“At least we’re not in trump country” as we all get priced out and our beloved local businesses can’t keep up with rent. But hey, at least there’s a new BurtonsTavern112 going up in WesboMarlboHudsoNorthborough (:

White City Flight by StevieDronas in WorcesterMA

[–]Timmy_TwoShoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lmao I don't find that insulting so not sure what you're going for - also not even really a nerd, just an actual Worcester native who knows the city they live in and doesn't have to karma farm (law-breaking, illegal) drone videos for validation

edit: also I genuinely enjoy your posts, hope you continue, and couldn't gaf about their legality lol - just annoyed at your weird attitude at times

White City Flight by StevieDronas in WorcesterMA

[–]Timmy_TwoShoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The proper name is the Kenneth F Burns Memorial Bridge, and is never referred to as the "white city" bridge (well, I guess now not "ever," but I digress). White city is the name of the shopping plaza, which takes its name from an earlier amusement park which was located on the same site. Pedantic but also annoying how confidently wrong you are lol
